New Year’s Resolution No. 1: Prevent Cancer, Use Olive Oil

Filed under: General Aromatherapy Articles, General Health Concerns — Administrator @ 9:24 am

Stumble it!

Science Daily If you want to avoid developing Cancer, then you might want to add eating more Olive Oil to your list of New Year’s resolutions. In a study to be published in the January 2007 issue of The FASEB Journal, scientists from five European countries describe how the anti-Cancer effects of Olive Oil may account for the significant difference in Cancer rates among Northern and Southern Europeans.

The authors drew this conclusion based on the outcomes of volunteers from Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, and Spain, who consumed 25 milliliters (a little less than a quarter cup) of Olive Oil every day for three weeks. During this time, the researchers examined urine samples of the subjects for specific compounds known to be waste by-products of oxidative damage to cells, a precursor to Cancer. At the beginning of the trial, the presence of these waste by-products was much higher in Northern European subjects than their Southern European counterparts. By the end of three weeks, however, the presence of this compound in Northern European subjects was substantially reduced.

“Determining the health benefits of any particular food is challenging because of it involves relatively large numbers of people over significant periods of time,” said lead investigator Henrik E. Poulsen, M.D. of Rigshospitalet, Denmark. “In our study, we overcame these challenges by measuring how Olive Oil affected the oxidation of our genes, which is closely linked to development of disease. This approach allows us to determine if Olive Oil or any other food makes a difference. Our findings must be confirmed, but every piece of evidence so far points to Olive Oil being a healthy food. By the way, it also tastes great.”

Another interesting finding in the study suggests that researchers are just beginning to unlock the mysteries of this ancient “health food.” Specifically, the researchers found evidence that the phenols in Olive Oil are not the only compounds that reduced oxidative damage. Phenols are known Antioxidant compounds that are present in a wide range of everyday foods, such as dark chocolate, red wine, tea, fruits, and vegetables. Despite reducing the level of phenols in the Olive Oil, the study’s subjects still showed that they were receiving the same level of health benefits.

“Every New Year people make resolutions that involve eating less fat to improve their health,” said Gerald Weissmann, MD, Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal. “This academically sound, practically useful study shows that what you eat is just as important as how much you eat. No wonder Plato taught wisdom in an olive grove called Academe.”

The FASEB Journal (http://www.fasebj.org) is published by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) and is consistently ranked among the top three biology journals worldwide by the Institute for Scientific Information. FASEB comprises 21 nonprofit societies with more than 80,000 members, making it the largest coalition of biomedical research associations in the United States. FASEB’s mission is to enhance the ability of biomedical and life scientists to improve—through their research—the health, well-being, and productivity of all people. FASEB serves the interests of these scientists in those areas related to public policy, facilitates coalition activities among member societies, and disseminates information on biological research through scientific conferences and publications.

Can Sleeping 8 Hours Kill You Faster?

Filed under: General Health Concerns — Administrator @ 8:42 am

Stumble it!

A recent study done by the University of California and the shocking finding of it: “People who sleep 8 hours or more have a 50% higher mortality (death) rate than people who sleep less.” Yes, it’s true that such a study was carried out..

However, does this mean that sleeping longer will create a higher chance of death and disease for you?

No. There’s no solid proof for that, but as you read about this study, and if you’ve read the two free chapters I sent you from our Powerful Sleep eBook, you might have realized the connection between less sleep, your daily energy levels, and the strength of your Immune System.

As you might notice, it’s during deep sleep that your body undergoes major physiological changes to repair your muscles, power up your Immune System and replenish your energy.

The question really isn’t “how long should I sleep?” The question really is…

“How can I optimize my sleep system to gain POWERFUL and QUALITY sleep.”

You see, there is a difference between quantity, and quality. The problem, and the challenge is that most people don’t understand sleep. They think sleep is a very basic thing that happens to us every night. I mean, think about it, we sleep, we wake up, and we magically feel refreshed, right? Because of this misunderstanding, many people live today with very out of balance sleeping systems that are deprive you of your energy, without even being aware of it.

Sleep is actually quite a complex and fascinating system. Here, briefly, are the effects of sleeping longer:

Sleeping longer than you need to will weaken your sleep system, as you reduce your prior wakefulness, exposure to sunlight, activity levels, and your body temperature at a low for too long.

As a result, your melatonin hormone levels will stay high longer, you’ll be more tired and drowsy during the day

When you sleep for long periods of time, your body temperature doesn’t rise as quickly in the morning. This results in feeling very drowsy and tired for the early part of your day. If you stay inactive, this body temperature pattern will lead to poor sleep, which will prevent you from sleeping deeply.

This weakened sleep system and inability to get proper restful and energizing sleep creates low energy levels and a weakened Immune System.

People usually sleep longer because their sleeping system is not being taken proper care of. They feel low on energy during the day, and think they need more sleep. In actuality, they feel low on energy because they have a weak sleep system, not because they’re sleeping too little.

If you’re currently sleeping around 8 to 10 hours and you feel LOW on energy during the day, it’s not because you need more sleep. YOU NEED LESS SLEEP, and MORE ENERGY from your sleep.

Sleeping less actually INCREASES the strength of your sleeping system. The problem is, most people don’t know anything about proper sleep system hygiene, or how to strengthen their inner sleep system. Only with the proper knowledge can you learn to optimize and strengthen your sleeping system, to have more energy and a higher level of health. Only once you’ve optimized your sleeping system for maximum performance can you reduce your sleep.

About The Author:

Kacper Postawski is an innovative sleep science researcher and the creator of the Powerful Sleep – Secrets of the Inner Sleep Clock system. He can show you how to reduce your sleep by up to 3 hours, create more time, and an abundance of energy in your body by sleeping LESS! Not more. He dispels the 8 hour sleep myth, tells you what most people never realize about sleep, and what the drug companies DONT WANT YOU to know. Find out more about Powerful Sleep.

Helping Overworked Muscles

Filed under: General Health Concerns, Joints, Bones, Muscles — Administrator @ 9:12 am

Stumble it!

Soon it may be time to move your college student into their dorm room or new apartment. You have a ton of boxes to move, not to mention furniture. Up and down the stairs, carrying awkward packages and boxes. What seemed like an easy task lasts many hours. Not to mention you may have a long ride to and from the destination. Then you get to move things again!!

At the end of the day you are worn out, your muscles are telling you they’ve had enough. They are tired and maybe a little tight. You deserve some time to yourself. Fill the tub and enjoy a nice hot bath with some wonderful Essential Oils. The scent they produce will make you feel better, but there are others that with the hot water will bring welcome relief to those overworked and tired muscles.

Of course not all of us have college students, but you understand what I’m saying. You have been busy doing something with your arms, legs, back and more that have made you feel tired, sore and plain old “pooped out”.

Essential Oils that are good and that help to penetrate the sore, tired and overworked muscles are Others include Eucalyptus Globulus, Peppermint, Coriander, Cypress, Marjoram, Lavender, Vetiver Ginger, Nutmeg, Pine needle, Rosemary, Thyme and Oregano. Juniper and Black Pepper.

Simply put up to 5-6 drops in the bath. Please use caution with some of these oils as they can make hot water feel hotter than normal. So please start out with 2-3 drops if you are unsure how ‘hot’ you want it!

Or if you can’t take a hot bath, add up to a total of 12-15 drops of two or three different Essential Oils to 1 ounce of a Carrier Oil. Blend well and use to massage.

A very common blend for sore, tired and overworked muscles is very easy to make. Simply put 15 drops of Peppermint and 15 drops of Eucalyptus Globulus in 2 ounces of Sweet Almond or Sunflower oil. Shake well. You’ll only need to massage a few drops of this blend into the affected area. It will make the area feel warm and cool at the same time. Very wonderful sensation and for many, gives you the welcome relief you seek.

ADHD and Diet: Is There a Link Between Sugar and Hyperactivity, and Is There Really an Effective Diet for ADHD?

Filed under: General Health Concerns — Administrator @ 2:05 pm

Stumble it!

By Tess Thompson

In the 1970’s, Dr. Ben Feingold developed what came to be known as the “Feingold Diet” after he thought he noticed a link between certain foods and hyperactivity in children. The ingredients he flagged to avoid were mostly food additives which he thought were causing allergic reactions in some of his patients, but sugar was also on the list. For years following, Dr. Feingold’s theory grew in popularity and acceptance, but the theory was based only on his patient’s testimonials, and a link between sugar and hyperactivity has yet to be proven in studies. While there is not overwhelming conclusive evidence that any particular food will cause or prevent hyperactivity, a well-balanced diet that is rich in a variety of brain-healthy foods will benefit anyone, and some preliminary studies have found certain food types to have a positive effect on children with ADHD.

Contrary to Dr. Feingold’s theory, some recent studies have shown that large amounts of sugar can have a numbing effect on children and can actually induce tiredness. These days, most doctors agree that while limited amounts of sugar are acceptable in a diet, large amounts can be harmful in a variety of ways, even if sugar has not been shown to have a particularly negative effect on ADHD and treatment of it.

One study by the George Washington University School of Medicine found that children who ate a protien-rich meal performed as well or better afterwards in school than children without ADHD. Foods that are high in protien include meat, fish, milk, yogurt, beans, peanut butter and eggs.

There is also various research, including a study done by Oxford University in London, which suggests that including Omega-3 Fatty Acids in hyperactive children’s diets will moderate their ADHD symptoms. Omega-3 Fatty Acids are often lacking in the average American diet, but can be found in salmon, mackarel, sardines and Flax Oil.

Both protiens and Omega-3 Fatty Acids should be a part of everyone’s diets, and it is important to remember to moderate your child’s intake of any one food group. In general, green vegetables, fruits, whole grains, protiens and healthy fats should all be included in your child’s daily diet.

Removing as many simple and refined carbohydrates as possible from your child’s diet could have a positive effect as well. These kinds of carbohydrates include candy, cake, white bread, potatoes, white rice, and pasta, and are broken down very quickly by the body, often causing surges and dips in energy. Instead of white bread and white rice, try substituting whole grain versions of the foods, and give your child fruit instead of cake or candy.

While it might be impossible to eliminate all of the suggested items from your child’s diet, it should be possible to moderate them in favor of healthier foods. Although there is no specific diet proven to be an effective child AHDH treatment, a healthy mix of fruits, vegetables, Omega-3 fats and protiens promotes general well-being and will also help eliminate the possibility of your child suffering from a nutritional deficiency that might be affecting his or her behavior.

ADD Stimulant Medications: Are They the Best ADD Treatments?

Filed under: General Health Concerns — Administrator @ 12:45 pm

Stumble it!

by Tess Thompson

Although there is controversy surrounding them, stimulants are still the most commonly prescribed type of medication for children with ADD and ADHD. The Drug Enforcement Agency says that stimulant drug production has increased 500 percent since 1991, and over half of the prescriptions for them are written by pediatricians. Stimulants are often effective in treating many of the symptoms of ADD —but are they the best ADD treatment for your child? Many parents are concerned about the side effects stimulants can produce and choose to investigate other options like behavioral therapy and herbal Supplements as well. When it comes to making a decision that affects your child’s health, having the facts is essential.

ADD stimulant medications work by increasing the levels of the chemicals epinephrine and norepinephrine in the brain, which helps the brain to transmit signals between nerves. This improves a child’s (or adult’s) ability to pay attention for extended periods of time. But these medications also come with a risk of mild and serious side effects. Some of the most common side effects include Headaches, upset stomach and increased blood pressure, all of which may diminish as the body adjusts after the first few weeks of treatment. Other common side effects include decreased appetite (80% of stimulant users report this), nervousness and Sleeplessness. Research has also shown that stimulants can stunt growth during treatment, but have not been proven to affect final height. Less common but more serious side effects include hallucinations and feelings of suspicion or paranoia, Tourette’s Syndrome, and suicidal thoughts.

Children on stimulants (Ritalin, Adderall and Concerta are the best-known brands) should be watched closely and their dosages should be evaluated regularly. These medications are most effective when they are administered in the correct dosage for each individual and when they are combined with additional ADD treatments like behavioral therapy and practical and emotional support. Non-stimulant drugs, such as Strattera, can also be effective, but carry a risk of similar side effects.

In light of the risks that prescription medications carry, many parents are interested in exploring an Herbal Remedy for ADD. There is more than one herb that has been shown to be an effective ADD or ADHD child treatment, and there are a variety of Natural Remedies on the market that combine many of them. Ginko Biloba, Green Oats, Brahmi, Gotu Kola and Panax Ginseng are some of the best ingredients, and the positive effects of some of them (like Ginko) can become permanent even after discontinuing use.

While stimulant medication is often successful in treating ADD, it can sometimes cause its own set of problems. Weigh the risks and the benefits carefully, and make the decision that is right for your own child. Just as each child exhibits symptoms of ADD differently, each child will react differently to medication and treatment. Patience and thorough research should lead you to a healthy solution for your child.

Diagnosing ADHD in Adults: Recognizing Adult ADHD Symptoms and Evaluating Options for Treatment

Filed under: General Health Concerns — Administrator @ 10:15 am

Stumble it!

By Tess Thompson

Although it is commonly believed to be a condition that primarily affects children, it is estimated that 12 to 15 million American adults also suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. But because child ADHD treatment and symptoms can differ slightly from adult ADHD and treatment, and because research into adult ADHD is still in its early stages, many adults do not know how to evaluate whether they are suffering from the disorder.

There is no single test that will identify ADHD, and there are no specific genetic or biological indicators that will lead to a diagnosis. Instead, it is necessary to consult a doctor who will conduct a comprehensive evaluation which will include extensive examination of past behavior, and should also include a physical exam to rule out any other possible source of the symptoms.

ADHD symptoms differ from person to person, but according to the American Psychiatric Associations Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, which is often used in ADHD research studies, they can include:

-Difficulty organizing tasks and activities
-Often losing things necessary for tasks or activities
-Often easily distracted by outside stimuli
-Not listening when spoken to directly
-Difficulty awaiting turn
-Difficulty playing or engaging in leisure activities quietly

All of the symptoms listed by the APA (and these are just a few) are meant to describe those found in children, but they can be used as a general guideline for adults as well. However, adult symptoms can manifest themselves in more subtle ways, and the hyperactivity seen in children is often less evident in adults. Instead, adults may be restless, on edge, and have trouble relaxing.

Diagnosing ADHD in adults is made more complex by the variety of conditions which can share similar symptoms. These conditions include drug or alcohol dependency, Depression and thyroid dysfunction.

Although recognizing adult ADHD symptoms can be difficult, once diagnosed, adults have many options for treatment. Stimulant drugs such as Ritalin, which are often prescribed for children, have not been approved by the FDA for treatment of adults. They may still be effective, but can potentially produce unwanted side effects. Certain Homeopathic Remedies have also been found to be extremely effective in some patients. Homeopathic ingredients such as Avina Sativa (Green Oats) and Gingo Biloba are among those which can help alleviate symptoms.

Many studies agree that medication should be just one facet of treatment. Behavioral and psychological treatment, or what is called a multimodal approach, should be considered as well. Armed with good information and a certain amount of patience, you should be able to obtain an accurate diagnosis and explore effective treatments for your condition.

Medication for Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Alternative Anxiety Disorder Treatments

Filed under: General Health Concerns — Administrator @ 10:44 am

Stumble it!

by Tess Thompson

Generalized Anxiety Disorder is the most difficult of the Anxiety disorders to diagnose because it lacks many of the more dramatic symptoms of other disorders. People with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) are not always prone to Panic Attacks, for example, and do not necessarily fear social situations. GAD usually includes subtler symptoms, such as excessive worry about things like work, family, health or money, and can be accompanied by physical symptoms that include muscle twitching, Headaches, Sweating, or gastrointestinal trouble. The National Institute of Health classifies a specific symptom of GAD as being excessive worry or Anxiety occurring more days than not for at least a six month period. Many who experience this can begin to feel frustrated and helpless, but there are a variety of successful treatments and therapy that can help restore patients to a normal life.

Individual therapy is generally recommended for people with GAD, as many do not feel comfortable discussing their symptoms in a group environment. Therapy sessions should focus on identifying stress factors, practicing relaxation techniques and breathing exercises, and helping the individual find a balance between work, family, personal time and other obligations.

Doctors occasionally prescribe medication as one of the treatments for Anxiety if the individual’s symptoms are so intense that they interfere with psychotherapy and relaxation exercises. Benzodiazepines such as diazepam (also known as Valium) and lorazepam (Xanax) are the most commonly prescribed medications for this type of disorder, but it should be noted that there is not much clinical research that has shown these types of medications to be more effective than others. Benzodiazepines can produce sedative side effects that affect performance and daily functioning, and medication for Generalized Anxiety Disorder should only be taken if absolutely necessary and always under professional supervision.

It can often also be beneficial to explore alternative Anxiety disorder treatments like herbal medications. The herb Passiflora Incarnata (Passion Flower) is regularly used to provide Anxiety relief, and as a treatment for isomnia, hyperactivity and nervous Tension. Lemon Balm is an overall nervous system restorative that can also successfuly calm symptoms, as well as Lavender – the most popular and widely used natural ingredient for treatment of Anxiety and an active ingredient in Panic Attack treatments as well.

Successful treatment of Generalized Anxiety Disorder is attainable and should generally include a much more intense focus on therapy than on prescription medication. Many who suffer from the disorder are able to overcome the symptoms purely through focusing their energy on learning how to identify stressors in their lives and regularly practicing methods for coping with them. Each person’s life is different, and so are each person’s symptoms, but individualized treatment can go a long way toward alleviating Anxiety and restoring a healthy life.
