Home Remedies for Urinary Tract Infections

December 12th, 2006

Urinary Tract Infections are a serious problem that affects almost every segment of the population. UTI is known for its frequent reoccurrences. Women, due to certain reasons are more prone to UTI than men. Pathogens, in the shape of virus, bacteria, or microorganisms enter the urinary tract either from downside (through the urethra) or from upside (from the blood stream to the urinary tract).

The only effective and sure way to treat UTI is through a Urinary Tract Infection cure involving the use of antibiotics. In cases of Bladder Infections like interstitial Cystitis, a Bladder Infection treatmentl regime is followed.

Although home remedies and self-treating are not an alternative to Urinary Tract Infection cure they go a along way in symptomatic relief and may even help in preventing future infections.

Howsoever strange it may sound but many of the best home remedies do not require any shopping or confirmation from experts and are completely harmless. All that they require is a small effort in remembering them and ensuring that you practice them regularly. They can actually help relieve some pain and discomfort and prevent UTI reoccurrence and aid a speedy recovery, in conjunction with the medication under Urinary Tract Infection cure that you might be taking.

Plain water is one of the most common and simple home remedies for UTI. Drinking adequate amount of water every day flushes the urinary tract. Secondly, whenever you feel like urinating, you should do so without waiting. The longer the urine remains in your bladder, the more chances it gives to bacteria to grow if they have by any chance entered the bladder.

Women need to be careful while wiping and do so from front to back rather than the other way round. This helps prevent any bacteria from stool to carry near to the urethra or vagina. The length of the urethra in women is much shorter which makes the risk greater for pathogen to travel upwards to the urinary tract.

Shower is a better way to bathe because tub baths too can result in bacteria travel up through the urethra. Personal hygiene and cleaning of the genitals regularly, especially after sexual intercourse, ensures that you are not providing bacteria with a convenient breeding ground.

Apart from these prevention procedures, there are some home remedies that can prove helpful in prevention as well as, to a certain extent, cure UTI.

Cranberry juice is by far the most popular home remedy and is known to complement Urinary Tract Infection cure in more than one ways. It is a natural way to prevent infections of the urinary tract and also speed up recovery. Six to eight ounces of pure cranberry juice everyday should suffice in most cases. Make sure to consume only pure cranberry juice as some of the drinks and cocktails have insufficient quantity of cranberry juice.

Another way to self-treat UTI is by use of Vitamin C Supplements. Vitamin C increases the level of acidity in your urine that in turn decreases the number of harmful bacteria in the urine.

All said and done, despite the efficacy of home remedies and preventions, it is imperative that you consult your physician for proper urinary track infection cure or Bladder Infection treatment.

Natural Urinary Tract Cleanser

August 23rd, 2006

D-Mannose is a simple sugar that occurs naturally in some plants, including cranberries. Although small amounts of D-Mannose are metabolized by the human body, much of it is rapidly excreted in the urine.

In the bladder, D-Mannose can adhere to bacterial lectins, preventing them from sticking to the lining of the bladder. Bacteria can then be flushed away during urination, thereby precluding the formation of colonies within the urinary tract. Because insubstantial amounts of D-Mannose are used by the body, it does not interfere with blood sugar regulation.

D-Mannose is a simple sugar that cures more than 90% of all Urinary Tract Infections (most Urinary Tract Infections are caused by E-Coli and D-Mannose is most effective on E-Coli) and, best of all, it does this without killing a single bacteria. Nearly 15 years of clinical experience has shown that D-Mannose is just as effective as antibiotics are at curing Urinary Tract Infections. Seems to good to be true, right? An all natural simple sugar that’s completely safe, highly effective, inexpensive, and available without a prescription.

HOW IT WORKS

The answer is found in the interaction between D-Mannose and the bacterium found in over 90% of all Bladder Infections, Escherichia coli (”E. coli”). No, not the infamous E.coli mutants associated with unsanitary food processing that has hospitalized and killed people.

It’s the normal E.coli found as part of the “normal microflora” in every intestinal tract. But even normal E.coli do not belong in the bladder and urinary tract. In these areas they multiply and become an undesirable infection.

Why doesn’t the normal flow of urine from the Kidneys through the urethras into the bladder and thence beyond simply carry the E.coli right along with it? What allows the E.coli to “stick” to the inner walls of the bladder and even work their way upward (like Spiderman) in some cases reaching as far as the Kidneys?

The “cell walls” of each E.coli are covered with tiny fingerlike projections. The very tips of these projections are an amino acid-sugar complex, a “glycoprotein” also called a “lectin”. E.coli “lectins” have the unfortunate capability of enabling the bacteria to “stick” to the inside walls of our bladders and urinary tracts, so they can’t be rinsed out by urination.

Fortunately, D-Mannose “sticks” to E.coli lectins even better than E.coli lectin “sticks” to human cells. When we take a large quantity of D-Mannose, almost all of it spills into the urine through our Kidneys, literally “coating” any E.coli present so they can no longer “stick” to the inside walls of the bladder and urinary tract. The E.coli are literally rinsed away with normal urination!

WHO CAN TAKE D-MANNOSE?

Who can’t? Because it is so effective and benign, even pregnant women who are susceptible to recurrent Urinary Tract Infections can safely take D-Mannose as a preventative measure to ward off future attacks. D-Mannose is 100% safe for infants and young children and they will find the taste wonderful (it is sugar!).

And unlike antibiotics, one can safely stop treatment in a few days. An existing infection can be cleansed in as little as 1-3 days, after which you can stop taking D-Mannose if you wish. What about people who have Diabetes? Diabetics usually need to limit their intake of sugar. If you have Diabetes some people do report temporary increases in blood sugar levels, but the effect is not great and never permanent, lasting only for the length of time D-Mannose is used. D-mannose is very safe, even for long term use, although most women (or the very occasional man) with single episodes of bladder or Urinary Tract Infection will only need it for a few days at most.

Although D-mannose is a simple sugar, very little of it is metabolized. It doesn’t interfere with blood sugar regulation, even for diabetics. It creates no disruption or imbalance in normal body microflora. In the less than 10% of cases where the infection is a bacteria other than E. coli, antibiotics can be started in plenty of time.

(Many physicians will likely advise collecting a urine specimen for culture, if possible just before starting D-mannose, so that the bacteria can be identified as rapidly as possible in the few cases where D-mannose doesn’t work.)

D-Mannose Powder by NOW - 3 oz.

Menopause and Urinary Infections

August 14th, 2006

Urinary Infections, also known as infections of the urinary tract, are one of the most common bacterial infections in women. The urinary tract is more susceptible to infections during Menopause due to reduction in hormonal support.

This tract, being a system for the removal of the body’s fluid wastes, is more vulnerable to multiplication of bacteria, leading to infection. Though not very serious, the Urinary Infections are painful. The symptoms disappear quickly after treatment with antibiotics.

Most women would experience infections of the urinary tract, at least once in their lifetimes, though many would have them repeatedly.

Menopause and Urinary Infections - Their Causes

Factors leading to increased risks of Urinary Infections in women are pregnancy, Urinary Infections as a child, Diabetes and Menopause. The bacteria, around the rectum or the vagina, which enter the urinary tract cause Urinary Infections in women. The female anatomy is prone to Urinary Infections as the very act, and sexual intercourse Massages the bacteria into the urethra.

A Weak Bladder could be the cause of Urinary Infections. The bladder stretches to hold urine and relaxes when it is emptied of urine. When, at times, you wait a long time to empty your bladder, the bladder is overstretched and the bladder muscle becomes weak. In this state, it does not completely empty the bladder and retains some urine, which increases the risk of infection.

When you have Urinary Infections, you have a strong urge to urinate. The act of urination is followed by sharp pain and a burning sensation in the urethra. Some times, even when the urge is great, very little urine is released. This frequent urge to urinate is one of the symptoms of Urinary Infections. It is advisable to have proper diagnosis done, since during Menopause similar symptoms could cause vaginal or vulva-related infections.

Ways to Prevent Urinary Infections during Menopause

The usual treatment is a course of antibiotics. Antibiotics need to be taken as prescribed and continued until the full treatment is complete. There are certain ways that you can prevent Urinary Infections from occurring:

· First and foremost is to practice good personal hygiene.

· After bowel movement and urination, wash the area around the rectum and the vagina thoroughly and ensure it is dried properly.

· Washing before and after sexual intercourse is a way of preventing Urinary Infections. Some doctors recommend urinating before and after a sexual intercourse to flush out bacteria.

· Drink plenty of water to ensure flushing out of bacteria from the urinary tract. Do not accumulate urine in the bladder, and empty it out at the earliest to reduce the risk of infections.

· Cotton panties, or panties with a cotton crotch, is recommended as cotton allows moisture to evaporate. Moist environment is a breeding ground for bacteria.

· Sexually active women can change sexual positions to cause less friction on the urethra. Women who tend to have frequent Urinary Infections are advised to take antibiotics after sexual intercourse.

Natural Solutions For Urinary Problems

June 25th, 2006

If you’ve had a Bladder Infection, you know that pain can be all-consuming during the acute stage. Bladder Infections are very common in women.

One in five American women will have at least one Urinary Tract Infection in her life. Of those, 20% will have another; 30% of those will have a third. An astounding 80% women who have had 3 Bladder Infections will have a 4th.

Some of these women go onto to develop a condition called “chronic UTI” where they relapse into a full blown Bladder Infection every few weeks. Urinary problems in men are less common, but when they occur, they are usually tied to prostate problems.

Urinary symptoms to watch for:

  • urgent, burning, painful, Frequent Urination, especially at night
  • foul-smelling, cloudy or bloody urine
  • urination pain accompanied with lower back and abdomen pain and pressure
  • nausea, chills and fever
  • urethral discharge

A urine test, available at drug stores or through your doctor, can confirm whether or not you truly have a Bladder Infection. It’s important to see a physician if you have symptoms. Some STDs can mimic UTI symptoms. Further, if you have pain above the waist, you may have a kidney infection or Kidney Stones instead of a Bladder Infection, which requires immediate attention.

What causes UTIs?

90% of Bladder Infections are caused by overgrowth of E.coli bacteria. Sexual intercourse is a common culprit, and is the main trigger for women ages 20 to 40. Women who are pregnant or who are in Menopause are also at a higher risk for developing Urinary Infections. Water is a key to bladder/kidney health.

Dehydration allows bacteria to concentrate and severely stresses the Kidneys. Including 8-10 glasses of pure, bottled water every day (can include herbal Teas) helps move bacterial wastes out of the body. Avoiding sugary foods that feed bacteria is another good idea.

The Health Benefits of Cranberry

June 6th, 2006

As long ago as 1840, German doctors discovered that the urine of people who ate cranberries contained a chemical called hippuric acid. The doctors were researching the finding that these same people had a significantly lower incidence of Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) such as Cystitis and pyelonephritis.

By the 1960s, when doctors were dispensing antibiotics like candy, the use of cranberries to counteract UTIs had fallen out of favor. Researchers claimed that tests showed the acidifying effect of cranberries and cranberry juice was inadequate to prevent infection.

However, as late as 1994, a Harvard University study involving 153 elderly women with repeated Urinary Tract Infections showed that regular consumption of cranberry juice cocktail decreased the frequency of UTIs. In a clinical trial from Weber State University in Utah, a concentrated cranberry product in dehydrated, capsule form – equivalent to 12 to 16 six ounce glasses of cranberry juice a day – was found to be equally effective. Some health professionals recommend the capsules over cranberry juice because of the sugar content of cranberry cocktail and the unpalatable taste of the unsweetened juice.

For many years it was believed that cranberries prevented or cured Urinary Tract Infections by acidifying the urine, thus creating an inhospitable environment for the Escherichia coli (E coli) bacteria usually responsible for UTIs.

However, a benchmark study by a team of scientists at Rutgers State University in New Jersey, published in the New England Journal of Medicine on October 6, 1998, disclosed that condensed tannins, called proanthocyanidins, are the compounds in cranberries responsible for preventing and treating UTIs. They work, not by making the urine more acid, but by preventing the bacteria from binding to the wall of the urinary tract. This non-adherence renders the bacteria harmless. The researchers used a process called bioassay-directed fractionation to isolate the compounds, a process that took almost five years to complete.

In addition to its principal role in combating Urinary Tract Infections, researchers are finding that cranberries may also have broad-spectrum antibiotic value against E. coli and other harmful bacteria. In a study conducted at the University of California at Irvine, two batches of soy broth, one with cranberry juice concentrate and one without, were incubated for a 24-hour period. According to the research letter published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, the broth containing the cranberry juice showed a significantly lower growth of bacteria than the one without.

Dentists in Israel report that cranberries and cranberry juice contain specific compounds that can block the formation of dental plaque and potentially lessen tooth decay and gum disease. Test tube research at the University of Wisconsin indicates that cranberry juice may help keep LDL Cholesterol (the bad type of Cholesterol) from oxidizing. If confirmed, the consumption of cranberries or cranberry juice will help prevent the build up of Cholesterol plaque in arteries, the major cause of Heart Disease and stroke.

Cranberries are an excellent source of Vitamins A and C and potassium. Although cranberry juice contains some tannins, it will not interfere with the absorption of Minerals. Furthermore, some older people with too little stomach acid, or those taking acid suppressors, may find that their ability to absorb vitamin B12 is impaired. Cranberry juice appears to enhance the absorption of this important vitamin in such cases.

Recommended Dosage

Health professionals recommend one capsule or tablet of a concentrated cranberry juice extract (400mg) two to four times per day. Two to three large (16oz.) glasses of cranberry juice may also be taken, but avoid the highly sugared cranberry “cocktails.” It’s hard to drink too much cranberry juice. The only contraindication is that diarrhea may develop with a very high consumption, such as three to four liters per day.

If you prefer your medicine as food, try the following two recipes:

Herbal Cranberry Punch

  • 1 quart of unsweetened cranberry juice
  • cup of fresh Lemon Balm leaves
  • ¼ cup of fresh Lavender flowers (or 1 Tbsp. of dried)
  • 2 Cinnamon sticks, broken
  • 6 whole Cloves

Bring two and a half cups of water to the boil while adding the Lemon Balm, Lavender, Cinnamon and Cloves. Reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and steep for another five minutes. Strain and combine with the cranberry juice in a pitcher. Add honey to taste as a sweetener. May be served cold or heated with more Spices if desired as a mulled drink. May also be combined with other fruit juices for a variety of flavors.

Cran-Apple Crisp

  • 4 organic apples, such as Gala, cored, peeled and diced
  • ½ cup of dried cranberries
  • ½ cup plus 1 Tbsp. of whole wheat flour
  • 1/3 cup of brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. of honey
  • Juice of ½ Lemon
  • ½ cup of whole oats
  • ½ cup of ground almonds (other nuts may be substituted)
  • ½ cup of butter, melted.

Combine the apples, cranberries, one Tbsp. of flour, honey and Lemon juice and pour into a greased, eight-inch baking dish. In another bowl blend together the half-cup of flour, brown sugar, oats, nuts and butter. Pack this mixture over the fruit. Bake at 375ºF for about 45 minutes until the top is brown and crisp.

Because all biochemic tissue salts are naturally occurring in the body, Triple Complex UT Tonic is safe to use for all ages from infancy to the elderly and can also be used with confidence during pregnancy and nursing.

Other benefits include relief from morning sickness and nausea during pregnancy, as well as improvement in the bio-availability of iron and oxygen in all body cells.

One of the properties that make biochemic tissue salts so effective is that they are known to assist healing on the cellular level, rather than simply suppressing symptoms.

May also be combined with UTI-Clear for Urinary Tract Infections

Use UT Tonic regularly to:

  • Treat the symptoms of Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), bladder problems and Cystitis without antibiotics.
  • Prevent and treat UTI’s during pregnancy
  • Assist with involuntary Incontinence (sudden involuntary spurts of urine)
  • Relieve the burning sensation associated with Urinary Tract Infections
  • Prevent morning sickness during pregnancy
  • Help with the distribution and bio-availability of iron and oxygen in all body cells.

What are the ingredients of Triple Complex UT Tonic?

Triple Complex UT Tonic contains:

Ferrum Phosphoricum (Ferrum Phos.) is a biochemic tissue salt which has many uses in the body. Two of the most important benefits are in the ability of Ferrum Phos to combat all types of infection and inflammation. Ferrum Phos also helps to strengthen the walls of the blood vessels and thus improves the body’s ability to distribute oxygen-rich blood and iron to all cells, thereby facilitating healing. Ferrum Phos is also very helpful during pregnancy and helps to reduce morning sickness and ease the involuntary Incontinence (sudden spurts of urine) often experienced by pregnant women, those with a prolapsed uterus and also in the elderly. An excellent Tissue Salt for the treatment of Cystitis or any Urinary Tract Infection.

Natrium Phosphate (Nat. Phos.): acts as a biochemical antacid, acid neutralizer and PH balancer. It helps to ease the burning sensation experienced during a Urinary Tract Infection and will also help with vaginal infections accompanied by an unpleasant itch. Nat Phos is invaluable for all ailments affecting the urinary system, including acid urine, bladder weakness, gallstones, kidney pain and nephritis. Like Ferrum Phos., it also helps to reduce nausea.

Kalium Sulphate (Kali Sulph.) is an effective natural antibiotic, carrying oxygen to the cells to assist with healing. Even severe infections can respond very well to Kali Sulph., which is useful for both chronic and acute infection.

Lactose: UT Tonic is presented in small lactose tablets. The amount of lactose used is very small and is generally well tolerated even by people who are lactose intolerant.

Triple Complex UT Tonic contains no gluten, artificial flavors, colors or preservatives

How do I use Triple Complex UT Tonic?

Slowly dissolve two to four tablets under the tongue in a clean mouth four to six times daily until symptoms subside.

Thereafter suck two to four tablets three times daily for five more days.

Babies and Small Children: Dissolve 1 - 2 tablets in a little warm water or milk.

Pregnant women can use Triple Complex UT Tonic preventatively during pregnancy (two to four tablets twice daily). Not only will it help with nausea, but it will also help to prevent the urinary tract problems and involuntary Incontinence so common during the months of pregnancy.

NOTE: Triple Complex UT Tonic contains biochemic tissue salts which are naturally occurring in the body. It is therefore completely safe for all ages from newborn babies to the elderly and can be used by pregnant and nursing women.

How long does one bottle last?

Depending on frequency of use, one bottle of Triple Complex UT Tonic lasts for a month or longer.

How long until I see results?

Improvement is usually noted within 2 - 3 days and treatment should be continued for 5 - 7 days to prevent relapse.

How has Triple Complex UT Tonic helped others?

“Your Triple Complex UT Tonic works wonders and I was so glad to find something that was safe during pregnancy. Thank you for all your help and advice - I will definitely be returning again!” - FG

“My baby is only 18 months old and has had so many Bladder Infections. The doctors can find nothing wrong but all they prescribed was one course of antibiotics after another which I began to feel uncomfortable with. I was referred to your product and me and my little girl have not looked back! Since beginning your UT Tonic, all her symptoms disappeared and there has been no sign of an infection for the past 6 months, which is like a miracle to me! I wish I had heard of you before! Thank you so much!” - Happy Mother

Diabetes and High Blood Pressure Can Lead to Kidney Failure

January 7th, 2006

Anyone who has Diabetes or High Blood Pressure should be aware that these conditions can lead to chronic Kidney Disease, and even to kidney failure. In fact, Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, and High Blood Pressure is the second leading cause. Diabetes and High Blood Pressure account for 70 percent of all cases of kidney failure in African Americans, and African Americans are four times more likely than whites to experience kidney failure.

The good news is that kidney failure doesn’t happen overnight. Instead, it usually occurs only after Kidney Damage has taken place over years, or even decades. By taking some precautions and monitoring your health, you can greatly reduce your risk of kidney failure.

Your Kidneys

Most people don’t stop to think about their Kidneys, yet life depends on them. These fist-sized organs are located on either side of the spine at about waist height, and they play a crucial role in maintaining health.

One vital function of the Kidneys is to filter waste products from the blood. Every two minutes, the body’s entire blood supply circulates through the Kidneys, where the blood is filtered. Cleansed blood flows back to the heart, and waste products are filtered out into the urine.

In addition to filtering waste, the Kidneys control the amount of fluid in the body, help regulate blood pressure, and aid in production of red blood cells and healthy bones.

Chronic Kidney Disease and Kidney Failure

Both Diabetes and High Blood Pressure can damage the Kidneys, which can lead to chronic Kidney Disease. Chronic Kidney Disease is a condition in which a person’s Kidneys are not working as well as they should.

Eventually, the damage from chronic Kidney Disease can lead to kidney failure. When a person has kidney failure, it means their Kidneys are not working well enough to keep the person alive, and the only options are dialysis treatment or a kidney transplant.

More than 7.4 million adults in the United States over age 20 have chronic Kidney Disease. That’s 4.5 percent of the population. There are currently 400,000 Americans who have progressed to kidney failure and are being kept alive through dialysis or kidney transplants.

More than 75,000 people die from kidney failure each year. Kidney Disease is America’s ninth leading cause of death. With early diagnosis and treatment, chronic Kidney Disease can be slowed and kidney failure may be avoided. Without treatment, chronic Kidney Disease can become kidney failure with little or no warning.

Symptoms and Screenings

Early chronic Kidney Disease usually has no symptoms. Chronic Kidney Disease sometimes develops so slowly that many patients don’t realize they are sick until the disease is advanced and they are rushed to the hospital for life-saving dialysis. The only way to find out if you have chronic Kidney Disease is to have some simple medical tests.

Sometimes there are warning signs of chronic Kidney Disease, especially when you are approaching kidney failure. The warning signs include:

• Swelling of parts of the body like the ankles, feet or face • Burning or unusual sensation during urination • Foamy, bloody or coffee-colored urine • Urinating more often, especially at night • Easy Bruising or bleeding • Listless or tired feeling

You should be tested for chronic Kidney Disease if you have experienced any of the above symptoms, or if you are Diabetic, have High Blood Pressure, or have a family member who has experienced Kidney Disease. Remember, you can feel perfectly fine and still have chronic Kidney Disease.

The simple tests for chronic Kidney Disease include a urine test for protein and a blood test for creatinine. Your doctor will use these tests to figure out a number called your GFR (glomerular filtration rate). The GFR number measures how well your Kidneys work. Your doctor should be able to explain exactly what your GFR number means.

Treatment

The treatment goal for a person with chronic Kidney Disease is to slow down or stop the damage to the Kidneys. It is very important for a person with chronic Kidney Disease to control their blood pressure, control their blood sugar if they are Diabetic, avoid certain medicines, and follow a special diet that a doctor or dietitian can explain.

Prevention

You can lower your risk of chronic Kidney Disease and kidney failure by living a healthy lifestyle: eat low-fat, low-salt foods, exercise regularly, limit alcohol intake and don’t smoke.

Another aspect of prevention is to get regular medical check-ups, which include screening for Diabetes, High Blood Pressure and chronic Kidney Disease – even if you feel fine!

If you have High Blood Pressure, take your medicine faithfully and see your doctor often.

If you have Diabetes, follow your diet, take your medication and test your blood sugar regularly.
