The self-esteem of young women in the US is a serious issue.
When a young woman doesn’t feel good about herself she is at risk for many things. In addition to physical and emotional abuse, she is more apt to exhibit drug-seeking behavior, abuse alcohol, and make poor life choices.
How can we help young women to increase their confidence and develop better self-esteem?
One way is to encourage them to try yoga and meditation.
Yoga can help you develop better self-esteem
Yoga classes are available in cities all over the country and most young people are familiar with it as a form of exercise. It involves stretching the body into different poses to strengthen muscles and develop flexibility. But joining a yoga class can do a lot for mental health too.
Yoga can help a young woman develop better self-esteem by doing the following:
• Creating a Sense of Community
The social aspect of yoga is very important. By practicing yoga with a group, you are able to connect with a community of like-minded people on a regular basis.
• Becoming Comfortable with your Body
One of the leading causes of low self-esteem in young women is poor body image. Yoga is a practice that makes the body healthy and strong.
• Providing Stress-relief
Self-esteem and stress are deeply connected. When you know how to avoid the signs of chronic stress like rapid heartbeat, cortisol production and high blood pressure, then it can help you to be more confident and develop better self-esteem in other areas as well.
• Decreasing Anxiety
Anxiety involves a feeling of loss of control which doesn’t do a lot to boost self-esteem! But yoga teaches you how to relax and take control of your feelings which can be a great self-esteem booster.
Meditation can also help you develop better self-esteem
Meditation shares some of the same benefits which help develop better self-esteem as yoga. Meditation for anxiety is actually very powerful and can relieve a great deal of stress.
Meditation can help young women develop higher self-esteem by doing the following:
• Increasing Self-awareness
It provides a tool for recognizing your feelings and letting them pass. Instead of staying a place of discomfort, you can accept a feeling and then it go.
• Connecting you to All Beings
Meditation increases awareness of not only your own thoughts and feelings, but of everything around you. It helps you to see the connection between all of humanity, even people who may try to make you feel bad about yourself. This awareness of connectedness can help you accept who you are.
• Restoring Sleep
Meditation makes it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep instead of ruminating over problems. When we feel refreshed and our minds are clear, we are better able to see things for what they really are.
• Providing an Outlet
Meditation can be done almost anywhere- it can provide a way to deal with stress no matter where you are. Sometimes we need a quick way to let go of bad feelings and meditation is a great tool to do this.
By showing young women the benefits of yoga and meditation we can get them involved in the practices early. Then they will see how much better they feel about themselves when they are able to connect with who they really are deep inside.
