�I don�t think I can be hypnotized,� and �I went for hypnosis once, but couldn�t �go under�� are common statements heard in the initial conversations with those inquiring about hypnotherapy.

The fact is 90 � 90% of adults can be hypnotized. The best subjects for hypnosis are people who are highly intelligent and who have a strong will. Why? Hypnosis depends more upon imagination than on will and most intelligent people have active imaginations. Intelligence and a strong will lend understanding of what hypnosis is and motivation to achieve it, lessening any resistance to the process. It is resistance and fear that are the culprits generally preventing hypnosis.

The word hypnosis is derived from the Greek ‘ypnos’ which translated means sleep. Hypnosis though is a trance like state and not sleep because the subject can talk and stays alert. Ancient civilizations used a type of hypnosis for many group rituals such as chanting to a steady drum beat which was used in many religious ceremonies. Back in the 1600s people experimented with animals. Chickens were calmed hypnotically by various methods such as balancing wood shavings on their beaks. Farmers learned to hypnotize hens to make them sit on eggs which were not their own.

There are two main reasons as I understand it. First, smoking is a stubborn habit that naturally connects with many everyday activities, times of day, social interactions, and emotional states that continually ‘trigger the urge to smoke ‘often at an unconscious level. In this way, smoking becomes like a reliable, old friend that offers relaxation, comfort, and focus with every interaction (puff). Its like the old song goes - ‘breaking up is hard to do’.
