Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments for Psorasis

Psoriasis defined as a chronic skin disorder that commonly affects 1% to 3% of the world’s population.  Psoriasis is characterized by periodic flare-ups of red patched covered by a silvery and flakey scale typically on the scalp.  There are several variations of psoriasis, but the most common plaque psoriasis, but the exact cause of psoriasis is unknown.  It is believed that a combination of several factors contribute to the development of psoriasis.

There is currently no cure for psoriasis and the existing treatments available are aimed at controlling the symptoms of the disease rather than curing it.  Treatment options available for psoriasis range from topical therapies to phototherapy and systemic therapy for the more severe cases of the disease.

All of these treatment options are considered by psoriasis patients to have several drawbacks in terms of convenience, safety, or effectiveness.  The advent of new biological therapies may potentially offer patients suffering from psoriasis hope of long term treatment which is safer than the current available options.

Topical therapies have remained the mainstay of treatment for many patients suffering with mild psoriasis.  Topical treatments work relatively quickly at clearing lesions and are typically well tolerated by the majority of psoriasis sufferers.  However, topical treatments must be used repeatedly to remain effective and are often not able to maintain remission of an outbreak.

Three Tips to Fight Acne

If you suffer from acne as millions of Americans do each year, here are three tips that can help you treat your acne and rid your face of pimples.

Acne affects many people young and old.  You don’t have to be a teenager to suffer from acne, many people suffer acne until their 30’s or even during pregnancy and menopause.  Although acne affects millions of people, treating acne can take only a few minutes each day.  Here are three tips to fight acne.

Wash your face twice a day.

Washing your face twice a day is one of the easiest ways to control or rid your face of acne.  You should use a soap that includes an antibacterial.  Wash your face once in the morning and once in the night.

Eat a healthy diet.

Most people think that certain foods such as chocolate cause pimples.  However this has not been proven true.  You can help your acne out by eating healthy and getting your required vitamins and minerals each day.  Vitamin A and D are great for your skin.  You should also drink plenty of water to keep your skin well hydrated.

Don’t Look Old Before Your Time

by Warren Matthews of Xtend-Life

No matter whether we are 20, 30 or 60 or more years of age, male or female we all want to look our best!

None of us want to look old before our time with drooping or sagging skin, or have skin with blemishes that looks lifeless, dry and with lots of wrinkles!

Have you ever wondered how people of similar age can look so different?  The greater the age the bigger the differences!  Why is it that some people who are 40 years old can look just 25 and yet others at 40 years of age look 60 years old?

Some people would argue that it must be in the genes but that theory is largely discredited.  Most scientists now generally agree that genetics probably don’t play any more that about a 10% role in the way our health or appearance evolves as we age.

So, what are the factors that determine how we look and feel as we age?

There are three key ones, not necessarily in the following order…

Lifestyle

Feed Your Skin - The Top Vital Nutrients for a Healthy, Glowing Complexion

Diet is extremely important to skin care. Housewives, as well as those working in the business world, often fall into the trap of skipping lunch or relying on snacks or `processed` sandwiches. Much easier to prepare, and much healthier, would be a hard-boiled egg and a tomato, a piece of cheese and an apple, or a mug of milk and a piece of fruit.

Do not forget to drink plenty of water, it is not fattening and it helps to flush out and clear the system. Many women like to begin the day with a little freshly squeezed or bottled but unsweetened lemon juice. Some beauty therapists suggest adding to this a spoonful of honey if you are spotty; others suggest drinking no less than eight glasses of water per day between meals.

“Your skin is the fingerprint of what is going on inside your body, and all skin conditions, from psoriasis to acne to aging, are the manifestations of your body’s internal needs, including its nutritional needs,” says Georgiana Donadio, PhD, DC, MSc, founder and director of the National Institute of Whole Health in Boston.

Now that we know how important it is, what nutrients does your skin need the most?

Homeopathy Help for Acne, Blackheads

Homeopathic remedy temporarily treats symptoms of acne vulgaris including blackheads on the face and body

Spot the difference through natural cleansing

While they are a fact of life, pimples, boils, acne and blackheads are also inconvenient, bothersome, and unattractive. They also affect more than 85% of all people aged 12-24. Skin eruptions occur in 1-in-4 adults between the ages of 25-44, with women and teenagers especially vulnerable during hormonal changes.

The skin contains oil glands to keep itself moisturized. However, when these sebaceous glands overproduce, the excess oils lead to an excess of sebum, which in turn forms pimples and pustules on the skin’s surface. Skin pores can also become blocked, forming blackheads.

Facial pustules can be very distressing, leading to lowered self-esteem, which can affect daily social interactions. By addressing problem skin proactively, you can help control the problem and treat acne naturally.

The natural way

The skin is not unlike other organs in the body that require good nutrients and balance for sustained health. Eating regular, healthy meals and drinking enough water can go a long way to providing the nutritional needs of skin cells and moisturizing the skin to act as a preventative natural acne remedy.

Antibiotic treatment of chronic acne - is it a necessary evil?

Although sometimes it affects adults too, acne is primarily a teenage problem as it surfaces mostly when one attains puberty. The most common cause of acne is known to be an oily skin. The male hormone testosterone that is released at puberty can rise to levels that are higher than what the body requires.

The hormone works on oil glands and a series of changes occur:

* there is an increased production of oil
* the oils comes out on the surface of the skin
* the skin pores get blocked
* the entrapped oil is infected with bacteria
* pustules, pimples or comedons (black heads) are formed

Treatment of acne is dependent on the severity of the condition. The first line of treatment is definitely topical, using antiseptic washes containing benzoyl peroxide and other mild acids that are available over the counter.

An antiseptic soap also helps if it is used on the affected areas as well as hands to keep the bacteria from spreading. Topical ointments and creams help to dry the skin and kill bacteria. Some creams containing erythromycin and retinoids require a prescription from a doctor.

The Best Natural Acne Treatment

Trying to decide what the best natural treatment for you can be a very difficult decision. You may have even tried one or two over the counter treatments without much success, and decided that it was not worth the effort. Often, the harsh medications in over the counter skin products can dry your skin out more; leading to redness and peeling, and maybe even making it more uncomfortable than it was with the acne alone.

If the over the counter treatments have not worked that well for you, you might take a shot at natural remedies. More and more people are finding that the natural products for acne do a better job at clearing up the problem without the uncomfortable side effects. Many of the natural acne products are designed to be hypoallergenic to keep them from irritating your skin further. Often they will contain different vitamins and herbs that have been shown to naturally heal your skin.

One downside to treating your acne naturally is that it may take longer to clear your skin up than some of the other options. However, the effects of the treatment will usually last longer, so you will not have to continue them as often. Many patients also report fewer side effects with the natural acne treatments than with pharmaceutical medications.
