Does Vitamin D Prevent Cancer?
Question: from Brenda
In your Total-Balance product, does it contain enough naturally compounded vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) to prevent cancer? If not, which brand should I get the Vitamin D3 to prevent cancer? I learned recently that enough Vitamin D is the key to prevent cancers.
Recently there has been quite a lot of publicity extolling high dose Vitamin D as a ‘cancer prevention’ protocol. There is no doubt that Vitamin D is a factor in helping prevent cancer, but it has to be put into perspective.
The sad fact is that a high proportion of the general population is deficient in Vitamin D and that is without doubt a factor in contributing to an increased risk of cancer. In other words it is not a matter of taking mega doses of Vitamin D but rather ensuring that you don’t have a deficiency. Remember that most cancers are due to a nutrient deficiency!
It just so happens that lately the focus has been on Vitamin D. The same ‘principles’ could apply to folic acid, or maybe zinc or any one of a multitude of other nutrients. The reality is that if you have a deficiency in any of a broad array of nutrients then you are at risk for contracting cancer.
OK…back to your question, “Is there enough Vitamin D3 in Total Balance”. The answer is yes…under normal circumstances. As with many other vitamins and minerals you have to be careful to get it just right. Too much Vitamin D can actually draw calcium out of the bones, if there is not enough circulating calcium. Also too much Vitamin D can be toxic.
It is for these reasons that you must not ‘jump in’ and start taking mega doses of Vitamin D just on the strength of what the media is saying. If you do that you should then start taking mega doses of calcium…then what about all the other vitamins and minerals? In other words where do you draw the line?
If you feel that you are likely to be deficient in Vitamin D then I would suggest that you arrange with your Doctor to have a blood test to check your levels. Then…if needed you could add some more Vitamin D to your supplement program, so long as you also add additional co-factors such as calcium and magnesium.
It is sad that so many people are deficient in Vitamin D but it is not surprising given the conditioning that the general population has been subject to related to sunlight exposure.
As you probably know sunlight is a crucial component in Vitamin D synthesis. You should ensure that you get adequate exposure over as much of your body as frequently as you can. That does not mean burning yourself. Oh…in that regard you will find that by taking Total Balance you will not burn as easily as you did before…but, it takes time to build up that protection.
So, in summary, be aware of your Vitamin D intake. If you don’t get much sun exposure then you may well be deficient unless you have been having a good diet and been on Total Balance for some time. In that case it may be worth adding some additional Vitamin D3 to your supplement regime. If you do, I would not go more than 400IU’s a day and I would only do this if I had no exposure to sunlight.
To use higher doses than this then have a blood test first. Also, factor into your intake any other Xtend-Life products that you are using as some of them also have Vitamin D3. They have all been developed to be combined with no risk. However, if you add further supplements on top of those then you need to count up what your total daily intake is.
