The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) report that about 5 million people worldwide die from tobacco use. Smoking is a major preventable cause of premature death and disease. Currently about one in five people smoke In the U.S. and Britain. Now research reports that smoking rates are declining in developed countries and may drop to zero by 2050.
The Citigroup analysis of the tobacco industry was based on smoking rates in Britain. The study reports that more than half of people in Britain smoked in the the 1960s. Today’s smoking rate of 20 percent indicates a sharp decline.
