Adult ADHD Symptoms and Treatments

ADHD, a condition long associated with children, is also known to affect adults. Experts believe that this condition does not have an onset in adulthood. According to the Harvard Health Letter, it is estimated that about eighty percent of children who are suffering from ADHD will continue to be afflicted with this condition even as adults.

The symptoms of ADHD in adults are similar to those exhibited in children. Impulsivity, hyperactivity and inattentiveness are the three main characteristics of ADHD that are exhibited in adults as well. However, in adults, these characteristics are manifested in a different form that can range from problem with time management, planning for future, and persistence to achieve a goal. These adults get bored with repetitive tasks and generally procrastinate a lot. Experts believe that with increase in maturity levels that comes with age, the hyperactive behavior reduces.

Essential fatty acids and attention deficit disorder

Given that child ADD has become a major concern for the country over the past decade, there are many child ADHD treatments that are being explored. There is a certain group of experts that believe that a fruitful ADD treatment can be created by managing diet. And among this set of people, there is a belief that deficiencies in essential fatty acids and amino acids may contribute to attention deficit disorder.

Much research has been done to prove that one of the recurring the difference between children with ADD symptoms and those without is the difference in the levels of essential fatty acids. The first such connection was made in 1981 when researchers examined essential fatty acid levels in children with behavioral problems and found them to be less than required. Purdue University researchers have boys with levels of Omega-3 in their blood have a higher frequency of attention deficit disorder.

A study conducted by Oxford University showed that the symptoms of ADD children improved significantly after their diet was supplemented with essential fatty acids as compared to the control group.

Fatty acids play a key role in making brain and nerve tissues and are crucial during the growth phases of the child. They aid proper mental growth and also strengthen the immune system.

Taking vitamins for ADD

The role of vitamins cannot be denied in the proper growth and development of children. We all study the issues and problems that specific vitamin deficiency can cause and probably have learnt that vitamin A is good for the eyes, deficiency in vitamin C causes scurvy and deficiency in vitamin B causes beriberi. But not many of us know that a vitamin deficiency can cause many other issues as well.

There are some studies that show that adequate amounts of vitamin B6 or pyridoxine are required to allow for normal brain development in children. Vitamin B ensures that brain chemicals like serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine are synthesized so that normal development of the brain can occur. A study proved that pyridoxine is more helpful than the most common stimulant that is used for brain disorders in certain cases. However, the issue is that these results were no significant and have not been replicated enough for it to be considered standard ADD treatment.

What Is Adult ADD?

Adult attention deficit disorder, known generally as ADD is a neurobiological condition that may be genetically transmitted or caused by external factors. The condition is marked by symptoms such as procrastination, difficulty in getting work completed, and problems with organizing work.

Howsoever mundane these symptoms of adult attention deficit disorder may appear to be, the persistent presence of these tantamount to ruining an individuals life unless he/she learns to manage and live with it, with or without adult ADD medication.

The level of occurrence of ADD in adults is unknown, but medical studies in transmission and control of diseases show that the symptoms of inattention, procrastination and organization exist in nearly 2-4% of adults.

Diagnosing ADD in adults becomes more difficult in cases where individuals do not report their symptoms themselves. Difficulties to complete even simple tasks and managing their lives become more noticeable and the inattentive trait of ADD patients usually takes a back seat. Moreover, symptoms of adult attention deficit disorder vary among individuals, through lifetime and are impacted by life experiences.

ADHD Non-Medical Treatment

ADHD is a condition that affects children and adults alike but it has been extensively studied only among children. Many types of ADHD treatments have been developed over time and they include drugs, behavior therapy, natural medicines for ADHD and also natural remedies for ADHD. It has been clinically proven that a combination of drugs and behavior therapy is the most effective solution to manage this condition. But, there are many other non medical treatments also that have been developed over time and have gained acceptance among the population.

Behavioral therapy, that includes behavior modification techniques, has been extensively studied and has been shown to be the best option for managing ADHD when used in combination with drugs. It uses the concept of rewards (what a person likes) and punishments (what a person dislikes) and by providing or removing these rewards and punishments, it is possible to successfully control the behavior of the ADHD person. It is important to note that the specific module that is used for different people will vary depending on what the individual likes and dislikes are.

Adult ADD and Anxiety: The Other Side of ADD

Most people with ADD suffer from anxiety too. In theory, if symptoms of adult attention deficit disorder are caused by anxiety, it need not be stipulated that the condition be classified as ADD. Actually there has not been enough research on ruling out anxiety.

Imagination plays havoc with a persons brain, it is better to check out the facts rather than let your imagination run wild and lead yourself to anxiety. Better ways of getting over anxiety is by praying, meditating, humor, sharing worries with friends rather than rushing to medication.

If anxiety has been caused by some real world situation it is better to make corrections in that situation rather than giving in to the perception that it is caused by ADD and look for easy medication solutions. Anxiety is also caused by medical conditions like, reactive hypoglycemia when the sugar level in the body falls. Such conditions warrant a change in diet rather than adult ADD medication.

It is very important to keep in mind that although anxiety and ADD run side by side, it needs to be determined whether symptoms of adult attention deficit disorder have been caused by anxiety or the other way around.

A Case for and against Natural Remedies for Adult ADD

There are myriads of testimonials available on the Internet as well as in print about the efficacy of natural remedies on practically all diseases and ADD is no exception. Indisputably, the base elements of almost all the drugs are from natural resources. Whereas Homoeopathy too forms a part of natural remedies available to cure symptoms of adult attention deficit disorder, the purpose of this article is to focus only on herbal and natural remedies as part of the adult ADD medication regime.

Herbal remedies are based on the belief that the causes behind symptoms of adult attention deficit disorder are diet, allergies, food intolerances, low muscle tone, anxiety, depression, family problems, poor discipline and at times other forms of illness.

What is ADD after all? Apart from the hyperactive behavioral symptoms, ADD is characterized by symptoms that hamper the ability of a person to concentrate and focus on daily routine tasks. The experts of herbal remedies contend that the psycho-stimulant drugs prescribed by the conventional system of treating ADD are harmful and addictive. Doctors and psychiatrics are known for prescribing drugs like Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall that expose ADD patients to risks of addiction and harmful side effects.

Adult ADD Drugs

Adult ADD drugs for treating symptoms of adult attention deficit disorder can prove to be very effective if medication is prescribed in the correct context. However, patients tend to rely more on over the counter medication that can prove to be ineffective and even harmful in many cases.

If adult ADD medication has been prescribed, it is all the more important to follow the instructions of the physician to the last word as even small changes in dosage and the period for which it should be administered can make a vast difference.

Adult ADD drugs need to be administered only after proper analyses of the patient, as adults are likely to be on drugs for other ailments too. Such drugs often result in side effects that duplicate the symptoms of adult attention deficit disorder and can lead to confusion and even worsen the condition.

Prescribing adult ADD medication requires proper communication between the patient and the doctor. The doctor, on seeing a poor response of the patient to the medicine prescribed initially, will work with the patient to find another drug or a combination of drugs to control symptoms. Most of these drugs, however, require closer monitoring during the preliminary phase of the treatment.

Adult Attention Deficit Disorder Treatment

The inattentive type of adult attention disorder is the second most common amongst the six commonly known types of ADD. The irony is that these symptoms of adult attention deficit disorder often go unnoticed and are the most difficult to diagnose. We often refuse to associate symptoms like difficulty with time or money management, organization, or communication skills with ADD and tend to, either consciously or inadvertently, avoid or delay adult ADD medication.

Moreover, in some ADD patients, positive traits like creativity, liveliness, flexibility, hyper focus, and intelligence are so accentuated that association of the symptoms with ADD becomes all the more difficult.

Whatever the claims of the manufacturers selling prescription or over the counter drugs, ADD does not have a cure and one has to live with it for a lifetime. The drugs that are used to treat ADD carry warnings of side effects of these drugs that range from liver disorder to suicidal tendencies.

The aspect of the treatment of the symptoms of adult attention deficit disorder which is often underplayed is that adults who recognize that the challenges they face are related to ADD can learn to manage their lives with the aid coaching, professional organizing and other resources. It is only after this option has been tried that the aid of adult ADD medication should be sought.
