Notes: Evening Primrose Oil is expensive and is normally blended in a small (often 10%) dilution with other carrier oils. Since the shelf life of this oil is very short, it is a good idea to mix it with wheatgerm oil to extend its shelf life. Can be taken internally.

  • Scent: Light and Sweet
  • Consistency: Thin
  • Absorption/Feel: Leaves a trace of oil on skin.
  • Color: Medium Yellow to Deep Green
  • Shelf Life: 6 months. Storing in a cool, dark area may extend shelf life.

Action: Emollient, antirheumatic, calmative, relaxant, astringent

Benefits: Evening primrose has exceptional moisturizing properties and used externally it is effective in helping eczema, psoriasis, pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS), rheumatoid arthritis and weight reduction. It is reputed to nourish skin and hair, rosacea, sun-damaged skin, sunspots, acne, hyperpigmentation, and fight the effects of aging.

Evening primrose is also reported to reduce hyperactivity in babies and young children when rubbed onto their skin. Considered an astringent and recently used for PMS syndrome.

Chemical Analysis: Approximately 8% saturated fat, 72% linoleic acid (an omega-6 essential fatty acid), 9% gamma linolenic acid (GLA, an omega-6 essential fatty acid), less than 1% alpha linolenic acid (an omega-3 essential fatty acid)

Precautions: Generally well tolerated, with reported minor adverse effects when taken internally including gastrointestinal upset (e.g., abdominal pain, indigestion, nausea, softening of stools) and headaches. Evening primrose oil is LIKELY SAFE for most people when used for up to a year.
