Home Remedies for Arthritis Pain Relief

December 22nd, 2006

Remedy 1 - Stretch Gently for Strength and Mobility.

When it comes to Arthritis, moving hurts, but not moving destroys. Incorrect moving harms, but intelligent moving heals.

Yoga teaches movement with proper joint alignment which helps bring deformed joints back to normal position as appropriate muscles are lengthened and strengthened. Consider a private session with an Experienced teacher or buying a book to leam the correct poses. But remember, Smart Yoga Exercise is the key to restoring health to arthritic joints. Work within the limits imposed by the disease, but dont let yourself be immobilized by it.

Remedy 2 - Find Relief Through Less Stress.

If you are hurting and you tense up, you hurt more. People who have things in their lives under control will be better pain managers than people who dont. Recent research confirms the importance of psychological attitude on Arthritis pain relief.

People with Arthritis need to learn how to pace themselves and not try to do everything they can possibly do on the days when theyre feeling good. All that does is make you tired and sore the next day. Try to do a little each day, whether you are having a flare-up or not.

Learn to relax. Take a lesson from natural Childbirth. Childbirth is very painful, but women learn how to deal with that pain by learning how to relax. Books and audiotapes teaching relaxation techniques are available at many bookstores. Idle joints can become painful joints. If you focus on pain, it hurts more, but if you get busy doing other things that are important to you, youre not going to feel it.

Remedy 3 - Try Night Prevention for Morning Stiffness.

Almost 90 per cent of the patients suffer from some type of Morning Stiffness. Apply a muscle ointment at night before going to bed. It will relaxe you and gives you a psychological boost as well. The reason? People with Arthritis tend to feel much better all day if they arent stiff when they wake up in the morning.

Remedy 4 - Float The Pain Away.

Studies have shown that floating in specially designed floatation tanks, also known as isolation or sensory deprivation tanks, can relieve arthritic pain. You usually spend about an hour in the tank.

The pain relief is produced by stress reduction. The body is relaxing, the muscles are relaxing, and this seems to stimulate a release of endorphins, the bodys natural painkillers. Water in the tanks is heated to precisely 93.5F, the same temperature as the skin, and the surrounding air is warm and tranquil, leading to deep relaxation.

Remedy 5 - Mix Oil and Water.

Recommendation: Heat and Eucalyptus ointment, in the form of a thick, oil-based product called Eucalypta-Mint, work for both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid Arthritis. Use that in conjunction with moist heat when feeling stiff or having pain. Simply rub it on and wrap the joint in plastic wrap. The moist heat can be applied with warm Towels, or you can soak your hands or feet in warm water.

Remedy 6 - Copper Bracelet.

Sometimes longevity confers respect along with age. Artifacts that were rarely noticed in their day take on new meaning and value as they persist throughout time. Such is the case with the copper bracelet, which for decades has been worn for Arthritis relief and remains popular today.

Studies have shown that some people with Arthritis seem to have difficulty metabolizing copper from the food they eat, leading to increased pain. The dissolved copper from bracelet bypasses the oral route by entering the body through the skin. This might be the only way arthritics ever receive the copper their bodies need -copper that studies have shown can indeed relieve pain. Physicians remain somewhat skeptical about bracelets but dont entirely dismiss them, either.

Copper may have a role. Its possible that a copper deficiency does increase joint inflammation, and it doesnt seem that supplementing copper in the diet has the same effect as wearing it.

Remedy 7 - Work Wonders with Water Excercise.

Ask a dozen doctors about the merits of any Arthritis treatment and youll get a dozen different opinions. But ask them about exercising in water and they all seem to agree. Water exercises are excellent. Your pain will be significantly reduced in the water, and you become much more flexible in water than you are in air.

The beginning exercise techniques are easy for anyone to follow. They consist of waving, walking, and bending motions performed in chest-deep water. The more advanced movements look like aquatic dance steps designed to take advantage of waters natural resistance and gentle buoyancy.

Remedy 8 - Get Your Spouse Involved.

Though its only natural for a husband or wife to do whatevers possible to help a mate whos hurting, such help can often do more harm than good. When a wife tries to do everything herself and is constantly asking her husband how he feels, she is reinforcing his pain.

Advice: Dont be attentive and supportive only when your spouse is in pain, but also when he or she is feeling good and being active. Thats the time to say, Im really happy to see you doing things. Praise is really important and something people tend to forget to do.

Remedy 9 - Use Ice to Prevent Pain.

Recommend cold treatments for those times when a joints been stressed from overuse or overwork. Use a gel pack but ice in a plastic bag or a bag of frozen peas will do just as well. Apply for 15 to 20 minutes, then remove for 10 to 15 minutes. That can be repeated for hours at a time if needed.

Remedy 10 - Fast on with Carrot Juice.

A vegetable-juice fast significantly reduces pain for many patients with rheumatoid Arthritis. Carrot juice, Celery juice, cabbage juice, or tomato juice can be used.

Fast on nothing but the vegetable juice for one day during the first week to get started. Follow that by alternate fasting for two days during the next week (i.e., Monday and Wednesday) and three days during the third week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday). Dont attempt any type of fasting without your doctors supervision, however.

Testimonial: I have had very bad knees with calcium deposits under the kneecap since I was a kid. There’s times they ache so bad that I feel like I should be on a walker at the ripe old age of 41. The Joint Dr and Pain Away blends, both applying them directly on my knees and with soaking in a hot bath with one of the blends in the water, has helped me tremendously. I’ve used one or both almost daily and I still have well over half a bottle of each and it’s been 5 months. When my 14-year-old son developed Tennis Elbow from pitching baseball (yes, baseball!), I began using it on him before and after practices and games and it’s also helped him a lot. 2) If you are Pregnant or nursing, do not utilize natural therapies without the express consent and guidance of your doctor.

3) Keep in mind that many oils are phototoxic - meaning they will increase your sensitivity to the sun. Avoid sun exposure for at least 4 hours after topical use of Essential Oils.

4) Do a patch test. Always patch test a new oil or blend on a small area of skin to test for sensitivity. The last thing you want is a huge rash because you didn’t know you’d be sensitive to the oil!

5) Natural Remedies work well with traditional medicine - the key word being ‘with’. If you have any medical conditions, are under a doctor’s care for ANY reason, or simply have questions/concerns - talk to your medical professional BEFORE you begin a natural therapy regimen.

Oil Measurements: 10 ml = approx. 1/3 oz. A 10 ml bottle of our blends holds approximately 325-350 drops. The average dosage varies from 1-6 drops

Remember - Natural does not necessarily mean ’safe’!

Natural Treatments for Bursitis

November 14th, 2006

Bursitis is an inflammation of a bursa, a small structure inside every joint that helps to lubricate and cushion it. Usually bursitis occurs in the larger joints, such as the shoulder, hip, knee, or elbow. It can happen once or can recur over time. Without seeing your health care provider, you usually can’t easily tell the difference between bursitis and pain caused by a strain or Arthritis.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Pain in the joint that gets worse when you move the joint (the pain may come all at once or develop gradually over time)
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Fever and warm joint area (if an infection is present)

Nutrition

Include in your diet anti-inflammatory oils such as those found in cold-water fish, nuts, and seeds. The following Supplements may help.

  • Glucosamine Sulfate (500 mg two or three times a day), for connective tissue support
  • Omega-3 oils (1,000 mg two or three times a day), such as Flaxseed oil, as an anti-inflammatory agent
  • Vitamin C with flavonoids (250 to 500 mg two times a day), for connective tissue repair
  • Proteolytic enzymes such as bromelain (250 mg twice a day), to reduce inflammation
  • Flavonoids and oral digestive enzymes for inflammation

Herbs

Herbs are generally a safe way to strengthen and tone the body’s systems. As with any therapy, it is important to work with your provider on getting your problem diagnosed before you start any treatment. Herbs may be used as dried extracts (capsules, powders, Teas), glycerites (glycerine extracts), or tinctures (alcohol extracts). Unless otherwise indicated, Teas should be made with 1 tsp. herb per cup of hot water. Steep covered 5 to 10 minutes for leaf or flowers, and 10 to 20 minutes for roots. Drink 2 to 4 cups per day. Tinctures may be used alone or in combination as noted.

  • Herbs that reduce swelling include meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria), White Willow (Salix alba), Jamaica dogwood (Piscidia piscipula), and turmeric (Curcuma longa). A tincture of one, or a combination of these, may be taken at 15 drops every 15 minutes up to four doses for acute pain relief, or 30 drops four times per day for general pain relief. Turmeric increases the effects of bromelain.

  • For bursitis with muscle spasm, add Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) .

  • For chronic bursitis, add hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna).

Homeopathy

Some of the most common remedies are listed below. Usually, the dose is 3 to 5 pellets of a 12X to 30C remedy every one to four hours.

  • Arnica gel applied topically (to the skin) as directed gives excellent short-term pain relief.
  • Arnica for bursitis occuring after an injury to the joint
  • Ruta graveolons for rheumatic pains in the joint
  • Bellis perennis for injury with a great deal of Bruising
  • Rhus toxicodendron for pain that gets better with movement
  • “Traumeel” injections as an alternative to corticosteroids

Natural Home Remedies for Gout

August 24th, 2006

Causes and Symptoms:

Gout is a disease of the joints and is a form of Rheumatism. It is a constitutional disorder connected with excess of uric acid in the blood manifesting itself by inflammation of joints with deposition of urate of soda and also by morbid changes in various important organs.

Hippo crates in his Aphorisms speaks of gout as occurring most commonly in spring and autumn, and mentions the facts that women are less liable to it than men. Why the uric acid is found in excess is not understood by the allopathic physicians. Uric acid is formed in the system in the process of nutrition and is excreted by the Kidneys. In a patient suffering from gout, the quantity of uric acid is found to be much more than normal. In a paroxysm of gout, the body appears to get rid of a lot of uric acid and there appears to be some relied but that is purely temporary.

Modern medicine believes gout to be hereditary since it has been found in 50 to 80 percent of the cases that the patients parents or grand parents suffered from the disease. The disease affects the sedentary persons more than those who lead active lives, but it is not always true. On the other hand, inadequate exercise, a luxurious manner of living, habitual over-indulgence in rich foods and especially in alcohol is the precipitating factors in the onset of the disease. Some teetotalers and vegetarians are also found to be victims of gout.

The disease is more common in mature age and in the males than females. Persons exposed to the influence of lead poisoning such as plumbers, are apt to suffer from gout. Attacks of the disease are readily excited by exposure to cold, disorders of Indigestion, fatigue and injuries to particular joints.

An attack of gout may appear without warning, or there may be premonitory symptoms. Among the most common of these are disorders of the digestive organs, with a feeble and capricious appetite, Flatulence, uneasiness in the right side in the region of the liver, and irritation in the urinary organs. There is also irritability, numbness and coldness in the limbs. The attack comes usually at night, usually between two and three in the morning.

The affected part is found to be swollen and a deep red hue. The skin is tense and glistening and the surrounding veins are more or less distended. The attack lasts for a week or ten days during which the patient suffers from Constipation, dyspepsia and extreme thirst. The urine is scanty and high coloured with a copious deposit, consisting chiefly of urates.

The joint affected may become swollen but if the disease is not attended to, the swelling spreads to other joints and it becomes chronic. Joints also become enlarged and refuse to function without giving excruciating pain to the sufferer.

Naturopathy believes that like all other diseases, gout is the result of inadequate excretion of the morbid and poisonous matter from the orifices of the body. The bowels, the urinary tract, the skin and the nostrils—all must expel the waste matter from the body. If they become slack and do not function properly, those substances accumulate in the body and produce gout.

Life depends on healthy blood and nature has devised Catarrh, diahrroea and fevers to force the human system to expel the accumulated waste matter. If these diseases are suppressed, as happens in most case when the patient takes to allopathic treatment, the poisonous and morbid matter attacks the part of the body, which is weaker than others. That is how chronic diseases are born.

The real culprit is the type of food, which we are addicted to. Our blood is chiefly alkaline and anything that tends to produce acidity should be avoided. Treating gout in any other system is chaotic. The real cause of the disease is not attack and recourse is taken to painkillers or antidoting of the poison is under taken.

The Ayurvedic practitioners prohibit the intake of fruits and vegetables on the plea that they may produce cold, which is supposed to be bad for the gout and thus deprive the patient of the real cure. Doctors have some times advised patients to have their teeth or tonsils extracted under the misconception that the seat of the disease lays there. But even the excision of these has never led to any relief to the gout patients.

Treatment:

To real treatment of gout starts with ensuring that all the orifices of the body, which expel waste and morbid matter, are activated to do their work properly. The patient should breathe fresh air, so that oxygen is available to him in larger quantities cleansing his blood of poisonous humours. The gout patient must increase his intake of water to produce more urine. He should take lukewarm water in the morning and evening mixed with the juice of mine.

The pores of the skin should be activated by a cold bath every day and drying of the body with vigorous rubbing with the palms of the hand. If the pain in the joints is too severe and the patient is unable to massage his body himself, he should seek somebody elses help. Sun bathing should be undertaken to produce Sweat. The head may be covered with a wet towel to save it from excessive heat of the sun. Spending half an hour in the sun will activate the Sweat glands.

A cold bath is recommended after a sunbath; if the patient does not feel equal to it, he would be better advised to wipe his body with a wet towel. Sun bathing should be done no more than thrice in a week. If there is no sun, Sweat should be induced by a steam bath or by merely soaking ones feet in hot water.

The food should consist of fresh fruits and vegetables-substances, which do not stick to the intestines. Fruits, which can be taken without peeling, should be taken. In the beginning of the treatment, the best course would be to live on fruit juices.

That would give some rest to the intestines. Fruits recommended are: oranges, grape fruit, pineapple, raspberry and pear. Vegetables like the various gourds, cabbage, tomatoes and greens are the best. The more chronic the disease, the greater should be the period for which the patient should live on fruits and vegetables.

After a five-day period during which only fruits and vegetables are taken, milk should be added to the diet. It should preferably be boiled and taken in quantities of 250 to 500 millilitres at one time. Bread should be taken only after a fortnight of living on fruits and vegetables. Potatoes can replace bread with advantages as they contain more alkaline matter.

Hot fomentation should be undertaken to reduce the pain in the joints. About 75 grammes of salt should be added to one litre of hot water for fomentation. The site of fomentation should be washed with cold water later on. Those who suffer from a constant pain should apply a paste of raw potatoes ground fine on the affected joints. The paste should be allowed to remain for some hours.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate For Improving Bone Health

June 17th, 2006

Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate

Many people use the Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate supplement in order to improve their osteoarthritis condition. Osteoarthritis is a disease in which the cartilage wears out due to the rubbing of exposed bones, which makes the joints sore. To provide relief from it people undertake drug therapy, but medicines also have side effects.

Moreover such medication has not been proven to stop the progression of this disease. Recent studies show that millions of Americans are suffering from this disease and to stay away from major side effects, many of them try new dietary supplementation and opt to supplement with Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate.

What are Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate?

Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate are naturally found substances within the human body. Chondroitin Sulfate is a part of larger protein molecules known as proteoglycan. This protein helps in cartilage elasticity. Glucosamine is present in the form of an amino sugar. Medical science believes that it plays some role in the formation and damage repair of the cartilages.

How the Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate Supplement is Produced

Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate supplement is available as a dietary supplement. It is produced by extracting these elements from animal tissue. Chondroitin is extracted from the cartilage of animals and Glucosamine is extracted from the tissue of animals, such as lobster, crabs, etc.

How do they work?

Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate may act as a pain relief supplement but there has not been any intensive research that reveals reduction in cartilage damage.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate have both shown some pain relief of mild osteoarthritis, just like pain relief by aspirin or ibuprofen. People usually take them because they have little to no side effects and because of the possibilities of it slowing down cartilage damage.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate Usage

In general, the Chondroitin Sulfate is taken up to 1,200 milligram each day where as Glucosamine is taken up to 1,500 milligram each day. Time duration for its usage ranges from 6 to 8 weeks.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate Side Effects

The side effects of Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate supplement may include softened stool and intestinal gas.

It is usually recommended that Pregnant women and children not take Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate. People with Diabetes should check their blood sugar level before they take this supplement. Bleeding may occur if used with a blood thinning medicine such as aspirin.

What do I look for?

Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate are available as dietary Supplements, which mean that they are unregulated and the amount of these may vary.

RealHeal - Aromatherapy For Muscle Pain, Aches and Bruising

May 6th, 2006

The healing process explained

Healing is about more than cure. While it is important for tissue to heal, for bones to knit and for regeneration to take place, healing also occurs on a deep emotional level. In order to heal, we also need to be nurtured, to feel safe and loved and to be cared for. We need to put aside our worries and stresses and focus inward in order to harness the natural ability of the body to heal itself. The best healers are those who are able to nurture their own spirit and release the healing process from inside.

How can Natural Remedies help?

Natural Remedies have a big role to play in healing after injury of any kind. Herbal medicines have been used for centuries to help repair broken bones, torn and sprained muscles, internal and external Bruising and injuries of all types.

Ongoing pain and stiffness due to conditions like Arthritis, Rheumatism and sports injuries respond well to natural intervention without the side effects commonly associated with the prescription drugs.

Aromatherapy is a holistic form of treatment which uses concentrated extractions from a wide range of plants in order to effect and assist with healing. Therapeutic massage using carefully selected aromatherapy oils brings the important soothing element of touch to the healing process.

Not only does this help us to feel good, but it also helps to release endorphins and other pain relieving chemicals in our body, thereby bringing relief. Massage also promotes the flow of oxygen rich blood to the affected areas, thereby speeding up the healing process. In addition, the therapeutic aromas enter the system via the sense of smell and stimulate areas of the brain, assisting with relaxation and pain relief and facilitating the healing process.

Along with massage, one can therefore burn the oils in a special Oil Burner for further benefit. The area of the brain which interprets smell is very close to the area that processes emotions. Aromatherapeutic oils therefore work very effectively on the emotional level - a crucial factor in any healing process.

I will always keep some of this product on hand!” Brent P.

How do I use RealHeal Massage Oil?

With aromatherapy, a little goes a long way! RealHeal Massage Oil may be self applied or (even better) massaged on by someone else.

Pour a little into the palm of the hand and rub together to warm the oil. For postoperative and postnatal use, or for use on Bruises, massage should be gentle and applied slowly with the palm of the flat hand. For Arthritis, rheumatic conditions or muscular aches and pains, some pressure may be applied in order to reach deep into the muscle fiber. At no point should pressure be strong enough to inflict any pain and it is important that this be a relaxing and positive experience.

Use twice daily or more often if required.

Caution: May be used from the age of 3 years. However, safety during Pregnancy and Breastfeeding has not been established. Contains groundnut oils and is therefore not recommended for people with nut Allergies. RealHeal Massage Oil should not be used on open wounds or cuts.

Note: For even better results, use with RealHeal Tablets or JointEase Plus.

How long till I see results?

Immediate relief is usually obtained during massage. With frequent use, healing should be greatly facilitated.

For those treating Arthritis and rheumatic conditions, regular use should help to minimize reliance on pain and anti-inflammatory medication as well as reduce the frequency, duration and severity of pain.

How long does one bottle last?

One bottle of RealHeal Massage Oil should last approximately 3 weeks, depending on frequency of use.
