Exercise Helpful for Congestive Heart Failure

Most cardiologists and primary care physicians recommend that patients with congestive heart failure should not exert themselves and should avoid any type of exercise. The theory was that exercise could place an increased load on the already stressed heart resulting in decompensated heart failure and death. Data from research studies may soon change these recommendations. It appears that a low level of exercise may actually be beneficial in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). An article published in the American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology shows that in animals with a certain type of heart failure, low-intensity exercise training delays the onset of decompensated heart failure. This study along with some other human studies are suggesting that low level exercise (like a brisk but not taxing walk) may be a better recommendation than avoidance of exercise.
