Sciatica and Piriformis Muscle Syndrome

March 27th, 2007

Back pain has the potential of hampering your daily work schedule. Most likely it will restrict your mobility and may not let you go about your daily household chores. A proper diagnosis is a must for any effective back care treatment because if it turns out to be case of sciatic pain it will require a specific direction in the treatment that you are administered.

The Sciatic Nerve is located in front of the piriformis muscle in the buttocks region, including the lowest two nerves that exit from the lower spine (L4 and L5) and the first three sacral nerves (S1, S2 and S3). Both the nerves branch out on each side of the spine. The root of each nerve exits the spine between two vertebra in the lower back, travels down the back of each leg, and branches out to the leg and into each foot. Sciatic pain that radiates along this nerve can be harrowing and in many patients, impairs strength and vitality.

Sciatic pain is caused due to various conditions that adversely affect the Sciatic Nerve, the longest nerve in the body. It can be affected by a number of physical contortions that take place in the vertebras and in singular cases of a tumor and infection. One of the conditions, sometimes called pseudo-Sciatica that is often confused with Sciatica is the piriformis syndrome. This produces symptoms similar to Sciatica. But the pilformis muscle related pain is actually caused by compression of the peripheral sections of the nerve, usually from the Tension in the soft tissue in the piriformis or related muscles. Sciatic Nerve treatment falls in an entirely different segment than other conditions that arouse pain. The type of treatment that will be prescribed depends on which condition has caused the Sciatic Nerve to be compressed.

Piriformis syndrome is indicated in a situation where piriformis muscle shortens or spasms due to a trauma and strangles the Sciatic Nerve under it. The pain arising from this is similar to Sciatica - a tingling and numbness than often runs from the low back to the rear, down the leg and to the foot. A correct identification of the cause of the pain is important to enable the most effective Sciatic Nerve treatment and to avoid complicating the condition by a misdirected treatment.

The approach of all Sciatic Nerve treatments is to reduce compression that has arisen. In cases where Sciatica is piriformis related, muscle stretching exercises, massage, and mobilization techniques form an integral part of Sciatica Alternative Remedies. The general aim of such therapies is to lessen pain and minimize infection by loosening the tense muscles. In many cases a wedgie proves to be quite helpful in achieving the goal of easing pain arising from this strangulation of the Sciatic Nerve by the piriformis muscle.

The Truth Behind Symptoms of Sciatica

March 24th, 2007

The Sciatic Nerve is the largest nerve in the human body and it connects the spinal cord with the muscles of the legs and feet. It runs from each side of the lower spine through the thighs down to the foot.

There are a lot of myths associated with the word Sciatica. For example, Sciatica is normally understood to be a diagnosis but actually it is by itself a symptom. Literally speaking, the term Sciatica means a pain in the low back, on one side of the rear and/or down the back of the leg caused by a compression of the Sciatica nerve. Whatever causes that compression is the actual diagnosis.

The focus of Sciatic Nerve treatment thus, would be what is causing the nerve compression and the sciatic pain. Normally this compression is due to another spinal structure and occurs mostly in L5 or S1 level of the spinal cord. There are a few low back problems that can irritate the Sciatica nerve causing acute pain which is unbearable a t times.

  • Lumbar disc herniation - rupture in smooth muscle tissue through which the bodily structure of the inner core of a spinal disc in the low back protrudes and pressurizes on a nerve root; also called a Pinched Nerve, slipped disc, bulging disc or protruding disc

  • Lumbar degenerative disc disease - marked gradual deterioration of organs and cells along with loss of function in the low back allow excess motion in the spine and cause irritation of the nerve roots

  • Isthmic spondylolisthesis - forward dislocation of one vertebra over the one beneath it producing pressure on spinal nerves

  • Lumbar spinal stenosis - abnormal narrowing of the spinal canal in the low back pinches nerve roots, sometimes as the result of a bone spur

  • Lumbar subluxation – partial displacement of the vertebra in the low back resulting in its functional loss

Other causes that may necessitate conventional Sciatic Nerve treatment or Sciatica Alternative Remedies include a spinal tumor or infection.

Sciatica pain can occur in any place from low back to the toes. The severity of the pain varies from a tingling sensation or a burning or prickly sensation to severe and debilitating. Although, in some cases, Sciatica pain disappears within a few weeks there is no set rule and can worsen with time which can result in a prolonged treatment. Contrary to the common belief Sciatica is a set of symptoms for what is causing the pain. In cases of severe low back and leg pain, the cause needs to be correctly determined in order to relieve discomfort.

Ease Stress and Muscle Pain

March 17th, 2007

Try the following combination of Essential Oils in a warm (not hot) bath to ease stress and muscle pain:

Use only Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils.

Draw the bath first, add the Essential Oils, swirl them around with your foot, get in and relax. Allow yourself 10 to 20 minutes. Do not get the bath water in your eyes, as the oils will sting. Use this formula up to once a day for 3 days a week over a two to three week period.

You can also use this recipe to create a massage blend.

In one tablespoon of Carrier Oil (like Sweet Almond or our Massage Base), add the above oils. (If making an ounce, then multiply drops by 2)

Muscle Relaxing Bath

March 17th, 2007

As you prepare your bath, close the window and door to prevent the oil vapors from escaping. Fill the bathtub with warm/hot water. To soften your skin and remove impurities, dissolve 1 cup of Epsom salt in the bath water. Then pour the Essential Oil blend into the water. Swirl the water to disperse the oil evenly. Enter the bath immediately, since Essential Oils evaporate quickly. Relax and enjoy the bath for at least 30 minutes.

Heavy Duty Backache Oil

March 17th, 2007

Cover the Herbs with olive or Sunflower oil and heat at a low temperature for several hours. (See my Directions for making salves for complete details on making herbal oils. ) Strain and add the Essential Oils. Apply the oil generously to your sore back and aching muscles.

Another fun thing to do is to gather as many of the Herbs fresh from your garden that are available and throw them in the pot.

Exercises for Relieving Sciatica

March 9th, 2007

There are a number of different conditions that can cause Sciatica pain, which by itself is a general term indicating pain caused by compression or irritation of one or more nerves that exit from lower spine and extend up to the feet.

Some episodes of sciatic pain subside on their own within a couple of weeks but quick recourse to Sciatic Nerve treatment is highly recommended to obtain fast relief and to avoid future complications.

Spine specialists who specialize in Sciatic Nerve treatment often recommend exercises as part of the regular treatment to alleviate pain. It is essential to get a proper diagnosis done, because, however rare it may be, Sciatica pain can be caused by serious conditions like tumor or infection which require immediate medical attention.

Specific exercises for pain relief and to reduce frequent reoccurrences have given very good results in the past. As part of Sciatica Alternative Remedies, these exercises are much better than bed rest. Resting and the resultant inactivity weaken back muscles, which lead to back injury and strain as the back muscles and spinal structures are increasingly less able to support the back.

Sciatica exercises concentrate on strengthening the abdominal and back muscles to provide relief and prove helpful in preventing future episodes too. By increasing awareness of the position of the spine, sciatic exercises attempt to motivate patients to

  1. Assume the most comfortable stance
  2. Train the lumbar spine to remain stable when flexed
  3. Indulge in stretching of the hamstring and piriformis muscle to prevent tightening of the lower back and Tension from hip to foot
  4. Restore the range of motion in sacroiliac joint which can be limited if the joint is inflamed

Sciatic exercises are designed differently for each condition so as to effectively address the different causes of sciatic pain, such as a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, isthmic spondylolisthesis, piriformis syndrome, and sacroiliac joint dysfunction. For example, herniated discs require extension exercises that arch the spine backward rather than flex it forward. Similarly, abdominal strengthening exercises which perk up overall posture give better relief to patients suffering from spinal stenosis.

To get the maximum benefit, sciatic exercises must be done correctly and regularly, preferably twice a day. Close attention to the directions regarding posture and body mechanisms is necessary. In fact, it is highly advisable to seek advice from a physical therapist before starting and this should be followed up with regular consultations.

Sciatica management should actually become a part of your daily living. Along with exercises patients are advised to make changes in their daily lifestyle in order to reduce stress on the lower back. These changes could include using good ergonomics while lifting, maintaining proper postures, ensuring support to lower back while sitting and refraining from standing for long periods. In case sciatic exercises are continued even after relief from the current flare up, they minimize the risk of reoccurrence of fresh episodes.

Bone-Protec - Healthy Bones Naturally

March 4th, 2007

Xtend-Life Bone-Protec contains key active ingredients, essential Vitamins and Minerals and other co-factors to help protect and benefit your skeletal system, for improved posture, mobility, strength, reduced pain, and reduced risk of degenerative disease.

Xtend-Life has sourced the best quality ingredients to create the best synergistic solution…

  • Okinawan Coral Calcium has been harvested in an environmentally friendly manner only from extinct coral reefs above sea level;
  • Mangosteen is a powerful Antioxidant/anti-inflammatory phytonutrient containing Xanthones. (Xanthones are naturally stable molecules proven to be powerful weapons in fighting disease and promoting a healthy body);
  • Vitamin K2 is the most concentrated (and expensive) form of Vitamin K to help promote bone health. Unlike Vitamin K1 or K3 (which focus in the liver) Vitamin K2 works directly in the bone and blood vessels to help regulate bone calcium;

Plus, other specific Vitamins, Minerals and co-factors, including Piperine, to increase bioavailability, help with absorption and transportation, and increase ingredient activity to provide Total Balance.

Bone-Protec contains ingredients that aim to:

  • Increase/maintain Bone Mass Density
  • Reduce fracture and osteoporosis risks, and
  • Increase bone strength.

Together with a good diet and moderate weight-bearing exercise, Bone-Protec may provide the powerful Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action you need to reduce pain and degeneration.

If you are at risk of osteoporosis, or other bone deficiencies, suffer from skeletal aches, pains or wish better bone strength and mobility, Bone-Protec may help you.

Bone-Protec can be combined with other Xtend-Life products for complete overall general health and essential organ care. For further information on this product please use the links at the top of this page, or contact us for further help and advice regarding this, or any other Xtend-Life product.

Benefits of Bone-Protec

Xtend-Life Bone-Protec is a highly advanced formula containing 12 specific vitamin, mineral, elemental and active ingredient compounds to help strengthen and protect your skeletal system.

Just some of the many benefits include…

A pure sourced, environmentally-friendly Okinawan Coral Calcium.

Essential Vitamins and Minerals specifically chosen for their bone health properties;

Vitamin K2, the most potent and natural form of Vitamin K with preventative properties against risk of fractures and other bone injury; and

Specific combinations of Magnesium, Vitamin C, D3, Boron, Piperine, Lycopene, Strontium, and Mangosteen, containing powerful Xanthone Antioxidants… helping to…

  • Increase calcium absorption and transportation in the blood
  • Decrease risk of cartilage damage and fracture
  • Help to prevent osteoporosis
  • Decrease oxidative stress, and
  • Preserve overall bone health.

The Xanthones in Mangosteen have also been shown to inhibit Cox II enzymes (responsible for inflammation, swelling and pain).

Compatibility

The interactions of the specifically chosen ingredients in Bone-Protec have been carefully researched at molecular level to ensure complete compatibility and bioavailability, to make the formula as ‘active’ as possible for optimum results.

Bone-Protec provides overall skeletal nutrition for optimum bone health.

Plus, by enhancing key ingredient activity with powerful phytonutrient action, the Immune System can react better to prevent disease, helping to make Bone-Protec the best skeletal management supplement available.

Value for Money

As a comparison, it is interesting to note that some products containing only Vitamin K2, in the same dosage as the Vitamin K2 in Bone-Protec, actually cost more than our formula, even with all our added nutrients! As an example, a popular K2 supplement sold by Dr Mercola costs US$39.95 which is over a third more than a full bottle of Bone-Protec and yet they both have the same amount of K2!

Facts about Bone-Protec

The unfortunate fact is that most people will suffer from bone density loss as they age. This leads to fractures, hip replacements etc. Very often in elderly people a hip replacement can be a prelude to a premature death, often due to side effects such as pneumonia which can be brought on my the trauma of a broken hip.

The best policy to follow in addition to a balanced diet which will help reduce the leaching of calcium from your bones is to supplement with additional calcium, provided that the supplement has ALL the co-factors needed to ensure maximum absorption. Otherwise the calcium will pass through the body unused.

Frequently Asked Questions about Bone-Protec

Is Bone-Protec safe to use?

Yes. Bone-Protec is made of 100% natural ingredients. It contains no pharmaceuticals and does not therefore require a prescription. Each ingredient has undergone clinical studies to prove their benefit to the human body and ensure their compatibility and abilities.

Are there any discounts for Bulk purchases?

Our policy is to keep our selling price as low as possible to ensure customers get maximum value for money. However, we do offer a genuine customer loyalty program for those customers who order regularly. This program provides product discounts and shipping subsidies.

Can you tell me more about the ingredients in Bone-Protec?

Xtend-Life’s R & D team have spent time researching the ingredients in Bone-Protec, including their individual and compatible clinical trials, to formulate the best possible results. It is important to note that although each ingredient has it’s individual benefits, it is only when formulated together in specific quantities and ratios that it is possible to achieve worthwhile results at an optimal level.

Why do you use Magnesium oxide instead of the more common Magnesium citrate?

The reason for this is that the Coral Calcium that we use is alkaline, whereas the citrate form of Magnesium is acid. Therefore, by using an oxide form of Magnesium we help to prevent any negative interactions between these two Minerals. A small amount of citrate such as Boron citrate is OK.

Are there any side effects associated with taking Bone-Protec?

Our Bone-Protec formula is a complete natural product so the potential for negative side effects is greatly reduced, in most cases eliminated. Some people can still have reactions to particular ingredients however and conflicts with prescription medications can occur.

Can Bone-Protec be taken while Pregnant or nursing?

While Bone-Protec is safe to take in the preconception stage, once you know you are Pregnant it should only be continued on the advice of your physician.

Will Bone-Protec interfere with other prescription medications?

Many chemical and synthetic drugs will interfere with natural ingredients and vice versa. It is always recommended to consult with your physician prior to adding any supplement to your medication regimen. Alternatively, you may email us with regard to any concerns you may have.

I am taking other nutritional Supplements and natural medications. Is this ok?

There is generally no problem with taking additional Supplements or remedies from other suppliers, although it is usually unnecessary as Xtend-Life have put together protocols to cover most peoples’ needs. If you do add other Supplements it is important to remember though that an excess of additional Supplements or some ingredients can potentially be detrimental to your health. Xtend-Life product ranges are designed to be taken in combination without such risks.

What else can I do to help myself?

It is important to ensure a generally healthy lifestyle, which includes exercise and a good dietary regime. Even moderate weight-bearing exercise can help to strengthen your skeletal system, improve overall Circulation and increase your immunity against degenerative disease. A healthy and balanced diet is of course also important.

Can I get ongoing advice and help from Xtend-Life?

Yes. Xtend-Life experts are here to answer any questions you have regarding their products and their uses for your condition. Please contact us anytime for further help.

New Product for Bones Released by Xtend-Life

February 28th, 2007

As many Xtend-Life customers know, we discontinued our Calcium/superphytonutrient product a few months ago because of the difficulty of obtaining some of the raw ingredients to the standards that we require.

When it became apparent that we were going to have a problem we began development on a new replacement product. As with all the products we develop our objective was to develop the most effective product possible and supply it to our customers with the best value for money possible.

The net result is Bone-Protec which contains a synergistic blend of all the active ingredients that promote good bone health. It has a pure Okinawan Coral Calcium, magnesium, but as importantly Boron, vitamin D3 which are the minimum co-factors needed for good bio-availability of calcium.

There are of course many inexpensive products on the market which contain just calcium, magnesium, boron and Vitamin D3…

But, we didn’t stop at this. We wanted to ensure that we had the best product in this field so went a number of steps further. We added:

  • Strontium. Not to be confused with the radioactive type. Strontium is an important part of the diet but is lacking in most people. It is an essential element for building strong bones.

*Lycopene. This carotenoid has also been shown to play an important role in bone health.

*Piperine. This ingredient helps with the bio-availability of the active ingredients.

  • Vitamin K2. This is another substance that has been proven to help in building strong bones particularly when combined as a co-factor of calcium. You may recollect that a reader brought up the question of Vitamin K2 in the blog recently. They were referring to the Vitamin K2 being promoted by Dr Mercola.

He is providing Vitamin K2 for US$39.95. We are providing the same amount in a bottle of Bone-Protec, plus a LOT more, for less.

  • Mangosteen extract. We wanted to include a good powerful phytonutrient in the formula. This was not so much based on science but rather on anecdotal reports of how effective our old formula was which we believe was partly due to the presence of the phytonutrients.

So, we investigated the options for various extracts to include and decided upon Mangosteen. We were going to use Acai extract which is a new Amazonian fruit. We purchased some for testing but had to reject it when we found the micro count on it was high. The factory in Brazil assures us that they are sorting out the problem but in the meantime they were prepared to irradiate the product to get the micro count within specifications.

We were not prepared to accept irradiated ingredients! We will keep an eye on developments over there and we may use Acai at some stage in the future if they can get their powder to a high enough standard.

For now, we believe we have an excellent product for all those people who either have osteoporosis or wish to take preventative measures to ensure that their bones remain strong. If you don’t have any bone problems you may like to do what I am now doing and that is just take a third dose, one capsule a day. Otherwise take the full daily dose of 3 capsules.

It can be taken in conjunction with Total Balance or any other Xtend-Life products.
