Does a Yeast Infection Affect Your Period?

Women who are having their periods are more likely to get a yeast infection as it occurs whenever the natural pH balance of the vagina is affected. With your periods comes a hormonal change, which causes an imbalance in your system.

The signs and symptoms of a yeast infection are very clear and obvious. There will be a noticeable thick, white discharge, which looks like cottage cheese. There will itching of the vagina and surrounding area. There will be redness and soreness around the vaginal area, pain with sex, and burning on urination.

A yeast infection occurs because of unregulated good bacteria. Because this deregulation is missing, it does not monitor the fungus. This fungal bacterium is referred to as Candida albicans. Because of this malfunction the yeast change the atmosphere of the vagina and multiply.

Treatment for a yeast infection while having your period is a bit more messy, but unavoidable. Treatment typically consists in the form of an over-the-counter cream that is applied either vaginally with an applicator or by a systemic medication that is taken orally in the form of a pill.

Although somewhat more inconvenient, the vaginal treatment is chosen more often because it is fast acting. It also does not require prescription from a doctor. It is sold at any pharmacy and in most local stores. It seldom interacts, if at all, to other medications that you might be taking. The oral medication is clean and easy. You must, however, have a prescription from your physician. It is only obtainable through a pharmacy. With the pill, there is the potential for drug interaction. This choice of treatment is chosen by very few women.

If you feel that you have signs of a yeast infection you will need to see your doctor as soon as possible. Waiting to start treatment will result in a higher degree of symptoms that will increase your discomfort.

To avoiding getting a yeast infection you should try to prevent it from happening in the first place. Decreasing your risks of getting a yeast infection is to avoid using certain contraceptive methods, such as oral contraceptive medication, diaphragms or spermicides. Dampness creates a perfect environment for bacteria.

To avoid dampness you need to dry yourself thoroughly after bathing. Always wear cotton underwear and wipe vagina from front to back. Avoidance of tight clothing, douching and wearing damp clothing will inhibit bacteria growth. Although preventing a yeast infection is almost impossible, we at least can take steps to cut down on them by following these helpful hints.
