Natural Remedies for PMS

Many women choose to use natural remedies for PMS symptoms rather than pharmaceutical drugs. Some of the choices she may have regarding natural remedies include vitamin and herbal supplements, calcium pills and other treatments.

If your doctor suggests calcium the best relief of your PMS symptoms is if you take in your calcium through food sources. The best food sources for calcium are spinach, turnip greens, mustard greens, collard greens, blackstrap molasses, Swiss chard, yogurt, kale, mozzarella cheese, milk either cow’s or goat’s, basil, thyme, dill seed, cinnamon, peppermint leaves, romaine lettuce, rhubarb, broccoli, sesame seeds, fennel, cabbage, summer squash, green beans, garlic, tofu, Brussel sprouts, oranges, asparagus and crimini mushrooms.

Another natural remedy for PMS is chaste tree berry. This is a popular herb in Europe for PMS. It can relieve the symptoms of irritability, headaches, breast tenderness and depression. If a woman is nursing or thinks she may be pregnant she should not take chaste tree berry. It may interact with hormonal drugs or other drugs that are taken for pituitary gland issues so please ask your doctor before taking this herb.

Magnesium is another natural remedy that many women use to improve the PMS mood changes symptom. Magnesium is found naturally in food and you can also get it in supplement form.

Evening primrose oil contains gamma-linolenic acid, which is an omega-6 essential fatty acid and is also involved in the metabolism of hormone-like substances in the body called prostaglandins that regulate both pain and inflammation in the body. Unfortunately even though many women use it for PMS symptoms so far there are no studies to back up the effectiveness of evening primrose oil.

Nutritionist recommend that women who suffer from PMS limit consumption of salt and sugar which will relieve symptoms of bloating, swelling of hands and feet, dizziness and breast tenderness. Eat more foods that are rich in potassium such as beans, broccoli, and fish. In order to stabilize blood sugar eat small, more frequent meals throughout the day. It is also beneficial to avoid caffeine in order to relieve symptoms of anxiety, depression, and breast tenderness. It is important to eat beans, fish, fruits, nuts, seeds and vegetables and to avoid drinking alcohol. Avoid or at least decrease consumption of fatty foods and red meat.

Women have also found regular exercise to be helpful such as walking, cycling, jogging, or swimming to help relieve PMS symptoms. A study found that it is not the intensity of the workout that relieves the PMS symptoms but the frequency that is responsible for a decrease in PMS symptoms.

Other natural remedies that women have found to be effective against PMS symptoms include acupuncture, chiropractic care, and taking vitamin E, Ginkgo, Royal jelly, St. Johns wort, wild yam, dandelion, and progesterone cream.
