genital wartsGenital warts, as they are most commonly known, are technically termed HPV, the Human Papilloma Virus, and are thought to be the herpes virus by many people. This is not true.

The human papilloma virus and herpes are two different kinds of infection, although they are both sexually transmitted diseases. Genital warts are also known by the names condylomata acuminate or venereal warts. Genital warts are passed via the route of the skin and careful handwashing is an absolute necessity lest you can transfer the virus to other parts of the body.

Genital warts usually display themselves around the genitalia such as the anus, vulva, cervix and the vagina in a woman, and the anus, penis, and scrotum in a man. These warts are usually seen as flat, although sometimes shaped in a cauliflower fashion. The usual age group is people in their early 20s although all age groups can be infected with genital warts.

If not treated promptly, genital warts can go on to cause other complications, such as cervical cancer. The problem with genital warts is that symptoms do not always manifest themselves until well after you contract it. Therefore, treatment for it is often delayed.

Symptoms of Genital Warts

Early symptoms of genital warts can include itching, discoloration or discomfort in the area affected, dampness in the area that is affected, and burning pain in the area that is affected. Early symptoms of genital warts are your key to obtaining the proper medical treatment before complications do arise. Early symptoms of genital warts allow you the opportunity to maintain good health by avoiding this from happening.

Other symptoms of these warts that occur later are a noticeable bump or a swollen area around the genitalia that can appear to be grey, red, or pinkish in color. A woman with genital warts can experience unusual bleeding of the vagina and/or an increase in discharge from the vagina. Once you contract genital warts symptoms usually appear after three months time, although sometimes the symptoms do not manifest themselves for several years.

After a Diagnosis of Genital Warts

Although this is an extremely embarrassing and difficult topic to talk about, if you know that you have come into contact with an affected person or experience any of the early warning signs, seeking the advice and possible treatment is strongly encouraged to avoid any future complications. If you know that you have genital warts you need to be open and honest with any sexual partners so as to take precautions against spreading the genital warts. Above all else be sure and maintain good sexual health.

Be responsible about your sexual partners. Usage of condoms is highly recommended for the prevention of and against the spread of genital warts, as well as many other sexually transmitted diseases. Remember that abstinence is the only sure way that you will avoid any of the sexually transmitted diseases.
