Blood Pressure Medicine Norvasc

A popular blood pressure medicine, norvasc, is a type of medicine called a calcium channel blocker (CCB). It is used to treat high blood pressure, also called hypertension, and a type of chest pain called angina.

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is when your blood is pushing against the arteries too hard this happens when the arteries are constricted. This increase in pressure, or the pressure the heart needs to exert in order to push the blood through the body, will damage the heart muscle over time. Hypertension can be related to poor dietary habits, obesity, smoking, side effect of medications or in more rare cases because of genetics. Many times people who are within normal limits for their weight will blame their blood pressure problems on genetics when in fact research has shown that people can have a very positive effect on their hypertension by changing their diet, getting exercise, and stop using cigarettes and alcohol.

For people who are unable to make the necessary changes to effect their blood pressure, or who have made the changes but their blood pressure hasnt decreased, high blood pressure medicine, norvasc, is a good choice. The high blood pressure medicine, norvasc, relaxes your blood vessels which lets the blood flow more easily and helps to lower your blood pressure.

The high blood pressure medicine, norvasc, is also used to treat angina. This pain is distinctive. It is pain or discomfort that is triggered when your heart doesnt get enough blood and life giving oxygen. The muscle, starving for oxygen, begins to constrict and parts begin to die. One immediate treatment is nitroglycerin which will immediately relax the arteries and allow more blood and oxygen through. Some patients experience angina only with exertion while others experience unstable angina which occurs at rest or with exertion and is unpredictable.

Angina pain feels like a pressing or squeezing pain in the chest directly under the sternum or breast bone. Sometimes the pain is referred or happens in other parts of the upper body such as the shoulders, arm, neck, jaw or back. The high blood pressure medicine norvasc is prescribed to treat angina.

*There are specific reasons you shouldnt take the high blood pressure medicine norvasc. Patients who are allergic to amlodipine (the active ingredient) or the inactive ingredients used as preservatives and stabilizers. Before starting any new medication your doctor should be well aware of all of the different medications, protocols and supplementations you are taking. Most medications have drug interactions when mixed when other ingredients. Your body is one big chemical lab. If you mix too many chemicals together you can get reactions that you havent planned for.

You physician should also know about all of your medical history since Norvasc may cause problems if you have liver or kidney problems, ever had a heart attack, are pregnant or plan to become pregnant or are breast feeding. All of these conditions will have a negative effect on your life or the life of your child if you take Norvasc.

When you are taking the high blood pressure medicine Norvasc you can watch out for the common side effects that include headache, stomach pain, nausea, flushing, arrhythmia, dizziness, swelling of the legs or ankles, tiredness, or heart palpitations.
