Learning to deal with the fact that your life has just been changed by a degenerative disease may take some serious adjustment. The affect that it could have on your life might depend upon the severity of your symptoms.

Fortunately, more and more medications are being approved by the FDA for use in treating the symptoms of this condition. Although there is not yet a known cure, vast improvements in peoples’ lives have resulted from finding the right medicine.

However, it may still take time for a person to understand the causes, symptoms, and progression of this disease can take. It may also take family members time to adjust to living with a person who has been affected.

The Nature of the Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a very unpredictable disease that can be hard to manage. To make matters more complicated, each case of diagnosis is very unique.

Therefore, no simple answers are available for those who suffer Parkinson’s disease. That is why so many efforts are being made to find alternative treatments that will work in a new way.

Furthermore, every single day research teams are studying combinations of new formulas to be used for treatment. This hopefully will bring hope to people who may suffer for generations to come.

However, part of the hope is taking time to understand this condition. It may also require acceptance of limitations that this condition may bring.

Effects of Parkinson’s Disease

Many people who suffer symptoms of this disease may be still able to function normally for most of their lives before the condition becomes worse. Moreover, some people fortunately only experience minor symptoms of this condition.

As time passes, this condition often does get worse, though. Therefore, some people may have to lighten their work load, take a sabbatical, or reduce the number of hours they put in during the day or week. They may also be able to move to a new department within the company the currently are employed.

The most reputable employers are very happy to accommodate someone struggling with this condition, especially if that employee has put in a number of years for a firm. Furthermore, some people may be able to take advantage of disability benefits. (Not that they would want to, but they are nice to have!)

Support Available

During times of uncertainty people can rely upon support groups as well as online sites for more information it is here they may find and love an acceptance like no other. Furthermore, hotlines and support groups are available for the purpose of supporting caretakers and families of PD patients.

New Treatments

One of the newest ways to treat this condition is using a procedure called deep brain stimulation. This method of treatment involves the implantation of electrodes in the brain. Certain phases of this procedure were approved by the FDA first in 1997 and in 2002.

New Awareness

One of the most popular resources available is the Michael J. Fox Foundation. This organization continues to fund a variety of projects and teams dedicated to studying aspects of Parkinson’s disease. New discoveries are being made regarding causes, symptoms, and treatments.
