Lets Talk About Bad Breath

Halitosis is another word for bad breath. Bad odor can come from our mouth when we eat certain foods or when bacterial growth has increased in our mouth causing bad breath or when we have poor dental hygiene. Bacteria plus a warm, moist mouth are idea-growing conditions for halitosis. Morning breath and dry mouth are two other types of bad breath.  Dry mouth causes dead cells to adhere to the tongue and sides of the cheeks causing bacteria to collect on the tongue and cheeks. It is the bacteria that cause the foul smell known as bad breath.

There are other causes of bad breath including poor dental hygiene, infections of the mouth such as periodontal disease, respiratory infections such as sinus infections, lung infections, and throat infections. Foods such as those made with garlic, onions and spicy foods can also cause bad breath. Drinking coffee or smoking cigarettes and chewing tobacco are all habits that can contribute to bad breath.

Systemic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, kidney and liver disease, lung diseases, sinus disease, and reflux diseases are just a few of the systemic diseases that can cause bad breath.

Psychiatric illnesses may have some people believing that they have bad breath, but oral healthcare professionals or other individuals do not notice it. This psychiatric illness where bad breath is reported is called, “pseudohalitosis”.

There are many symptoms that people with true bad breath have including a constant flow of bad odors that come from the mouth. Others may notice you have bad breath before you do. There may be other symptoms of bad breath including teeth that are coated with film or plaque, food debris stuck in between teeth, pale or swollen gums and obvious infections of the mouth such as gingivitis (bleeding gums, swollen gums) and pus between teeth and also painful, open sores on the tongue or gums.

Respiratory infections can initiate bad breath. When sore throats, swollen lymph nodes, fever, stuffy nose, and colorful nasal discharges as well as mucus-producing cough can all mean bad breath.

Those who smoke cigarettes, cigars or chew tobacco are also prone to bad breath. Those who drink alcohol are also prone to bad breath. Even coffee drinks can be accused of having bad breath when the odor of strong caffeine is on the breath.

A doctor or a dentist can make the diagnosis of halitosis (bad breath). To make the diagnosis they look at the medical history, symptoms and an oral examination. One sign of diabetes is a “fruity breath” seen when individuals have uncontrolled diabetes. A breath that smells like urine may be a sign of kidney disease or kidney failure. These are reasons why it is important to get bad breath diagnosed.
