Olive Oil - Not Just for Cooking

March 17th, 2007

Olive Oil is a rich non-drying oil suitable for use in various cosmetic applications. Olive Oil can be used in a range of skin preparations including massage and bath oils, Moisturizers, ointments and balms, Soaps, shampoos and herbal infusions.

Olive Oil’s chemical free nature makes it suitable for those who have allergic reactions to substances used in mass-produced Soaps. Olive Oil Soap produces a hard Soap that dries quickly, is mild and non-drying to the skin, has a rich creamy lather and lasts longer than most other vegetable, animal and mineral oil Soaps.

Despite their many benefits the cost of ingredients and production will keep Olive Oil-based cosmetics at the higher end of the market. Cheaper olive oils and blends can be used, however the trade-off for reduced price is a loss of quality.

Even if you do not eat it, Olive Oil is an amazing health remedy. According to researchers, putting extra virgin Olive Oil on your skin after sunbathing could protect you from ultraviolet radiation. It is not a sunscreen, but Vitamin E and other Antioxidants nab free radicals caused by the sun before they do too much harm. Just make sure you use extra virgin regular Olive Oil is not as effective.

Emollients containing Olive Oil are useful in Psoriasis, excema and dermatitis treatment; they slow the loss of water through the skin layers. The thicker the cream or lotion, the more effective it is likely to be.

Maintaining adequate moisture can relieve the pain of dry skin and reduce scaling and inflammation, without causing any side effects. Regularly applying thick lotions and creams directly to the skin is sometimes very effective in clearing the symptoms.

Simple Hand Balm

March 17th, 2007

Ingredients:

Directions

In a large glass measuring cup put the jelly, oil and butter together and melt at 30 second intervals at high power until melted. Keep track of this time for future batches. Remove and stir. Pierce Vit E capsules with a pin a squeeze into mixture. Add Lemon grass oil to desired strength. What you smell is what you get. It does not lose it’s strength when cooled. I pour this right back into the original petroleum jelly container and add my own label. Use on hands and feet after a bath and at bedtime. Use sparingly. The Vit E aids healing.

Eucalyptus Chest Rub

March 17th, 2007

Preparation: Add the Beeswax to the Olive Oil and heat until the Beeswax is melted. Use very low heat or a double boiler to prevent burning the oil. When the wax is melted, remove the oil from the heat then add the Essential Oils and stir to blend. When the mixture is cool it is ready to use. You can make this using only the Eucalyptus oil if preferred.

To use rub a small amount on the chest as needed to relieve congestion.

Use Rose Essential Oil for Depression and Fatigue

March 17th, 2007

Rose oil is one of the most popular Essential Oils. It has a rich floral fragrance conjuring up images of romance, luxury and pampering. More importantly its properties are said to be:

  • Antidepressant
  • Calming, Soothing, Relaxing, Restful
  • Sensuous, Aphrodisiac
  • Uplifting
  • Balancing
  • Improves confidence
  • Reduces fatigue, stress and exhaustion

Rose oil is made from Rose petals. As you can imagine it takes a lot of petals to produce a very small amount of oil. Estimates suggest that it may take a ton of petals to produce 300 grams of Rose Oil.

Unfortunately the real McCoy is very expensive, however you can buy the more affordable Rose Geranium (also known as Rose-French oil) which seems to work almost as well at one-tenth of the price. It contains many of the same ingredients as Rose - geraniol, linalool and citronellol - and it has similar properties and scent.

I use it as a perfume when I’m going out (great for dates) or when I feel tired or agitated. I have found it works extremely well. If I have a meeting that might be stressful or a speaking engagement I put a drop or two on my wrist and sniff my wrist whenever I feel my mood or energy levels drop.

According to Medical Aromatherapist, Tania Cottew three drops of Rose Geranium oil are equivalent to one drop of Rose Oil for the emotional aspects such as Depression - hmmm maybe it’s not such a bargain after all!

Applying Essential Oils direct to the skin is not usually recommended, however Rose Geranium does not inflame the skin as other Essential Oils can. If your skin is sensitive I suggest you place a few drops of the oil on a tissue or hanky and sniff this or pop it in your top pocket. You can also place this by your pillow for an improved night’s sleep. Alternatively you can add Rose Geranium to a Carrier Oil such as Almond oil and apply this directly to your skin.

How to Make Your Own Aromatic Flower Water

March 17th, 2007
  • Large pot (12 to 6 quarts)
  • 1 clean brick or flat rock
  • Bunch of aromatic Herbs or flowers (approximately 1/2 gallon or 2 pounds)
  • Glass bowl that fits down inside the pot (with 1 inch clearance around all sides)
  • Water
  • Stainless steel bowl large enough to sit on top of the large pot
  • 1 chunk of ice, preferable block (fill a milk jug up and freeze, then cut it out).

To make:

Place large pot on stove. Place brick/flat stone inside.

Arrange the fresh herbal material around the brick.

Add water up to the top of the brick. This will cover the Herbs or flowers.

Place the glass bowl on top of the brick. This is where the distilled floral water will collect.

Set the stainless steel bowl on top of the pot and add large chunk of ice to the bowl.

Turn the stove burner on low. Gently simmer the herbal mixture on the lowest heat for about 3 hrs.

After 3 hrs remove the remove the cover and enjoy. The floral water will have collected in the glass bowl. This is called a steaming method.

To recap:

  • Steel bowl with ice in it (acts as the lid as well). Make sure it’s big enough to act as a lid.
  • Glass bowl on top of brick
  • Herbs covered in water in the large pot

Bottle the floral water in a capped container, use as an astringent or add to other recipes such as Face Creams, bath waters etc. Refrigerate if you are going to keep for any length of time. Once you blend into your recipes it will be fine.
