How Coping with a Disaster Can Affect Your Mental Health

It used to be the case that if someone experienced a disaster or other extremely stressful situation, they were given a certain amount of time to grieve and then were simply expected to get over it. Now we realize that some people are just incapable of getting over stressful situations without professional help. The term post traumatic stress disorder has become a fairly well-known term. But just because people have heard and use this term, that doesnt mean they really know what it means.

Everyone experiences sadness, anger, and fear after a disaster or other traumatic event, but those symptoms generally subside with time. However, for those with post traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, those feelings dont go away and often get worse with time. If left untreated, those with PTSD will find it difficult to move on with their daily lives.

Post traumatic stress disorder was first noticed in war veterans who had been in battle; however, there are a variety of triggers that can set off PTSD including any traumatic event where someone was physically harmed or felt that they were in danger of being physically harmed. PTSD can also be set off by witnessing a traumatic event. It can also start if a close friend or family member experiences a traumatic event, even the person wasnt there when it happened. Ongoing traumatic experiences like physical or sexual abuse can trigger this disorder as well.

How Coping with a Disaster Can Affect Your Mental Health

Just because someone has experienced a disaster in their life doesnt mean they will develop post traumatic stress disorder. Other factors, including a genetic predisposition, combine to cause this problem. Another factor is how in control the person felt during the situation. During a disaster, people can attempt to cope, but they often feel completely incapable of controlling the outcome. This is why disaster, natural or otherwise, is a strong trigger for PTSD. The likelihood of developing a problem would also increase if a family member was in the disaster with you.

It is a normal healthy response to feel anxiety when we are in stressful situations. This is our bodys natural way of making us more prepared to react and deal with things. When we are anxious, we can react quicker and make faster decisions that may actually save our lives. The problem with anxiety is when it continues after the danger has passed. This can have serious mental and physical repercussions.

Once properly diagnosed, PTSD can be treated, often with therapy. While its good to get treatment for PTSD, it would be even better to treat it before it starts. If you or your loved one has recently been in a disaster or other traumatic event, consider seeing a therapist. They can help you work through the stress of the event and prevent your symptoms from worsening. With help PTSD is treatable and patients can go back to their daily lives.
