Correlation between age and AlzheimersAlzheimer’s disease is a common form of dementia in older people that involves parts of the brain that control thought, memory and language. This affects the ability of the person to carry out daily activities. On autopsy scientists find abnormal clumps and tangled bundles of fibers in the brains, usually the hypocampus. They also have lower levels of specific chemicals that carry complex messages.

Some researchers theorized that the impaired cognitive abilities of people diagnosed with diabetes maybe related to Alzheimer type changes in the brain. This theorized correlation between age and Azheimer’s would also include the second diagnosis of diabetes.

However, after further study Dr.s Heitner and Dickson from Albert Einstein College of Medicine found that there was no significant differences between older diabetics and other control subjects with respect to the pathology found on postmortem studies.

The results confirm reports that diabetes isn’t a risk factor for Alzheimer-type changes in the brain and suggest that there are other factors that are responsible for the cognitive impairment found in people suffering from diabetes.

The diagnosis of Alzheimers disease is fairly common with up to 4 million people suffering from the disease each year. The correlation between age and Alzheimer’s disease begins after age 60. The risk of developing the disease will increase with age. Those who are younger may get the illnesses but it isn’t nearly as common.

The diagnosis of the disease has been stable with 3% of both men and women suffering between the ages of 65 and 74 and nearly half of those who reach 85 diagnosed with the disease. Between age 65 and 85 the number of people diagnosed with Alzheimers doubles every 5 years.

The cause of Alzheimers is not known and while the risk of developing it increases with age it is NOT considered a normal part of aging. Scientists have discovered three rare genetic changes that are predictive of Alzheimer’s and another three that are suggestive of the development increasing the risk for those individuals who carry the genes. However, the correlation between age and Alzheimer’s continues in the genetic investigation of the disease because the expression of these genes don’t usually occur until the person reaches 65 or older.

Because the actual cause or causes of Alzheimer’s isn’t known it is difficult to define ways in which people may be able to prevent the disease. There are several risk factors that are significantly linked with the development of the disease and if individuals work to decrease those risk factors they maybe able to prevent or delay the diagnosis of the disease.

Known risk factors include:

  • depression
  • high levels of homocysteine
  • Low levels of DHEA, an adrenal hormone
  • Defective mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation may play a role
  • An excessive production of beta amyloid
  • A change in the production of neurotransmitters
  • Aluminum some studies suggest that an accumulation may result in Alzheimers
  • Non use of the brain at a young age and developing Alzheimer’s
  • Advancing age
  • Family history of Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease
  • Downs syndrome
  • Head trauma
  • Depression
  • Reduced blood flow
  • Stroke
  • Estrogen imbalance
  • Poor word fluency
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Deficiency in B vitamins
  • Free radical damage
  • Exposure to neurotoxins
