Perfumery BasicsOne of the most delightful aspects of essential oils is the ability to make your own individual perfume blends. In order to create your own personalized scent, you should play with oil combinations to find what works for you; however, there are some general guidelines that should be followed to come up with generally pleasing scents.

Perfumes are really very simple to make; all you need is a high-proof alcohol (a low-scent vodka or grain alcohol like Everclear work well); some amount of distilled water – how much you use depends on the ‘type’ of perfume, like cologne, eau de parfum, etc.; and essential oils. Start out with a blend of 70-95% alcohol and 5-30% water. To this, add 1-30% of the total in essential oils. You can use a single oil, or make a complex blend. If you use a blend, start with base notes, then add middle notes, then top notes.

Managing Parkinsons DiseaseThe degenerative disorder of the central nervous system known as Parkinson’s disease (PD) affects the motor skills and speech of the patient diagnosed with it. The disease is characterized by tremors, slowing of physical movements, muscle rigidity and also loss of physical movement.

There is no cure for Parkinson’s so the most the patient can expect is to be able to manage the symptoms and to maintain the highest possible quality of life for as long as possible. Minimizing disability, and reducing any side effects from drug therapy are goals to achieve the best quality of life.

Drugs are necessary in order to manage symptoms. They cannot stop the progression of the disease. There are many different drugs that can be used at different stages of the disease, where one drug stops working another is used to try to manage symptoms. Parlodel, tolcapone, pramipexole, trihexyphenidl, selegiline are all used in drug therapy for Parkinson’s. The patient may also be advised to make some lifestyle changes including rest nutrition and exercise.

Exercises with High Blood Pressure and Congestive Heart FailureStatistical updates from the American Heart Association in 2005 reported that 65 million Americans have high blood pressure and nearly 5 million are suffering from congestive heart failure. Statistics have also shown that as many as 75% of patients will die within eight years of the diagnosis of congestive heart failure.

In the past physicians have struggled with the question of exercise with individuals who suffer from congestive heart failure. The question relates to improving the prognosis versus further demand on an already overstressed heart. Tentative results from a research paper have found that low intensity exercise has delayed the onset of progressive congestive heart failure. Researchers also found that some of the classical cellular and physiological alterations also improved with low intensity exercise.

The research was performed at the University of Colorado and Ohio State University and published in the American Journal of Physiology Heart and Circulatory Physiology. Researchers believe that the key findings in this study were that exercise could delay the onset of decompensation, improves survivability and was dependence on the level of intensity of exercise. This indicates that although you can quickly push an individual with congestive heart failure too far, a trend of moderate intensity exercise has the potential for slowing the downward spiral.
