Lotion For Dry Hands

Filed under: Oil Blends For Beauty, Hands and Feet — Administrator @ 10:32 am

Stumble it!
  • 8 oz. unscented lotion (many sellers of natural products and aromatherapy products sell unscented lotion, shower gel and shampoo)
  • 10 drops Patchouli
  • 20 drops Sandalwood
  • 5 drops Carrot Seed

Directions:

The best way to blend the oils with the lotion is to pour the lotion into a bowl, add the oils and then mix very well. Once mixed, add the lotion back to the bottle.

Patchouli, Sandalwood and Carrot seed oils help aid with dry skin. The Patchouli and Sandalwood oils have a lovely rich scent when blended together. The Carrot seed oil is wonderful for the skin, but is a little harsh in aroma.

Borage and Evening Primrose are wonderful Carrier Oils for helping the skin. If you have either of these oils or can afford to get a small quantity, add a little to your lotion for to give your skin even more nourishment.

It is always wise to do a skin patch test first on new blends first before using often to ensure that you do not have a sensitivity to the blend.

Lavender Sweet Breath Lozenges

Filed under: Oil Blends For Beauty, Mouth and Teeth — Administrator @ 12:25 pm

Stumble it!

These sweet Lavender pastilles were once most fashionable among ladies
as a breath freshener after indulging in a little wine. A few drops of
Essential Oil of Lavender were added to well sieved powdered sugar and
mixed thoroughly. It was then bound with sufficient lightly beaten egg
white to form a stiff paste, and small portions shaped into lozenge
shaped pastilles. These were then set aside to dry and harden in a warm
place.

While these pastilles were an emergency social measure, a mouth wash
made from an infusion of Sage leaves was much favoured for everyday use,
as was Sage toothpaste.

Homemade Mouthwash

Filed under: Oil Blends For Beauty, Mouth and Teeth — Administrator @ 8:43 am

Stumble it!
  • 4 oz. Water
  • 4 oz. Vodka (vodka may be substituted for water OR a pure Rosemary tea infusion)
  • 4 teaspoons Liquid Glycerine (available at many drug stores), optional – simply sweetens the mouthwash
  • 10-12 drops Peppermint or Spearmint Essential Oil
  • 5 drops Myrrh (optional – Myrrh can assist in mouth and gum care)

Notes: This recipe makes a rather minty mouthwash but as it contains no added flavorings, it is not as sweet or strong as commercially available mouthwashes.

Boil the water and vodka then add the glycerine. Remove from the heat and let cool for 10 minutes. Add the Essential Oils and let cool for 1/2 hour and bottle. I like to bottle the mouthwash in a clear plastic bottle that has a flip top to make it easy to pour the mouthwash into a small dixie cup for use.

Apricot and Lemon Lip Balm

Melt the Beeswax. Add the Apricot and Calendula oils, stirring constantly. Remove from heat while stirring, and when partly cooled, add the Essential Oil. Store in a small pot.

Note: “Using tablespoons, this makes 4 Balm jars.” “There are places you can buy empty plastic or glass lip Balm jars and I’m sure there are some on the Internet. I have used a clean, empty soup can for the mixing. Be careful that your heat source isn’t too hot. ...”

Simple Facial Cleanser

Filed under: Oil Blends For Beauty, Skincare — Administrator @ 10:33 am

Stumble it!

Did you know that you don’t need to use Soap to clean your face?

In many places around the world, many women use a blend of Carrier Oils and Essential Oils to clean their skin.

It can be used to clean all types of skin.

As a young girl growing up, I would watch my older sisters clean their faces. They wore makeup and so had to remove it each night. I remember one of them used a Face Cream by or called “Ponds”. I’m not even sure if they make it any more. My other sister used ” Noxzema”. The Ponds was soft and creamy, so was the Noxzema, but the Noxzema had a terrible smell at least to a 5 year old!

Anyway, the basis of these was to loosen and remove any oily residues from the makeup and to help clean the skin and pores of the daily dirt that accumulated.

You can make your own face cleanser the same way by using a blend of Carrier Oils and Essential Oils.

Simply blend a Carrier Oil (about 3 ounces) with a little water (1-2 ounces) and a few drops (1-3) of your favorite Essential Oil. Whip in a blender at high speed. The blender will make a soft whip type oily paste/ cream that you can then use to remove the days grime.

What Carrier Oils are best for your skin type? If you have very dry skin use Avocado oil . If you have oily skin a light oil such as Sweet Almond or Sunflower oil would be best.

What Essential Oils to use? Of course this may be a personal preference. Some oils you might want to use include Clary Sage, Lemon, Lime, Rosemary, Roman Chamomile, Lavender or Geranium . Remember though, only use a couple drops of one or two of these oils.

After you have finished removing the Oil Blend with a soft cloth or makeup removing pads, you should rinse your face with a little water. After this you can pat your face dry or apply a toner followed by your night creams or lotions if you feel they are necessary. Most likely though your face will feel – oh so soft!

Some women may want to add a little ‘scrubbing’ ingredient. There are several you can choose from. Some mix a little brown sugar into the oil (omit any water from this scrub) or ground almonds, oatmeal or cornmeal. If you choose to add these to the mix you will need to use within 3 days of blending. Also, you will need to keep it in the refrigerator to keep them from spoiling.

No matter what you choose, your skin will feel soft and supple. Remember Carrier Oils are very nourishing to the skin. We have a very large selection to choose from including the two most commonly used for face and Skin Care.

Jojoba and Camellia oil are excellent oils but you may want to use them blended with a less expensive oil such as Almond or Sunflower. Only a small amount of Jojoba or Camellia oilwould be needed in each blend. Of course you could use them straight or apply just a small amount after your cleaning ritual.

Aromatherapy For Nail Fungus

Filed under: Oil Blends For Health, Hands and Feet — Administrator @ 10:36 pm

Stumble it!

Fungus amongus – Yikes!

When you have a fungal infection that has invaded your finger and toenails it can be one of the hardest things to get rid of.

Unfortunately, fungal infections can be transmitted easily and once they begin can be hard to eliminate.

Several prescription drugs are available but can have detrimental effects on your liver. So many people seek alternative methods for treating this problem.

To start with you need to get a positive diagnosis from your physician and then make sure they have no objection to you trying an alternative solution to this problem.

Once you have the okay there are certain things you need to do besides using Essential Oils.

1. Be sure you are willing to follow the regimen for the length of time needed. Treating nails for fungus can take several months. You will need to continue until the nails have all grown in with new nails.

2. Wash your feet and clean your toes daily. Dry them thoroughly. (If you have infections in you fingernails you still need to clean them good and dry them too!)

3. Change your socks every day, twice a day if you have Sweating feet problems.

4. Use a drying powder – ideal would be to use talc powder impregnated with Tea Tree Essential Oil. Do not use cornstarch as this is food for fungus.

5. Rotate the shoes you wear. Set them outdoors into the sunlight to air them out, but also let the sun help to destroy any fungus.

6. Limit your sugar and sweets. Fungus love high levels of sugar. And if you have too much sweets, they stay in your blood and can “feed” the fungus. That is one reason Diabetics (or undiaganosed diabetics) often times have problems with nail fungal infections, along with Candidiasis, yeast, etc.

7. Wear shoes made of cotton or leather. Or wear no shoes as much as possible (while indoors of course).

8. Consult your physician if you see no improvement after one month. You may have to resort to conventional medicine :-(

To begin you will need to set time aside each day for soaking your feet (or hands). You should begin by washing your feet (or hands) thoroughly. Clean underneath the nails with an Orange stick to remove any dead cells and debris.

In a basin place some room temperature water (about 4 cups) and also 4 cups of distilled vinegar.

Yep, we are pickling your feet!! No not really. But Vinegar is great at killing fungus and it is not too objectionable.

Add 5-6 drops of Tea Tree oil to this foot bath. Sit and soak for 30 – 60 minutes.

When you are done, dry your feet well.

You can reuse the same basin of water for 2- 3 days. You will need to add a few more drops of the Tea Tree oil as it will diffuse into the air overnight.

A good time to soak your feet is shortly before bedtime.

You can also add a little Lavender to the basin if you like.

Kurt Schnaubelt, Ph.D in his book “Advanced Aromatherapy” notes that Tea Tree may not work for all toenail fungus. He suggests you try the following blend applied to the affected nails. This is a very strong blend and you should test before hand to make sure you do not have a reaction to these oils. This recipe is a two step process. Please follow directions carefully.

Step one:

Blend these oils in an amber bottle.

Step two:

Add 5 ml of the above mixture into 15 ml of your choice of Carrier Oil. (I would recommend Sunflower oil) Blend well.

Next: Apply 1 drop to each affected nail twice a day. Be sure your feet/hands are clean and dry before applying. (see above).

If you see no improvement after 14 days, discontinue. How do you know if there is improvement? You will see new healthy Nail Growth. No more hard, discolored yellow nails. New healthy growth will begin to show near the nails growth area.

After 14 days, and if you see improvement, you should use at least once daily thereafter until there is a complete new nail.

Essential Oils How To Use - Aromatherapy Skin Care

Filed under: General Aromatherapy Articles, Skincare — Administrator @ 8:43 am

Stumble it!

First, please remember that Essential Oils should never be applied neat (undiluted) to your skin. There are absolutely NO exceptions to this! This includes the soles of your feet or palms of your hands. When using oils neat for inhalation purposes please exercise care and dispense your oils on a tissue or cotton ball for direct inhalation.

AROMATHERAPY Skin Care METHODS FOR FACIAL CLEANSING AND CELLULAR RENEWAL:

FACIAL STEAM ~ As part of a deep cleansing routine disperse 3 to 5 drops of Essential Oil in a teaspoon of milk or honey and mix into a pint of steaming hot water.

Pour this “HOT” mixture into a stainless steel mixing bowl and lean with your face forward, over the bowl being sure to cover your head with a towel to catch the steam on your face.

Breath in the steam and relax, enjoying your facial steam until the waters cool.

Or you may use your oils in a facial steamer.

PLEASE NOTE: Essential Oils are not water soluble you must use a dispersant when adding them to a facial steam or bath. Water may cause the oils to penetrate your system more quickly or cause irritation to sensitive or damaged skin, i.e. blemishes, sores or rash.

FACIAL MASQUE ~ Add 2-3 drops of Essential Oils to moistened Clay, honey, mashed Avocado, or egg white.

Dampen your face lightly and apply your facial masque. Leave on for 10-15 minutes until your masque begins to dry and harden slightly.

Wash your facial masque thoroughly off your face. Your face will look and feel more toned, fresh and hydrated. Repeat once a week for healthy and toned skin!

FACIAL Oil Blend ~ Add up to 10 drops of Essential Oil blend, depending upon your skin type, to one ounce of your favorite Carrier Oil. I prefer Certified Organic Filtered and Unscented Jojoba oil which is most like your skin’s own natural sebum.

Frankincense is good for all skin types. German Chamomile is excellent for sensitive skin. Rose is wonderful for mature skin, as is Frankincense.

Apply your facial Oil Blend lightly to target areas for intensive therapy to nourish and heal facial skin.

SKIN BRUSHING ~ Invigorates your skin, and stimulates your lymphatic system.

Apply 1 drop of (Lavender, Frankincense, Rose or Geranium – all are excellent for Skin Care) in 1 Tablespoon of honey and apply mixture to your natural bristle skin brush and brush your skin.

Make sure your gentle, yet brisk brush strokes are upward, toward your heart. Brush your entire body from the tips of your toes and fingers to the top of your shoulders. Include the front and back sides of your body as you breathe deeply.

Enjoy the wonderful tingling sensations dancing across your skin. Always be sure to work from your extremities upwards, toward your heart. Gently, yet briskly, cover your entire body, omitting your face and neck in the process of this cleansing and uplifting ritual. Skin brushing is especially effective just before you shower.

Properly administered Essential Oils are a natural, safe and effective way to enhance your health and well-being and can produce satisfying results where other methods have failed. Please consult with your physician regarding your health concerns.

Aromatherapy and Hair Growth

Filed under: General Aromatherapy Articles, Oil Blends For Beauty, Hair Care — Administrator @ 12:00 pm

Stumble it!

Hair Growth. A subject that is near and dear to the hearts of many. If you’ve never been one with fine hair or watched your once thick tresses dwindle in number you may never understand the feelings of dread and frustration that can accompany the loss of your hair.

Growing up my mom always told me “A woman’s hair is her shining glory” and it’s stuck with me all these years. She was just trying to get me past that pre- teen “I-don’t-need-to-wash-my-hair-it’s-only-been- a-week-or-so” phase but even now, all these years later it’s something that rings in my ears each time I break out the shampoo (thankfully, it’s now more than once a week!).

While bald can certainly be beautiful, not all of us are ready, willing nor do we want to show off our shiny pates! For those of us who are desperately clinging to the hairs we still have left on our heads and would like to encourage more to stick around for a longer period of time, this month’s recipes have been created.

So now you’re wondering, “Can Essential Oils really work to help grow hair?” Well, a study was performed by Scottish researchers who had half their patients massage a blend of Essential Oils in Jojoba oil into their scalps before shampooing. The other half of the study group only got Jojoba oil to massage on in the same manner. After seven months 44% of the patients using Essential Oils had significant improvement in their Hair Growth. The control group who only used the Jojoba oil showed a 15% improvement. Check out our recipe section to find out what they used!

Scottish Hair Growth Formula

Massage this blend into your scalp and allow it to sit for 15-20 minutes before shampooing off. Better yet, do it before bed and shampoo off in the morning!

  • 10 drops Rosemary (Rosemarinus officianalis)
  • 10 drops Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia)
  • 6 drops Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica)
  • 4 drops Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)

Add oils to Jojoba in a glass or plastic bottle, shake well and massage 2 tsp into scalp. Shampoo off. Dry and style hair as usual.

Healthy Hair and Scalp Final Rinse

Keep this blend handy each time you shampoo!

  • 5 drops Rosemary (Rosemarinus officianalis)
  • 3 drops Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia)
  • 2 drops Sage (Salvia lavandulaefolia)
  • 1 litre water

Add Essential Oils to your container of water and shake well. Pour over head working into scalp and through the ends of your hair as a final rinse. Do not rinse out.

Dry Scalp Massage oil

Feels like your scalp had a trip to the spa!

Gently warm Jojoba oil (double boiler or microwave) and add Essential Oil. Stir (or shake if in sealed container) gently to blend. Massage into clean scalp and work oil through to the ends of the hair. Wrap hair in plastic wrap and a warm towel for 20 minutes. The heat will allow the oil to better penetrate the hair shaft. Shampoo out as normal afterwards.

Make Your Own Cool Shower Gel

Filed under: Oil Blends For Beauty, Body Care — Administrator @ 12:47 pm

Stumble it!

Now that the heat is on, we can cool off in the bath or shower with this easy-to-make, all-natural gel. Even after overexposure to the sun, it will leave your skin feeling dewy and smooth, tingly and refreshed—a great warm-weather treat!

Make some for yourself and your friends; poured into a pretty bottle, this would be a great gift, too.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 cup herbal shampoo (look for one that is detergent-free; avoid labels that list any variation of “sodium lauryl Sulfate”)
  • 1/4 to 3/4 cup water
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 8 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
  • 2 tablespoons Aloe Vera gel

1. Blend all the ingredients thoroughly, adjusting the amount of water to get the desired consistency.

2. Pour into a bottle or jar.

3. Place a dab of this cooling gel in your hand to use instead of Soap.

Helpful Hints:

Formula may be doubled or tripled to make extra for gifts.

And please be sure to use pure Peppermint Essential Oil, not a fragrance oil.

Soak 3 round Tbsp. flax seeds in 2 cups water overnight.

In the morning boil the seeds and strain the seeds out. Mix the mucilage
with 16 oz. apple cider vinegar with 5 Tbsp. of vegetable Glycerin.

You can use Lemon juice but it tends to spoil if not used right away.
The vinegar will not smell after it evaporates.

Boil again and then beat with egg beater or blender. Add a few drops of
Lavender oil and place in the bathroom in a liquid Soap dispenser.
