We regularly receive queries from customers asking this question. Usually they are prompted to do so as a result of something that they have read on the internet, generally from a Company that is promoting the triglyceride form of fish oil. Much of this material is misinformation.

The following is a typical question from a customer on this issue:

“I just read an article on Nordic Naturals. They say. We use only the natural triglyceride form of fish oil. Triglycerides contain a glycerol backbone, stabilizing the oil molecules in their natural form. Fish oil in ethyl ester form is HIGHLY UNSTABLE and rapidly breaks down during storage. THEY ARE PROHIBITED IN SWEDEN, DENMARK, AND SOON IN NORWAY AND THE UK.

Additionally, when fish oil is ingested, they are converted into free fatty acids. After absorption through the epithelial cells, free fatty acids are immediately converted into triglycerides. If the glycerol backbone is missing (AS THEY ARE WITH ETHYL ESTERS) and no other glycerol are available, the oil CANNOT BE CONVERTED BACK TO TRIGLYCERIDE FORM. The Fatty acids not converted to triglycerides pose an oxidation burden in the form of free radical formation.

Question: from Elizabeth

I’ve been getting bladder infections for about a month now. I drink cranberry juice and now take an extract I bought at the supermarket but I was wondering if you have something available.

I would much rather take your products if they are available then those found locally. The infection seems to clear up for awhile and then comes back again when I no longer drink the juice. Is there something else I should be doing? Thanks for your help! BTW: your newsletters are wonderful.

Comment: from Warren Matthews of Xtend-Life

Joanna will answer this question. But, I would like to add something further. See if you can get some D-Mannose. This is the best product you can get for bladder infections…better than cranberry juice.

Answer: from Joanna (Medical Nutritionist for Xtend-Life)

Cranberry juice can help bladder infections by producing hippuric acid in the urine, to acidify and help inhibit bacteria growth.

Physicians have always believed that blood clots in the veins were rarely fatal unless they moved to other parts of the body. For example, deep vein thrombosis is rarely fatal unless the blood clot moves through the body to the lungs causing a pulmonary embolism.

However, a large Danish study has established that blood clots in the veins can indeed cause heart attacks and strokes and that the clots do not have to be in the arteries as previously thought.

The bottom line, is that this just reinforces the need to keep your blood and circulation system in good order and avoid the formation of blood clots anywhere in the body. This is the reason why I take our Cardio-Klenz as a preventative measure. I also urge our customers to do the same even if it is just for a period of 6 months a year.

The Cardio-Klenz contains a lot of potent ingredients which helps prevent the formation of blood clots as it contains Nattokinase and other enzymes and extracts for this purpose. It may also help reduce levels of plaque in the arteries as well.

This, according to a new study on Tocotrienols a less well known but important form of Vitamin E. It is still quite an uncommon ingredient in supplements although we have been using it in Total Balance for a number of years. If complements nicely the natural form of Vitamin E that we use and improves its efficacy.

I am surprised that it has been taking so long for other manufacturers to incorporate it in their formulas. Maybe it is due to cost, as it is not cheap.

Anyway, this study specifically looked at the impact of Tocotrienols on DNA damage! They found that it had a significant beneficial impact on not only reducing the DNA damage but also helped in the repair of the DNA.

We should all do what we can to not only minimize the damage to our DNA but to also systematically repair it. This is one of the important objectives with Total Balance.

Question: from Stephen

How does your Neuro Natural compare to Brain Lightning?

Answer: from Warren Matthews of Xtend-Life

The Brain Lightening product seems like a reasonable one, but compared to our Neuro-Natural Memory it is quite weak and very expensive!

Let me try to put this into perspective:

Brain Lightening:

* Costs $110.00 for a bottle of 90 capsules although it is available at a discounted price of $69.95 plus shipping of $5.95 = $75.90. The recommended daily dose is 3 capsules.
* It has 488mgs of active ingredients per capsule.
* It has 60mcg of their key ingredient Huperzine A in three capsules.
* The amounts of many of the active ingredients are not disclosed.

Question: from Bahman.

I would also like to purchase your Omega 3 products. Having looked at your product list, there are two types of Omega 3 :

1) GLM-Omega 3 plus &
2) Omega 3 / DHA Ester.

Could you please advise me which one I should purchase to use it together with Total balance Mens Plus and how many pills should I should take daily.

Answer: from Joanna (Medical Nutritionist for Xtend-Life)

If you are looking for an overall daily supplement regime then I would include the straight Omega 3 / DHAs at 2-3 per day. This is for general maintenance and overall health rather than for a specific problem.

The GLM-Omega 3 Plus formula is for a different purpose. It is the Omega 3 combined with a potent Green Lipped Mussel extract which is useful as a pain reliever and anti-inflammatory, for joint and muscle problems (which is why it is recommended as a compliment to our Arthrit-Eze formula for arthritis related conditions).

Question: from Gayle

By the way, I see that Jordin Rubin, of Garden of Life has just come out with a whole food vitamin.   Don’t know anything about it, but his products sell well here in FL.  I  don’t know if it’s because they are really good or because he is FL based.  I do remember you saying that a product like that would require a lot of ingredients (I think you said that) and would be expensive.  I wonder how it will do.  He seems to write a book every time he brings a product out, very prolific.

Answer: from Warren Matthews of Xtend-Life

I am pleased that you raise this Gayle.  Dr Mercola claims the same for his Multi.

You are right. In order to produce ‘whole foodvitamins the cost would be horrific.  But, neither Garden or Life or Dr Mercola use ‘whole foodvitamins in the strict sense of the word. In other words they are NOT sourced from plants.  They use the same vitamins that we do (in our Total Balance line).

Question: from Marc – Does Beta Carotene Increase Risk of Cancer?

Does Beta Carotene Increase Risk of Cancer? The WCRF have recently released the results from the research carried out looking into foods associated with increased risk of cancer. I noticed that Beta carotene is a supplement they found to increase the risk of Lung Cancer and that your Total balance contains 5000IU of this ingredient. Please let me know whether it is still safe to be taking this supplement.

Comment: from Warren Matthews of Xtend-Life

Joanna will answer this question, but I thought that I should first make a comment. This is another example of a misleading study. There is also a world of difference between taking NATURAL Beta-Carotene in conjunction with many other co-factors such as are present in Total Balance as opposed to taking a synthetic Beta-Carotene as a single stand alone ingredient which should never be ingested in that manner. To suggest that beta-carotene in a natural form in sensible quantities is risky is a bit like saying don’t eat your carrots because you may get cancer. It is nonsense.

I hate the up and down feeling I get sometimes which I think is due to my birth control. Is there any way to help make my mood swings less intense. I hate being on edge one minute and on cloud nine the next!

Question: from Emily

I recently went to my dr. and had my bloodwork done.  My cholesterol was 237.  My triglycerides were 94, my HDL was68, and my LDL was 150. In your opinion do I need to take the 20mg of lovastatin a day that he has prescribed?

Answer: from Warren Matthews of Xtend-Life

I think that your Doctor has been brainwashed by the drug company reps. It is in my opinion irresponsible to propose you take a statin drug with this figures.

Firstly, high cholesterol is only a danger when it is combined with HIGH triglycerides… yours are not.

Next, your Doc has only looked at your TOTAL cholesterol and seems to have ignored that your HDL is 68.

This is incomprehensible!

He would have made this recommendation based on the cholesterol council of America.

Bear in mind that this council is controlled by the statin drug manufacturers would like to have everyone on a statin drug which is why they have a blanket recommendation based on total cholesterol only without consideration to the ratios or triglyceride levels.
