Going back to school after the summer break can be difficult and rough for any child, but it’s often especially more so for kids dealing with ADHD and ADD.

Parents who are cognizant of this can do something to make the transition to the more structured life of the classroom as smooth as possible. It is best not to wait until the first day of school to address your child’s needs.

Was your child off of ADHD/ADD medications during the summer break? If so, you may want to restart treatment a week or two before school starts to get the child back into the routine of taking medicine each day.

Covering and handling all of your bases now will make for an easier and better school year, ease the transition period, and assure that your childs needs are being met.

Up to 7% of all children are affected

ADHD affects about 3% to 7% of all school-age children, according to the American Psychiatric Association. These symptoms can cause kids with ADHD to have significant academic and behavioral difficulties in school, as well as problems at home and in relationships with others. A little preparation and effort can go a long way toward making this year your childs most successful school year ever.

Start early

Perhaps most importantly, dont wait until you receive your childs first report card to initiate or resume treatment, because by then your child may have already fallen behind, cautions Dr. Frank A. Lopez, a neurodevelopmental pediatrician in private practice at the Childrens Developmental Center. Prepare and equip your child with the medication and support he or she needs to start the school year off on the right foot and to ensure your child is equipped to successfully grasp new classes and topics.

It is difficult to say exactly how soon your child should go back on medication before the school year starts as every child is different. Some professionals and doctors might say there’s no time like the present as children with ADHD/ADD should continuously take their medications.

If there’s depression, anxiety, or aggression, all of these may also need to be treated in addition to some of the basic ADHD and ADD characteristics and symptoms.

There is a Natural Solution!

It’s important to know and understand what’s going on with the child and to use the best techniques, such as natural remedies with NO SIDE EFFECTS, to deal with those problems.

A new review of past studies on the effect that ADHD/ADD prescription psychiatric drugs, such as Ritalin, Concerta, Strattera and Adderall, have on children’s growth concludes that these prescription drugs do, in fact, suppress growth. Pooled data from these studies found there was an effect on height and weight while children were taking these drugs. “There was a significant effect on growth for both height and weight during the duration of treatment,” according to Dr. Omar Khwaja, an instructor in neurology at Children’s Hospital Boston.

Natural remedies are used to gently and effectively treat the symptoms, while at the same time helping the person to heal and to reach a state of balance and health.

The natural approach is less harmful and more thorough and has a greater chance of curing the problem altogether, instead of keeping the individual on psychiatric drugs for many years.
