Can Food Increase Your Metabolism?

You hear talk of the possibility that food can increase metabolism. Do you ever wonder if the talk is true?

The truth is that any food will increase your metabolism in the first hour after the food is eaten. Protein foods require approximately 25% more energy than other foods to digest so they may rev up the metabolism a little bit more. This is why models eat a high-protein snack as a way to get their metabolism moving.

Studies have shown that when red pepper is eaten after high-fat foods, metabolism shows the most increase in rate. Another study, of athletes who ate red pepper with high-carbohydrate meals boosted their resting and active metabolic rates, but it does not have a lasting effect on the metabolic rate.

Green tea contains a substance called EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate). EGCG is a powerful antioxidant that may have the same kind of calorie-burning effect that is seen with hot pepper. 90 milligrams of EGCG taken with 50 milligrams of caffeine that is taken with meals boosted 24-hour energy expenditure by 4%.

Caffeine alone does not show the same results. The effect that green tea has as yet not been proven to have any significant weight loss effect though.

The best way to keep your metabolism moving at a faster rate is to build muscles, eat snacks that are low in calorie and high in protein, and also to keep exercising on a regular basis.

There are three factors that determine your metabolic rate and the rate at which your body uses energy for vital body processes is called the basal metabolic rate (BMR). The second factor is the rate you burn energy during physical activity.

The third factor is the rate at which you energy to digest the food that you have consumed. When you change your activity or the amount of food that you consume you can make a difference in your metabolic rate.

Exercise is the very best way to influence your metabolism. Increasing lean muscle mass will increase your metabolism. An increase in metabolism can aid in weight reduction. When you do aerobic exercising like walking, swimming or biking, you can speed up your metabolism for 4 to 8 hours.

When you lift weight, do resistance training or strength training it does not speed up your metabolism but it does burn fat and it does increase your lean muscle mass which the lean muscle mass will increase your resting metabolic rate.

If you do both aerobic exercise and resistance training than you will have the better of two worlds (burning fat and boost your metabolism).

If you exercise in the morning you will enjoy the benefits of a faster metabolism throughout the day. If you want to pump your metabolism throughout the day than do some exercising in short 10 to 15 minute bursts every couple of hours.

Take an exercise break anytime that you can during the day and you will help your body to burn fat. If you increase the amount of exercise that you do, even by just a little bit you will speed up your metabolism.
