Stretch Marks and Weight Gain

We all know that weight gain can lead to many medical problems including diabetes in children, adolescents and adults. Obesity, which can shorten the life span by at least a decade or more, may cause strokes and heart disease. However, one of the big problems with weight gain is stretch marks. When people gain weight, the skin becomes more like elastic and has to stretch to occupy the excess weight gain.

Stretch marks usually start in young teens going through puberty. As the body grows, many young woman experience stretch marks as breasts and hips grow in. The skin can only stretch so much. Weight gain and stretch marks are very closely related. When people gain weight the skin is overstretched and the collagen in the skin is changed. The result will be deep reddish purple or light shiny white lines.

These lines may fade with time but if the weight is kept on, the marks will only get thicker. When the blood vessels recover and go back in to the skin, they turn white but stay with the body. With the adding of pounds to the body, the blood vessels in the stretch marks get more thinned out and seem a deeper color. This is where the purple hue comes from.

Varicose veins are generally a dark purple or blue in color and can be found in many different shapes and sizes. They often twist up and down the skin, which is why they are known as “spider veins.”

Home Remedy for Body Odor

Are you bothered by body odor caused by perspiration?  If so, there are natural ways of reducing body odor that you should know about.  Many people find deodorants and underarm sprays are not enough to prevent excessive sweating or body odor

Perspiration or sweat comes from salty fluids the body is getting rid of.  Body odor is a result of the sweat and the smell is individual to each person.  Excessive sweating can be caused by weather, medications, your gender, and by the foods you are eating.  Your occupation may be a major factor in how much you perspire.  Stress is also a major reason for perspiration problems.  Your body sweats to help control temperature when you are in a hot climate, or are exercising.

The most natural way to control perspiration and body odor is to shower or bathe every day.  Using deodorant and body talc will help control the problem as well.  But what if you need more than that?  Here are a few suggestions to help control your perspiration problem naturally.

How to Make Luscious Cream Perfume - Formula

Adapted from Perfumes, Splashes, and Colognes, by Nancy M. Booth (Storey Books, 1997). http://www.care2.com/

I couldn’t believe how easy it is to make this luxurious cream perfume. It is such a great gift idea, and so quick you can whip up a batch at the very last minute and still have it done in plenty of time!

We include two different formulas: one is bright and citrusy (according to a recent study I just saw discussed on the internet, wearing citrus scents makes you appear thinner to the opposite sex!) and one spicily reminiscent of the Three Kings’ gifts. Both are completely divine.

INGREDIENTS

* 2 tablespoons grated beeswax
* 2 tablespoons sweet almond oil
* 1-2 teaspoons pure essential oils

1. Melt beeswax in an enamel or glass pan over boiling water. Add sweet almond oil; combine. Be patient with this step; it’s important to blend them completely.

2. Allow the mixture to cool slightly before adding the oils of your choice (see formulas below).

3. Fill small clean, dry glass jars with the solid perfume.

Information About Psoriasis for the Newly Diagnosed

You just received the diagnosis of psoriasis, and you have a million questions regarding your skin condition. Your doctor or the nurse at the office may have answered your immediate questions and possibly handed you a brochure containing more information. You may have browsed through the brochure only to find more questions popping up in your mind about everything from caring for your skin to how to prevent future breakouts of your psoriasis.

You will soon find many resources in your neighborhood and online that will give you current information about how to daily care for your skin. Joining a local support group or finding one to join online can also give you up-to-date information about psoriasis. Reading articles such as this one, and then printing it out can also give you a handy guide to follow everyday.

How do I pronounce what I have?

Psoriasis is pronounced like you are saying “SORE” then the word “EYE”, the expression “AH”, and then the name for a sister, “SIS”.

Almond, Honey & Rose Body Scrub

Salt is an excellent body scrub; almonds and honey help to moisturize while smoothing skin.

* 1⁄2 cup finely ground almonds
* 1⁄2 cup sea salt
* 2 tablespoons almond oil
* 2 tablespoons liquid honey
* 5 drops frankincense essential oil
* 5 drops rose essential oil

Mix all ingredients together in a small unbreakable container. Wet your body in a warm shower, and apply the scrub to your legs, arms and torso. Massage into your skin with a circular motion, rinse well and pat your skin dry. The oil in this body scrub makes the tub slippery, so use a rubber tub mat to prevent falls.

Women’s Health Tip - What Works for Varicose Veins?

by Dr. Weil - http://www.drweil.com/

Grape seed extract is commonly prescribed in France for varicose veins and other vascular problems. It contains powerful antioxidant compounds called oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs), which have been found in lab and animal studies to make blood vessels more elastic and also less likely to leak fluids that cause the leg swelling often associated with varicose veins.

However, the natural product I generally recommend for varicose veins is horse-chestnut seed extract (HCSE), a remedy popular in Germany that is believed to work similarly to grape seed extract (to reduce pain and swelling in the legs) but has been more extensively studied.

The major active ingredient in HCSE is believed to be the compound escin, which helps support normal vessel wall functioning. The dosage for varicose veins is 250 to 300 mg twice a day of standardized horse-chestnut seed extract (the equivalent of 100 mg of escin).
