Citrus Potpourri

Filed under: Home and Hearth, General Aromatherapy Articles — Administrator @ 9:29 am

Stumble it!

Gather dried leaves, flowers, and small wood shavings. Crush these plant materials to the desired size. Place 1/2 cup (120 ml) of plant material in a widemouthed glass jar, and add the Essential Oil formula. Stir the contents well and tighten the lid on the jar. Let the potpourri sit for several days to allow the aroma molecules to be absorbed by the plant material.

These recipes are from “500 Formulas for Aromatherapy” by Carol & David Schiller

Controlling Moths With Oils

Filed under: Home and Hearth — Administrator @ 5:54 pm

Stumble it!

This is the time of year that you will see a few different household moths. They are trying to get into the clothes closets or maybe they are the grain type moths that have entered your home after grocery shopping.
We usually see the grain type moths as we have dog food bins and I think they come around because of the dog food.

In either case, you will want to try to keep them away from your clothing, especially anything woolen or blended with Wool. You certainly don’t need holes in your garments.

The Essential Oil of choice to repel clothing moths is Cedarwood . Many people have Cedarwood lined closets or storage chests. If you don’t though you can always use Cedarwood Essential Oil.

Simply place several drops on a Terra Cotta Disc Diffuser and place in your drawers or closets. (Do let the oil soak into the Diffuser before placing in these areas.

You can of course, use Lavender sachets and add several drops of Cedarwood Essential Oil to that and place in your drawers and closets too. You will have to add more Essential Oils to both the sachets and Terra Cotta Discdiffusers but you will need to monitor this by your own sense of smell. Most likely you will need to add more Essential Oils every 2 to 4 weeks.

The grain moths are another story. Although Cedarwood will work, you may not want your kitchen cupboards or pantry to smell of Cedarwood.

In this case, you might want to try Rosemary on the Terra Cotta Disc Diffusers or on the Lavender sachets.

The following blend should work well for both types of moths

Blend well and store in an amber bottle. Place several drops on your Terra Cotta Discor Lavender sachet. You may have to add more of this blend every week to 10 days depending on your infestation.

Several Essential Oils are good at repelling insects and moths are no different.

Other oils to try include: Lavender, Geranium , Eucalyptus Globulus, Eucalyptus Lemon, Cajeput, Clove bud, Bay Laurel, Peppermint, Patchouli, Pine needle, Sandalwood, Citronella and Lemongrass.

Please note: these Essential Oils will not kill any of the pests, just repel them. If you desire to actually destroy these pests, you should call an exterminator.

How to make your own aromatic flower water

Filed under: Home and Hearth, General Aromatherapy Articles — Administrator @ 9:51 am

Stumble it!
  • Large pot (12 to 6 quarts)
  • 1 clean brick or flat rock
  • Bunch of aromatic Herbs or flowers (approximately 1/2 gallon or 2 pounds)
  • Glass bowl that fits down inside the pot (with 1 inch clearance around all sides)
  • Water
  • Stainless steel bowl large enough to sit on top of the large pot
  • 1 chunk of ice, preferable block (fill a milk jug up and freeze, then cut it out).

To make:

Place large pot on stove. Place brick/flat stone inside.

Arrange the fresh herbal material around the brick.

Add water up to the top of the brick. This will cover the Herbs or flowers.

Place the glass bowl on top of the brick. This is where the distilled floral water will collect.

Set the stainless steel bowl on top of the pot and add large chunk of ice to the bowl.

Turn the stove burner on low. Gently simmer the herbal mixture on the lowest heat for about 3 hrs.

After 3 hrs remove the remove the cover and enjoy. The floral water will have collected in the glass bowl. This is called a steaming method.

To recap:

  • Steel bowl with ice in it (acts as the lid as well). Make sure it’s big enough to act as a lid.
  • Glass bowl on top of brick
  • Herbs covered in water in the large pot

Bottle the floral water in a capped container, use as an astringent or add to other recipes such as Face Creams, bath waters etc. Refrigerate if you are going to keep for any length of time. Once you blend into your recipes it will be fine.

Lavender Orange Diffusion

Filed under: Home and Hearth, Essential Oil Blends — Administrator @ 9:54 am

Stumble it!

The diffused aroma of Lavender and Orange Essential Oils can make your
home smell like a fragrant Orange grove or sunny Lavender field in the
south of France.

Add 10 to 15 drops of either oil to 1/4 cup of distilled water. Put the
blend in a ceramic aromatherapy lamp or simmering potpourri pot.

Suggested variations: Make the citrus aroma more complex by adding
Bergamot, Grapefruit or Lemon oils.

The Utility Room

Filed under: Home and Hearth — Administrator @ 10:21 am

Stumble it!

Everyone’s home or apartment has one of “these” rooms. And like most of us these rooms tend to become the ‘catch all’ room. You know. Hurry up and pickup before company comes – you throw everything in a box or laundry basket and stick it in the room. Only to forget you stuck it in there weeks later!

Of course, some of these utility rooms are actually a room where your furnace or cooling units are found. Or your hot water heater, water softener etc. The utility room may or may not be where your laundry facilities are located. If it is, you may still have a problem.

Some of these rooms even have shelving and storage. Maybe you keep your mop bucket and cleaning supplies in here. Sometimes these rooms can become very smelly. You know from that damp towel that was thrown in there or maybe the mop bucket didn’t get thoroughly cleaned or worse yet the cat or dog decides that it might be the perfect bathroom site if no one is around!!

In any case, you get my drift, this room is often neglected and the door kept closed for a reason – it is just not a fun room to enter. It may smell like mildew or moldy. Or worse yet some other unidentifiable odor.

With all the rain and or hot humid weather some of these rooms take on unwelcome wetness. In some homes that have basements this may be the room for the floor drain. Again, another odor producer!

This room can be made to be a little bit more pleasant by doing a few simple things. First off, try to keep things picked up off the floor and organized! Sometimes this is easier said than done but start there.

If your washing machine and dryer are here. Simply use some Essential Oils when ever you do your laundry. A few drops in the rinse cycle or a few drops on a damp cloth and tossed in the dryer. This might be all it takes to give this room a more welcome smell.

If this room is not the laundry area, but has a floor drain. Mix up your mop water, swab the deck and let the water run down into the drain. What to add to the mop bucket? If you have a mold or mildew smell, you might want to mix Tea Tree in the water. Other oils include Cinnamon, Thyme and Oregano. Of course the last two might not smell as good as the Cinnamon, but they do a good job at getting fungus under control. You might want to add Thieves blend to your cleaning bucket.

Other nice smelling oils to use are the Citrus ones – Orange and Lemon are very commonly used, as is found in many commercial cleaning products. But you might prefer, Lime, Mandarin or Bergamot. Or the evergreen scents of Pine needle , Spruce and Douglas Fir or Siberian Fir needles, Juniper and Cypress

Lavender is a nice and simple floral smell. You might want something exotic such as Ylang Ylang , or other floral smell like Geranium , Rosewood, or Palmarosa. I probably wouldn’t recommend using the expensive Essential Oils but if you want Rose, Neroli, and Jasmine could be used. I think most people would prefer to save these for other rooms other than the utility rooms!

Besides cleaning, some of the easiest Diffusers to use in this room are the “passive” type. You simply apply several drops of Essential Oils of your choice to the surface of these and let them set. They will give off the aroma for several days to weeks depending on the Essential Oils used. Some passive type Diffusers have a hanging string – simply add the Essential Oils and hang on a rod or other hanger.

Next time you walk into your utility room, it shouldn’t make you back off, That is if you put a few Essential Oils to work for you!

A Recipe for you to add to your mop bucket.

Blend these together then add to your mop bucket. This blend is great at getting rid of foul odors. When finished mopping, don’t forget to let this run into your floor drain!

Lavender Linen Water

Filed under: Home and Hearth — Administrator @ 9:50 am

Stumble it!

As far back as ancient Egyptian and Greek times, people used Lavender, Rosemary, Tansy, and other Herbs for cleaning.

They freshened their linens by placing fragrant sachets, Herbs, and flowers in drawers and closets. Homes were “sweetened” with garlands of Lavender and mint.

With this simple formula you can “sweeten” your linens, too, and if you aren’t sensitive to Essential Oils, even use it to freshen and Uplift rooms.

Sprinkle on Sheets or other other linens to freshen. Spray onto linens before ironing.

Pour Essential Oils and vodka into a bottle, cap and shake to emulsion. Mix with distilled water.

The mix will cloud, and eventually separate. Shake well before each use.

Scented Greeting Cards

Filed under: Home and Hearth — Administrator @ 8:44 am

Stumble it!

If you are like several women (and a few men) who have gotten excited about the scrapbooking craze, (I did just this past winter and spring) or maybe you just like adding the personal touch and are making your very own greeting cards.

Well, something else you can do is add a little bit of scent to them. Not much, just a drop or two.

There are a couple of ways you can do this. The simplest method is to place your card or cards in a zip lock baggie. Add a drop or two of your favorite Essential Oil to a cotton ball and place in the zip lock bag too.

Keep in this baggie for a minimum of 24 hours, longer if possible. This gives the Essential Oils time to penetrate the paper fibers.

An alternate method is to use a spray bottle and add some rubbing alcohol to this. Then add several drops of Essential Oils to this bottle. Shake well and then spray a little on the back side of your cards. The alcohol will quickly evaporate but the Essential Oil will be left behind.

DO NOT use this rubbing alcohol – Essential Oil mixture as a perfume. Rubbing alcohol is very irritating to the skin and mucous membranes. Only use this for scenting your cards. This method is best used to scent cards where you don’t have the 24 plus hours to let it set in a baggie.

As far as what Essential Oils to use? It’s totally your choice. Light refreshing citrus scents or any floral scent. Also check some of our synergy blends. Calming blend is very wonderful and would be a very welcome scent in any card. Use your imagination and have fun scenting your greeting cards.

And before I forget, don’t forget to add the envelope to the ziplock bags too!!
