Using Sound To Release Emotions

April 16th, 2006

The role of emotions is very important to overall health and wellness. In my healing journey with Vibrational Yoga Therapy and in using it with the clients I assist, I have experienced the true healing power of honoring and expressing emotions and their sounds in a safe and sacred healing space, where the intent is to heal and become whole.

According to the ancient healing tradition of Chinese medicine and Yogic traditions, emotions play a key role in understanding dis-ease. The Five-Element Cycle has each element linked to a Yin/Yang organ, emotion and sound as well as other categories not mentioned here.

They are:

Wood - Liver/Gall Bladder - Anger - Shout Fire - Heart/Small Intestine - Joy - Laugh Earth - Spleen/Stomach - Worry - Sing Metal - Lung/Large Intestine - Grief - Weep Water - Kidney/Urinary Bladder - Fear - Groan

Other emotions that are powerful forces energetically are rage, hatred, bitterness, heartlessness, and shock. Many times, they also have accompanying sounds when the intent is to resolve the feelings and usher in healing and wholeness. Emotions-energy in motion-are experienced and felt on a vibrational level in the body and need a receptive, sacred space to be expressed. The emotions themselves are not the cause of dis-ease. The suppression, denial and avoidance of what is being felt ,is what sets the stage for dis-ease and imbalance.

Sound, being a vibrational energy, has a key role in overall health as well. When the sound is allowed to vibrate in relation to the emotion that is felt, energy that was blocked is freed up in the physical and astral bodies. In practice, for example, when grief is felt and the energy that often wells up in the chest, throat and eyes is allowed to move, weeping or crying may be the sound expressed. The actual sounding of the grief is a Healing Process because the energy is not blocked or held back to later manifest, sometimes years later, as a respiratory ailment, Sore Throat or Constipation. Being with the emotion and allowing it to tell its story in the form of a sound is key to resolving deeply rooted issues which often manifest physically. When the conscious awareness and intent to feel an emotion is present, and the sound is not judged or repressed, the awesome power of the vibrational energy of sound as movement is experienced. Vibration is movement, and when judgment is released on the form of that vibration or movement, authentic healing is possible.

Trusting the process, being willing to let go of “being in control” of a situation and honoring the space as safe and divinely protected are key in experiencing the healing benefits of sounding and emotional expression. Exploring parts of the self that may often be overlooked, misunderstood or judged can bring clarity, growth, and change for a healthier and more fulfilling life. By balancing the Charkras with Tuning Forks, and then taking the client thru a emotional release process, using vibrational Yoga therapy, one can get tremendous release, and bring ones self back into wholeness. The client is also inside a sacred healing space created for the process to unfold in a safe manner.

Tuning (Harmonic Healing)

April 9th, 2006

TUNING is the process of utilizing a Tuning Fork that is made up of a handle and two tines (tines; eg. pointed part). Tuning is a form of Sound Therapy. When struck by a rubber hammer, the tines vibrate and emit interruptions in surrounding air molecules. As one tine streams outward from its original positioning, surrounding air molecules are compressed within a compact area of space.

The Tuning Fork then creates a high-pressure area beside the tine. When the Tuning Fork tine moves inward, the tine expands and creates a low-pressure area next to itself. High pressure segments of the Tuning Fork are considered compressions and low pressure segments of the Tuning Fork are known as rarefactions.

While the Tuning Fork vibrates, a fluctuation of high and low pressure areas are produced. These segmented areas then move through the surrounding air and transport one sound wave from one location to another.

The theory behind Tuning Forks and Harmonic Healing is that emitted Sound Waves premote self-healing, deep Relaxation and restore mind and body balance. Tuning, or Harmonic Healing sessions are also said to reduce Stress, muscular Tension, spasms and pain. Claims of increased blood flow and circulation by freeing constriction of specific organs are also products of Tuning Fork therapy.

Tuning sessions are also known to transcend individuals to higher levels of consciousness and enable one to access deep, spiritual insights.

History of Sound Healing and the use of Tuning Forks in Sound Healing

by Charles Lightwalker

In 1550 in Pavia, Italy, Girolamo Cardano, a physician, mathematician and astrologer, noticed how sound was being perceived through the skin. In 1553 in Padua, Italy, H. Capivacci, a physician, noticed that this knowledge of sound being perceived through the skin might be used as a diagnostic tool for differentiating between hearing disorders located in the middle ear or in the acoustic nerve.

In 1684, German physician G. C. Schelhammer tried using a common cutlery fork to enhance the experiments that Cardano and Capivacci were working on.

In 1711 in England, Royal trumpeter and luteist, John Shore, created the first Tuning Fork. At that time, he lovingly and jokingly called it a pitch fork. It was made of steel A.D.H.D.a pitch of A423.5.

In 1800, German physicist E.F.F. Chladni, along with others, constructed a complete musical instrument based on sets of Tuning Forks.

In 1834, J.H. Scheibler presented a set of 54 Tuning Forks covering ranges from 220 Hz to 440Hz. Later, in Paris, J. Lissajous constructed a Tuning Fork with a Resonance box. Also in Paris, German physicist K. R. Koening invented a Tuning Fork which was kept in continuous vibration by a clockwork. In 1863 in Heidelberg, physiologist H. Helmholtz, used sets of electromagnetically powered Tuning Forks for his experiments on the sensations of tone.

Tuning Forks were indispensible instruments for producing defined sinusoidal vibrations and used as a diagnostic tool in otology. The most common system of determining the pitch of all twelve notes in a octave is the Equal temperament. The standard pitch here is A440. As a side note, equal temperament was proposed by Aristoxenus, a pupil of Aristotle, A.D.H.D.been in use in China for some centuries.

Mr. Hipkins, the head piano tuner in 1846, was instructed by Walter Broadwood to instruct his piano tuners in the use of equal temperament. To do this, he used two Tuning Forks; one for meantone at A433.5 and one for equal temperament at A436.

Even though musicians were among the first people to work with pitch, scientist enjoyed sharing knowledge and use of the Tuning Fork also. As far back as 583 BC, when the Greek philosopher, Pythagorus, made a device called the monochord and set the pitch to 256Hz.

The Egyptians and Greeks used the monochord to make intricate mathematical calculations. It wasn’t until around 1834 when a group of German physicists was able to use a mechanical stroboscopic device, that they were able to determine that the pitch of the Tuning Fork was at A440cps (which later was expressed as A440Hz). Even though the pitch of the note “A” in the 17th century varied from 373.3 Hz to 402.0 Hz, on July 27, 1987, the International society of Piano Builders and Technicians unanimously support A=440 Hz. as the international pitch standard for piano manufacturers and for modern piano and orchestral tuning.

Healing With Tuning Forks

April 8th, 2006

Tuning Forks enhance the ability to heal and make profound changes in the energy levels of the body using sound. Tuning Forks are used to correct imbalances, uncover emotions, stimulate growth, development, and transformation and facilitate inner harmony and wholeness.

The Tuning Forks are applied to the acupuncture and Acupressure points to access the Body’s Meridian and Chakra energy systems.

The Sound Waves of the Forks vibrate and travel deeply into the body along energy pathways, effecting human physiology and reaching places not easily accessed by traditional medicine. Applying the Forks stimulates and balances the body’s physical and subtle energy field to promote healing and inner harmony.

This cosmic tone helps us to shift from fragmented stagnation to an open world and infinite possibilities. It is this recognition, acceptance and participation in our destiny that opens us to a bigger picture.

We enter the world of creative origination, healing, unity and balance. This healing methodology has the power to connect us with the Source of original harmony. It provides access to a deep inner balance by sonically resetting negative cellular patterns.

The work is powerful and profound, it has the capacity to relieve chronic and debilitating illnesses and imbalances of the psyche and soul. Through the Healing system we are able to realign and re-harmonize ourselves with the greater Cycles of the universe.

The Effects of Tuning Fork sound Therapy:

The Tuning Forks are designed to be used on and above the body. When tapping the Tuning Forks, they produce a pure musical sound called a interval. As the body listens to the tones it will naturally adjust itself and come into balance.

The actual effect of Tuning Fork Sound Therapy can be verified by a number of methods which include Kinesiology muscle testing procedures to check the status of the organ meridian energy circuits and the Chakras which are directly over the main nerve plexus points in the physical body.

The “energetic” patterns of sound, color, light, toning, and music have the capability to “Tune -up” and balance the energy system, making it more efficient. Pain can be eased, Stress reduced and Depression lifted.

The Body- personalities become more vibrant and energized. The Mind-becomes clearer, creativity is increased, resulting in a wider perspective and an improved ability to make major decisions. The Emotions become more stable. The Spirit- is more peaceful, greater joy and improved well- being are found in the process.

Tuning Forks Balance and Energize the Chakras.

BioSonic Repatterning

April 8th, 2006

Biosonic Repatterning, developed by John Beaulieu, N.D., Ph.D., is a natural method of healing using Tuning Forks based on the sonic ratios inherent in nature. When we tap the Tuning Forks, we produce pure musical intervals based on precise mathematical proportions known as the Pythagorean tunings.

When we listen to these intervals we create an archetypal Resonance resulting in a physical and psychic repatterning of our mind, bodies and spirit. This takes place on a physical level within the inner ear by stimulation of the cochlea and semi-circular canals. When we listen to the sound of the Tuning Forks our Nervous system attunes to the pitch in much the same way as when we find a pitch for a choir, or tune a piano.

The vestibular system via the semi-circular canals reproportions our body through a process of cellular memory based on the natural ratios of the Tuning Forks. During the listening process our physical body will actually reposture itself to hold the proportion and sound correctly.

John Beaulieu discovered Biosonic Repatterning while sitting in an anechoic chamber at New York University. An anechoic chamber is a completely soundproof room resembling a sensory deprivation chamber. After reading about the experiences of the composer-philosopher John Cage he decided to experiment.

John Cage found that he had heard two sounds while in the chamber, one was a high-pitched sound and the other a low-pitched sound. The engineer he was working with informed him that the high sound was his Nervous system, and the low sound was his blood circulation. Excited by this discovery John Beaulieu than sat in an anechoic chamber for five hundred hours over a period of two years listening to the sounds of his own body. He began to correlate different states of consciousness with different sounds of his Nervous system.

Being a trained musician he noticed that the high-pitched sounds of his Nervous system consisted of several sounds in different intervals. Then one day he brought two Tuning Forks and tapped them. Immediately, he observed that the sound of his Nervous system realigned to the sound of the Tuning Forks.

To understand this process, think of a time when you were in a quiet place or just before going to sleep. During this time you may have heard a high-pitched sound in your head. This is the sound of your Nervous system. When you are under Stress, this sound gets louder and sometimes can become a ringing in your ears. For most of us this sound is subtle and we only hear it when we Focus on it. Tuning into the sound of your Nervous system is a Meditation.

Find a quiet place, sit or lie down, close your eyes and Focus your awareness on the sounds inside your head. Listen for the high sound. When you listen closely you will discover that sound consists of two distinct pitches. These pitches originate from your left and right brain hemispheres. These pitches change in frequency, volume, and pitch depending on your state of consciousness.

The intervals of the Body Tuners and the Solar Harmonic Spectrum create pure sounds and overtones to help you Relax and center yourself. Each interval relates to a different state of consciousness and body posture.

You can creatively combine your intervals based of the five element theory of Ether, Air, Fire, Water, Earth to create a Sound Healing concert. For example, if you want to be more fiery you could work with intervals of C & E or C & A. If you want to be more watery, you could work with the intervals of C & D or C & B.

The Tuning Forks are tools to help you develop and refine your sonic abilities. Simply tap the Tuning Forks on your knees, bring them to your ears, and listen to the sound. When you tap the two forks together, the sound created is an interval. As you listen to the two different tones your body will naturally adjust itself and come into balance, making the two sounds into one. You can hum and let your voice resonate with the sound of the interval. This humming creates a sonic anchor which helps you recreate the experience of the Tuning Forks without having to use them.

With practice you will be able to sonically “think” an interval and your Nervous system will respond. When this happens your ears rather than your eyes will dominate your perception. Over a period of time you will naturally begin “seeing” and feeling intervals everywhere in your life. You will be able to know through visual harmonic perception what interval a person is tuned into. Then through bodywork, Tuning Forks or other modalities you can help a person align themselves to intervals for healing and well being. When they are repatterned to the interval you will feel a Resonance in your body similar to that of humming with the Tuning Forks.
