It’s Expensive to be Sick

The figures for ‘Health’ care in the US for 2005 are now out. Almost $2 trillion!

I have always felt that ‘Health Care’ is a misnomer…and that the correct term should be ‘Sick Care’. The reality is that the current system does not cater for those folk who make the effort to stay healthy; in fact, the system does nothing to encourage people to take responsibility for their own health and avoid becoming part of the ‘Sick Care’ system. Anyway, that’s another issue for another time.

The expenses related to the current system gobbled up 16% of the US GDP in 2005…an enormous figure!

I don’t think that these figures take into account the costs that individual families are subjected to in paying for their ‘health’ insurance which as all our American readers are well aware of, is very costly!

Wellness insurance?

Here is an interesting thought. If you consider yourself to be reasonably healthy with no pre-existing conditions, what about looking into the possibility of using some of the annual premium you are paying for ‘health’ insurance and investing in ‘wellness’ insurance?

You may be able to free up some money for this purpose by examining your current policy and either replacing it or adjusting it with one that has a high deductible. This way you are still covered against a serious illness or accident but you pay for your minor ailments yourself. The annual savings which could be significant you put in a ‘wellness’ savings account and draw down on that for expenses that will enhance your health.

You could use the money in that account to contribute towards your supplement costs, or, adding healthier choices to your diet or, having more extensive medical check ups to establish better your overall health condition. In other words being pro-active rather than waiting for an adverse health ‘event’ to occur.

If everyone was more proactive in taking care of their health and being more aware of what causes them to get sick, just think of the impact that it would have on the figures quoted above. Think about the positive effect it would have on taxes, but more importantly the flow on effect that happier and healthier people would have in the overall community.

Wishful thinking I know but…the tide is turning, and people are becoming more aware that good health is an individual choice…but, it is not going to be easy to raise the awareness of those people who contribute the most to the statistics. A sad but true fact!
