Coping with Diverticulitis (Overcoming Common Problems)

Diverticular disease is a digestive disorder caused by enflamed diverticula, or pouches, in the colon. A common cause is constipation due to lack of fibre in the diet. Diverticulitis is extremely common, and a half to two thirds of all people in Europe and North America will experience it, while around 6,500 people a year are admitted to hospital because of diverticulitis in the UK, and 440,000 in the US. Many more require outpatient treatment. Symptoms may include cramps, bloating, constipation, fever, nausea, vomiting, chills, abdominal pain, and rectal bleeding, while complications may include peritonitis. Treatment is with antibiotics, though lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise can make a great difference; a person’s state of mind can also be an influence. This book looks at the treatment and self-management of diverticular disease – while the doctor can help, much can be done by the individual to minimise the effect of this condition. Subjects covered include: types of diverticular disease; diagnosis and tests; treatment, including laxatives, fluids and antibiotics; exercise and rest; diet and probiotics; and emotions and living with diverticular disease.

The Doctor’s Guide to Gastrointestinal Health: Preventing and Treating Acid Reflux, Ulcers, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Diverticulitis, Celiac Disease, Colon … Pancreatitis, Cirrhosis, Hernias and more Reviews

Review by Joseph S. Maresca:

This is an excellent medicinal reference on the workings of the

gastrointestinal system. The book is written from the perspective

of conventional medicine. It discusses classic gastrointestinal

issues; such as, difficulty in swallowing, gas, non-cardiac

discomfort, chest pain, nausea, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss and constipation. Abdominal pain on the left side is associated with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). Pain on the right

side of the abdomen may be Crohns related. Diarrhea and rectal

bleeding are the classic symptoms of Crohns disease. The CT scan,

MRI, endoscopy and colorectal examinations are the classic

invasive techniques for detection. Non-invasive tests involve

analysis of the breath, blood tests, stool and fecal occult exams. Duodenal ulcers are caused by H-pylori. Standard treatments are H2 blockers, pepcid AC and proton pump inhibitors.

Prilosec is a classic proton inhibitor.

The work is a must for any health enthusiast. The problems

described are classic middle-age conditions encountered by

large portions of the population for a variety of reasons

ranging from genetics to junk food consumption. The work is

a solid investment for the price charged. Acquiring this volume will help you to discuss any of the symptomatology intelligently

with your primary care physician or medical specialist.

Diverticulitis: Safe Alternatives Without Drugs Thorsons Natural Health (The Self Help Series) Reviews

Review by Julie E. Chandler:

While I’m not a big fan of self-help books in general, I found this little gem to be worth its weight in gold. I’ve read it and re-read it, and I’ve even thought of writing to the author to thank him for writing such an important book for those of us who have long suffered with diverticulosis/diverticulitis and have run into a wall at our doctor’s offices. I had been suffering off and on for the past four years with all the pain and discomfort an “attack” brings and repeatedly received no more help from my doctors than tests and prescriptions. During the visit before I turned to Dr. White’s little book, after tests again had failed to show why I felt so very sick, my too-busy doctor wrote out a prescription for yet another drug and, when I asked her what to do about the antispasmodic I was already on, she said,”Huh? What are you on, now?” This was a drug I had been taking for over two years, which she had prescribed, it had unpleasant side effects, and my doctor had completely forgotten (with the file right in front of her)! That’s when I decided to accept the challenge of Dr. White’s book — the challenge to cure myself, natually. The first thing I did was to go off the drug I’d been on. Until I read this book, I had never had the courage to do such a thing, because I feared even worse pain. Within 24 hours, the mental confusion and clouding I had been experiencing for 4 weeks had completely disappeared, and I launched Dr. White’s regime with firm resolve. As I fasted for three days and followed religiously Dr. White’s instructions, I felt better and better. The pain in my gut lessened and lessened and is now, two weeks later, almost entirely gone. When I first bought this book I looked at it and put it aside, because I wasn’t desperate enough to give up food, alcohol, and caffiene for three days. I just didn’t think I could do it. But, along with my doctor’s indifference, the pain of this last episode convinced me I had no choice if I wanted to feel well again. Well, I now feel I have my life and my health back, and I’ve learned a whole new respect for my body. I’m happier, calmer, nicer to be around, and I have energy for the first time in many, many months … all because of Dr. White’s little green book.Dr. White writes well and intelligently about the workings of the body (he is a D.O.), and his advice is easy to follow. Inasmuch as he’s English, some of the terms he uses are a little odd, but I actually enjoyed that quirkiness. If you or someone you love suffers from diverticulosis/diverticulitis, you should buy this book now. It can change your life, too.

Once you set aside the Author’s rantings about Science, Food Manufactures and the Medical Society, this book is GREAT.It conirmed some of the action I had already taken regarding a fast during a bout, but the most important and revelationary information I got is the “Toilet Drill” and “Abdominal Ecercises”. Never had I ever been told how to empty my bowels to avoid stress on the stomach. That information alone, was well worth the book.Dont give up on the book, the 104 pages was information I already knew, but the last 14 are worth it.

Review by Samuel Sooknanan:

This is a very down to earth easy to understand book. I enjoyed reading it because it takes a revolutionary look at health problems. The book is quite frank to the point of great humor in some parts.

My only reservation was that it was a bit short in content…I would have liked to read more in one volume.

Review by David P. Smelser:

Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Diverticulitis: A Self-Help Plan

Defines the irritable bowel syndrome and gives clear explanations of its causes and those of the related diverticulosis, and what you can do about them. To make it easier to understand why things go wrong there is a chapter on how the digestive system works. This is followed by a common-sense and non-judgemental approach to cleaning the colon and cutting down on everyday “poisons” such as tea, coffee, alcohol and tobacco. More specific causes are dealt with – eg candida, food intolerance, the effects of prescribed drugs, low blood sugar, hyperventilation and an exhausted nervous system. The text is straightforward and the advice on diets and bodywork easy to follow.

Healthy Digestion the Natural Way: Preventing and Healing Heartburn, Constipation, Gas, Diarrhea, Inflammatory Bowel and Gallbladder Diseases, Ulcers, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and More Reviews

Review by Samuel Chell:

Twenty direct, easily referenced chapters, each with recommendations for herbs and supplements (many not inexpensive), exercises, even reflexology pressure points. Take your pick of ailments and treatments. The author offers all you could wish for. If you suffer from IBS, go right to chapter 14. There’s much useful and sensible info here along with a plethora of alternative therapies and theses (some presented with too much certainty–the controversial candida yeast connection, for example, or recommendations to “flush out” your gall bladder by drinking a “pint” of olive oil upon retiring and arising!). But thoughtful readers will probably want to supplement this text with one that is more mainstream, cautious and personal in its approach. Check out titles by Janowitz and Van Vorous.

Whoever D.Lindsey Berkson is, I am glad she eixists. A practitioner that makes sense, is easy to understand, and who comes from science and the heart at the same time. Sweet relief. This is the first book that helps me understand why all my other attempts to heal myself have failed. I now get how to take vitamins, home tests for my digestion, and perform home cleansing and rebuilding programs that will make the rest of my healing attempts work. And I love that meditations, affirmation, visualizations and reflex points are given to augment the nutrients and herbs. And it is the easiest format and voice to comprehend what is actually going on. I am only sorry she is no longer in practice. I would go to wherever she was. But I await her next books and her web site with eagerness. Berkson, a job well-cone!

The Fiber for Life Cookbook Reviews

Review by Mimi G. Clark:

In The Fiber For Life Cookbook, acclaimed natural foods author
Bryanna Clark Grogan’s challenge is to make us believe that “fiber” and “gourmet” can be used in the same sentence. With all of the attention focused on protein, fats, and carbohydrates today, fiber has been virtually ignored (except for Weight Watcher’s, which made the connection between fiberous foods and weight loss many years ago). Simply put, when the outside layer of seeds, fruits, legumes, etc., is stripped away in a refining process, dietary fiber is also discarded. Grogran explains that dietary fiber is responsible for balancing alkalinity and acidity, and for detoxifying chemicals in the gastrointestinal system that can cause diseases such as cancer. Without fiber in our diet, cancer-producing toxins are produced in the gut by bacteria that flourish in a fiber-deficient system. When this occurs, Grogan points out that constipation may be a precursor to such life-threatening diseases as diverticulitis, large bowel cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, gallstones, hiatus hernia, varicose veins, obesity, diabetes, and hemorrhoids, many of which do not occur in those consuming a high fiber diet. A chart of “Fiber Superstars” lists 50 foods containing at least 4.5 grams of fiber per serving (a cup of kidney beans contains a whopping 19.4 grams of fiber!). This informative chart is now on my fridge. Another chart lists the fiber and calorie content of over 100 name-brand foods. Sample menus, with suggestions for increasing fiber, are listed for meals and snacks. Over 150 pages are devoted to recipes for breakfast, breads, appetizer/snacks, salads/dressings/sauces, soups, beans, vegetables, grains, and desserts. With a flair for international cuisine, Grogan circles the globe with her inventive Yemiser Wat (Ethiopian Spicy Lentils), Eggless Crepes, Pizza Dough with flax seeds, Pasta Alla Primavera, Vegetarian Feijoada (Brazilian Black Beans), Chiles Rellenos Casserole, Red Lentil Dal, French Strawberry Pie, and Italian-Style Apple Tart, to name but a few of the mouth-watering, high-fiber, vegan dishes. I highly recommend this book to anyone who doubts that the words “fiber” and “gourmet” can indeed be used in the same sentence.

Review by Søren Jensen:

The benefits of fiber can hardly be argued – and Bryanna’s new cookbook tells you how to incorporate fiber in your diet AND make it taste delicious too. In this book she focuses more on vegetables, beans and grains, to a larger extend than in her previous books which focused more on tofu, seitan, and other (low-fiber) meat subs – Bryanna gets inspired from cuisines from all over the world. The Italian dishes – taken from her fabulous “Nonna’s Italian Kitchen” – are outstanding (such as her Pasta alla Primavera), even a humble-looking recipe like Irish mashed potatoes with kale is a gourmet meal. There are Chinese-style, Latin-American, Indian, and Middle-East-style dishes, ranging from soups (The Lentin Soup is so good!), salads and dinner entrees, even several cake recipes! This may not be as ground-breaking an effort as her truly outstanding vegan masterpieces “Nonna’s Italian Kitchen” and “Authentic Chinese Cuisine” – but less can do! This is a completely respectable vegan cookbook that you will definitely enjoy for everyday use. Me, I’m already starting to look forward to Bryanna’s next book …
