How to make your own aromatic flower water

Filed under: Home and Hearth, General Aromatherapy Articles — Administrator @ 9:51 am

Stumble it!
  • Large pot (12 to 6 quarts)
  • 1 clean brick or flat rock
  • Bunch of aromatic Herbs or flowers (approximately 1/2 gallon or 2 pounds)
  • Glass bowl that fits down inside the pot (with 1 inch clearance around all sides)
  • Water
  • Stainless steel bowl large enough to sit on top of the large pot
  • 1 chunk of ice, preferable block (fill a milk jug up and freeze, then cut it out).

To make:

Place large pot on stove. Place brick/flat stone inside.

Arrange the fresh herbal material around the brick.

Add water up to the top of the brick. This will cover the Herbs or flowers.

Place the glass bowl on top of the brick. This is where the distilled floral water will collect.

Set the stainless steel bowl on top of the pot and add large chunk of ice to the bowl.

Turn the stove burner on low. Gently simmer the herbal mixture on the lowest heat for about 3 hrs.

After 3 hrs remove the remove the cover and enjoy. The floral water will have collected in the glass bowl. This is called a steaming method.

To recap:

  • Steel bowl with ice in it (acts as the lid as well). Make sure it’s big enough to act as a lid.
  • Glass bowl on top of brick
  • Herbs covered in water in the large pot

Bottle the floral water in a capped container, use as an astringent or add to other recipes such as Face Creams, bath waters etc. Refrigerate if you are going to keep for any length of time. Once you blend into your recipes it will be fine.

Olive Oil and Health

Filed under: General Aromatherapy Articles — Administrator @ 8:29 pm

Stumble it!

As doctors said, prevention is number one factor for good health. Speaking as simple as we can and without the use of special medical terms we must point out the following:

1. Many diseases are caused by the incontrollable receipt of food, especially food containing in excess saturated Fatty Acids (animal fats), leading to arteriosclerosis and Cardiovascular diseases.

Medical studies indicate that Mediterranean countries and specifically Greece, where Olive Oil consumption is high, suffer less Cardiovascular problems from any other country in the world where the ratio of the consumption of animal fat is high or simply the nutrition parameters are poor.

By reducing the animal fats and increasing Olive Oil in our diet we obtain a perfect combination for the prevention of such fatal diseases, like arteriosclerosis and heart attacks.

2. The problems in bile area torture millions of people on our planet. The bad function of the bile and the formation of gallstone are problems difficult to cure and most of the times medical surgery is the only solution available.

Recent medical studies proved that Olive Oil, perfectly compatible with human body needs, creates a natural tie to those liquids that result in the formation of the gallstone mitigating pain and annoyance in bile’s area.

3. Millions of people around the world suffer by stomach problems and related diseases. Very serious is the gastric ulcer disease. As it is known the use of Olive Oil in nutrition is a beneficial factor for the function of the digestive system due to its property of keeping low the “percentage of HCl” in our stomach.

Thus, the Olive Oil helps the normal function of the digestive system reducing to minimum the chances of ulcer creation and the other relative diseases, not to mention that is the best natural medicament for the fight against Constipation.

It has been also proved that the use of Olive Oil in nutrition helps to sustain:

1. Human metabolism at a good balance, body’s growth and bone growth at a good level. It is obvious that Olive Oil means good health and development for our children.

2. Good level of Vitamin E in our body. This vitamin has the property to delay the change of the cellular structure which leads to natural decadence, the people’s aging, so one of the best medicaments for delaying aging is the Olive Oil. On the other hand, as we all know, Vitamin E improves our sexual life. So one can say that Olive Oil is by itself an Aphrodisiac! Last but not least, is the unique property of Olive Oil to dissolve useful substances coming from food that cannot be absorbed by the human body.

Olive Oil is used in everyday cooking. It can be used in salads or added in the cooking process of almost any recipe. Olive Oil is the healthiest type of oil with 0% Cholesterol, rich in Vitamins against aging and perfect even for frying dishes. Olive Oil is the best nutritional gift we can offer to ourselves.

Olive Oil helps us keep good in health making our life pleasant.

Essential Oils For Fibromyalgia

Filed under: General Aromatherapy Articles, Nervous System — Administrator @ 9:28 am

Stumble it!

Fibromyalgia is a complex and baffling health condition that is reaching epidemic proportions in the United States. It is estimated that approximately 5 million Americans are suffering from this condition. Because conventional medicine has very few effective options to offer at this point, people with this condition are often branded as hypochondriacs and told that their problem is in their head.

Many people with fibromyalgia experience severe and debilitating pain that tends to move around the body. In addition, people with this condition often exhibit neurological problems that can manifest as Memory Loss, difficulty concentrating, Anxiety, and Depression. Since this condition has a neurological component, it is very convenient for these peoples symptoms to be discounted as signs of neurosis.

This condition is very real and it is horribly disabling and debilitating to those experiencing symptoms. The lack of medical support, family support, and social support can be incredibly isolating for people with this condition. This can heighten the suffering of those who are already in deep physical and mental pain.

There is a building body of research that is pointing to the likelihood that fibromyalgia is not an auto-immune disorder, but is instead caused by a number of different infectious pathogens. Some of the pathogens that may cause the symptoms of fibromyalgia are mycoplasmas and a variety of emerging bacteria that are carried by insects. These pathogens are not easily detected because they tend to reside inside our cells instead of in the bloodstream. Special testing methods are required to detect the specific pathogen that may be triggering symptoms for a person with fibromyalgia.

It also appears that the severity of symptoms a person has may be related to the number of different pathogens that the person has. A person can experience pain and other symptoms that are very resistant to conventional methods of treatment, because the pain can persist as long as the pathogenic load is not reduced. Simply suppressing symptoms such as pain does not work very well or work for very long for people with this condition.

One very effective way to manage fibromyalgia is through the use of Essential Oils. Essential Oils can help people with fibromyalgia in a number of different ways. First of all, they can relieve the pain of fibro. The pain relief people experience is frequently marked and rapid, even when the pain does not respond to heavy duty steroids or opiates. This in itself is a wonderful thing because pain can be addressed naturally, reducing the risk of unwanted side effects and reducing the risk of addiction to painkillers.

Another benefit of using Essential Oils is that the oils can have a marked effect on ones psychological and emotional state. This is partly due to the fact that the molecules that compose the oils have the capacity to cross the blood-brain barrier, and positively effect the mind. The effects of the oils can range from relieving Anxiety and improving sleep, to increasing Concentration and relieving Depression. The use of Essential Oils can relieve many of the neuropsychiatric and emotional problems related to this condition that are most disconcerting to the patient and to the people surrounding her or him.

The Essential Oils are also very effective at improving the Immune System response. This improves the bodys ability to fight of any infectious processes that have taken a hold.

Many Essential Oils are also Antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral, and are active against mycoplasmas. The oils directly kill the pathogens that may be disrupting the persons health and well-being. People with fibromyalgia often respond to treatment with Essential Oils very rapidly because the oils rapidly reduce the pathogenic load that is present in the body. Each Essential Oil is often active against a broad spectrum of pathogens, and when these oils are used in combination with each other, their ability to deal with a wide range of bacteria, fungi, and viruses is enhanced.

Essential Oil therapy can result in increased energy, significant pain reduction, improved Concentration, better memory, increased metabolism, better sleep, reduced Anxiety, reduced Depression, better range of motion, improved blood Circulation, and a significantly better quality of life.

Because the pathogens that may be responsible for fibromyalgia are often quite resistant to treatment, the Essential Oils need to be used at a higher Concentration than in traditional aromatherapy. Some of the oils that I have seen people respond well to include Eucalyptus, Frankincense, Lemon, and Lavender.

People with fibromyalgia often shy away from aromatherapy as an option because many of them are chemically sensitive and have strong reactions to fragrances. The Essential Oils are natural plant extracts that bear no resemblance to toxic chemical perfumes. When people with fibromyalgia have a temporary increase in symptoms, such as headache, when exposed to an Essential Oil, it is a Detoxification response and a healing crisis response, not a result of chemical sensitivity. The difference is that the person may feel discomfort temporarily, but after that they feel a significant improvement. On the other hand, when the person is exposed to a synthetic chemical fragrance, the person will spiral downward, because the chemical has increased, not decreased, the toxic load in the body.

Essential Oils are potent multifaceted natural medicinals that are incredibly beneficial when addressing the complexity and diversity of symptoms that people with fibromyalgia experience. These powerful substances may offer hope to people who may have been hopeless in the face of their baffling and cunning illness, if they are open to a natural alternative.

Aromatherapy Travel Insurance

Filed under: General Aromatherapy Articles — Administrator @ 8:43 am

Stumble it!

Going on a trip is usually thought of as a wonderful experience, one that you and your family may have planned and looked forward to for some time. To have the most fun – to get the most out of the experience – it’s important that you and your loved ones have the means to overcome those little ailments and discomforts that can make the experience range from mildly unpleasant to downright unbearable.

How can we include a little ‘Trip Insurance’ to our already overstuffed carry-ons or mini-vans? Aromatherapy has an answer with some readily-available Essential Oils.

Motion Sickness, bug bites, digestive difficulties, and general travel weariness – to name a few – are common discomforts experienced when venturing away from home. A small collection of inexpensive Essential Oils can provide great relief from these amusement-threatening ailments.

‘Treatment’ with these oils is simple – ranging from inhaling a little oil from a tissue, to adding to a bath, to drinking a drop with a warm cup of water. And, thankfully, relief often comes quickly because of the oils’ powerful properties and compatibility with our own bodies.

Peppermint and Ginger Essential Oils – Tummy Troubles and Clearing the Head We’ll begin with ‘getting there’ – any trip starts with traveling. By car, boat, plane, or otherwise, Motion Sickness commonly effects many people, particularly children. This can easily make the ‘traveling’ portion of your experience absolutely no fun. Enter Peppermint Essential Oil.

Peppermint has long been used to calm uneasy stomachs, and is easily used. One drop (it is strong!) in a cup of warm water, sweetened if you like, can be sipped before and during the voyage. For the fussy ones, a drop can be added to a small amount of honey and taken from a spoon for the same effect.

Ginger Essential Oil is also known for it’s calming of upset stomachs – a little inhaled from a tissue or diluted in a Carrier Oil and rubbed on the abdomen can bring relief. One can also add a drop of Ginger to warm water and drink as a strong tea – this may be effective for some food-related stomach issues as well, particularly when combined with the abdomen massage method.

Peppermint can also be uplifting to the weary driver or passenger – a drop or two placed on tissues in the car or near your seat will release the aroma into your surroundings. Be careful with this oil however, as getting it on sensitive areas of the skin (directly under the nose, and certainly near the eyes) can cause irritation. Tissues with the oil on it should not touch these areas directly.

Lavender Oil – the Great Soother

Lavender has been called ‘a medicine chest in a bottle’ due to its wide range of effects. The aroma of Lavender is uplifting and relaxing, useful for stress in congested airports or crowded highways. Breathing this very safe Essential Oil is effective for adults and children alike – inhaling drops from a tissue directly, or from one’s placed in your surroundings can help you and your companions be at ease.

Plus Thyme, Tea Tree and Eucalyptus – Cleansing and Keeping Bugs and Bites at Bay

Lavender Essential Oil is also an effective wound-healer because of it’s anti-inflammatory, mild Antibacterial, and skin-regenerative actions. It can be used directly in case of burns, mixed 50:50 with Tea Tree and put on band aids to prevent infection, or blended with Thyme Linalol and Eucalyptus (2:4:2) and added to a bowl of water for an effective disinfectant wash. Lavender is very useful for treating bites and stings – just place a little ‘neat’ (undiluted) on the affected area.

This versatile oil is also a component of an insect repellent blend comprised of equal parts of Lavender, Thyme Linalol, and Peppermint, and a double-dose of Lemongrass Essential Oil. A drop or more placed on tissue or cloth about your room can keep the insects out of your space; 3 drops of this blend per teaspoon of Carrier Oil can be regularly applied to the skin – or you may mix a similar amount into any lotion you may have.

Lavender can be used in combination with Geranium, Chamomile, Peppermint and Eucalyptus oils in relieving the effects of jet-lag. Getting out of this weary state as quickly as possible makes any trip more enjoyable. This requires getting yourself and companions in-synch with local time, having good rest at night and perhaps a gentle lift in the mornings and throughout the day.

To get yourself into the swing of local time, relax and be ready for bed with equal parts of Lavender and Geranium Essential OilsChamomile may also be used in place of the Geranium, and works especially well for soothing children (if they are irritable for ANY reason).

Add a few drops to a bath or use in a massage oil. For a morning eye-opener, do the same using equal amounts of Peppermint and Eucalyptus. You will find these useful at other times when you need a little Clarity and lightening-up.

Lemon Oil – the Purifier

Lemon also has some wonderfully diverse uses. It is effective as an Antibacterial, but not so strong as to be an irritant. Adding several drops per quart to your drinking water will help purify it, and the water can act as a disinfectant to be used in washing your fruits and vegetables the need for this certainly depends on your location, but it not a bad idea whenever bacterial contamination may be a possibility.

Further, regularly drinking water with added Lemon oil can gently stimulate the lymphatic and digestive systems, helping alleviate that sluggish feeling that often accompanies extended plane and car travel.

Eucalyptus Oil – For Keeping Cool and Cold Relief

Eucalyptus – the Narrow Leaf variety is a favorite – has a great range of uses as well. It can cool the body when too hot, and protect it when too cold. It is found in almost all formulas used to relieve congestion, can support Circulation, and bring lightness to a travel-weary head.

Eucalyptus oil can be used like Peppermint to Uplift and invigorate during long intervals in an automobile. It can be added to a cool bath or used on a cold compress in cases of heat exhaustion and heat stroke (accompanied by, of course, copious amounts of water and electrolytes!), and used in a similar manner to reduce fever.

Eucalyptus oil may be blended with Geranium as a massage oil (3 drops Eucalyptus and 2 drops Geranium per teaspoon of Carrier Oil) to relieve heat cramps. For congestion relief, to a drawn bath, add 1 drop Eucalyptus, 3 drops Lemon, 2 drops Thyme, and 2 drops Tea Tree – soak and breathe deeply – or simply add a few drops to a steaming bowl of water and inhale.

These are just a few examples of ways to make your travel experiences more enjoyable with aromatherapy. With a little effort, you can expand your knowledge of these oils, discovering further uses, and find other oils that work well for your particular needs.

These Essential Oils are readily available, and fairly inexpensive – though caution should be used when buying oils, as some can be adulterated, and others are mass-produced with techniques that may limit their therapeutic benefits. The more pleasant and ‘well rounded’ an oil’s aroma, generally the higher the quality. Your nose will know! And as with any aromatherapy application, start slowly – Essential Oils deserve a healthy respect.

Aromatherapy For Sciatica

Filed under: Oil Blends For Health, General Aromatherapy Articles, Nervous System — Administrator @ 8:39 am

Stumble it!

If you have ever experienced Sciatica you know what a pain it can be, both literally and physically.

The pain and discomfort though are just the symptoms of an underlying problem. Sciatica is really the irritation and inflammation of the large nerve that runs in your lower back (sacrum) into your leg. You have one on each side of your body.

When, some how, this large nerve gets irritated or pinched you can have anywhere from a little “twinge”, all the way to pain so severe it will stop you in your tracks for several days.

One common cause for men especially is sitting on their wallet. Those beautiful pieces of folded leather have taken more than one man to their knees. For women, you may have sat crooked or funny on a chair, not even realizing you are giving yourself a pain in the back.

More serious causes would be disc or lower back vertebrae involvement. If you are unsure what is causing your Sciatica, see your physician.

Sciatica always seems to get worse in the evening. At least I think so. Especially when you are trying to fall asleep.

Things that may help when you are being bothered is to put alternating cold and hot packs on the area. Start with just cold packs. Hold in place over the sore area for no more than 20 minutes. Repeat this every 2 hours. The cold will help to reduce swelling and give relieve from the pain too. But do not leave cold/ice packs directly on this area for more 20 minutes at a time, you could risk freezing your skin and more than 20 minutes actually does no good.

For some people after the first day, it might feel good to alternate with heat. Again, no more than 20 minutes at a time and continue to alternate every couple hours with ice.

Also if you have someone that can give you a good but light back rub in this area and down into your affected leg will not only feel good but can help relax the tense muscles you may develop because of the discomfort.

Essential Oils that are good and that help to penetrate the tense and Sore Muscles are Juniper and Black Pepper. Others include Lavender, Eucalyptus Globulus, Ginger, Nutmeg, Pine needle, Rosemary, Peppermint, Thyme and Oregano. Several of these may also help to relieve inflammation of the nerve involved.

Add up to a total of 12-15 drops of two or three different Essential Oils to 1 ounce of a Carrier Oil. Blend well and use to massage.

This blend may feel very good and give you the relief you need.

Blend all together in a bottle. Shake well. Then use for massage.

Hope these suggestions help. We have used the above methods when our Sciatic Nerve has been inflammed. If you start early with the ice/cold packs you will have conquered half the battle. Keep the inflammation down and you will feel better quickly.

Essential Oils How To Use - Aromatherapy Skin Care

Filed under: General Aromatherapy Articles, Skincare — Administrator @ 8:43 am

Stumble it!

First, please remember that Essential Oils should never be applied neat (undiluted) to your skin. There are absolutely NO exceptions to this! This includes the soles of your feet or palms of your hands. When using oils neat for inhalation purposes please exercise care and dispense your oils on a tissue or cotton ball for direct inhalation.

AROMATHERAPY Skin Care METHODS FOR FACIAL CLEANSING AND CELLULAR RENEWAL:

FACIAL STEAM ~ As part of a deep cleansing routine disperse 3 to 5 drops of Essential Oil in a teaspoon of milk or honey and mix into a pint of steaming hot water.

Pour this “HOT” mixture into a stainless steel mixing bowl and lean with your face forward, over the bowl being sure to cover your head with a towel to catch the steam on your face.

Breath in the steam and relax, enjoying your facial steam until the waters cool.

Or you may use your oils in a facial steamer.

PLEASE NOTE: Essential Oils are not water soluble you must use a dispersant when adding them to a facial steam or bath. Water may cause the oils to penetrate your system more quickly or cause irritation to sensitive or damaged skin, i.e. blemishes, sores or rash.

FACIAL MASQUE ~ Add 2-3 drops of Essential Oils to moistened Clay, honey, mashed Avocado, or egg white.

Dampen your face lightly and apply your facial masque. Leave on for 10-15 minutes until your masque begins to dry and harden slightly.

Wash your facial masque thoroughly off your face. Your face will look and feel more toned, fresh and hydrated. Repeat once a week for healthy and toned skin!

FACIAL Oil Blend ~ Add up to 10 drops of Essential Oil blend, depending upon your skin type, to one ounce of your favorite Carrier Oil. I prefer Certified Organic Filtered and Unscented Jojoba oil which is most like your skin’s own natural sebum.

Frankincense is good for all skin types. German Chamomile is excellent for sensitive skin. Rose is wonderful for mature skin, as is Frankincense.

Apply your facial Oil Blend lightly to target areas for intensive therapy to nourish and heal facial skin.

SKIN BRUSHING ~ Invigorates your skin, and stimulates your lymphatic system.

Apply 1 drop of (Lavender, Frankincense, Rose or Geranium – all are excellent for Skin Care) in 1 Tablespoon of honey and apply mixture to your natural bristle skin brush and brush your skin.

Make sure your gentle, yet brisk brush strokes are upward, toward your heart. Brush your entire body from the tips of your toes and fingers to the top of your shoulders. Include the front and back sides of your body as you breathe deeply.

Enjoy the wonderful tingling sensations dancing across your skin. Always be sure to work from your extremities upwards, toward your heart. Gently, yet briskly, cover your entire body, omitting your face and neck in the process of this cleansing and uplifting ritual. Skin brushing is especially effective just before you shower.

Properly administered Essential Oils are a natural, safe and effective way to enhance your health and well-being and can produce satisfying results where other methods have failed. Please consult with your physician regarding your health concerns.

Aromatherapy and Hair Growth

Filed under: General Aromatherapy Articles, Oil Blends For Beauty, Hair Care — Administrator @ 12:00 pm

Stumble it!

Hair Growth. A subject that is near and dear to the hearts of many. If you’ve never been one with fine hair or watched your once thick tresses dwindle in number you may never understand the feelings of dread and frustration that can accompany the loss of your hair.

Growing up my mom always told me “A woman’s hair is her shining glory” and it’s stuck with me all these years. She was just trying to get me past that pre- teen “I-don’t-need-to-wash-my-hair-it’s-only-been- a-week-or-so” phase but even now, all these years later it’s something that rings in my ears each time I break out the shampoo (thankfully, it’s now more than once a week!).

While bald can certainly be beautiful, not all of us are ready, willing nor do we want to show off our shiny pates! For those of us who are desperately clinging to the hairs we still have left on our heads and would like to encourage more to stick around for a longer period of time, this month’s recipes have been created.

So now you’re wondering, “Can Essential Oils really work to help grow hair?” Well, a study was performed by Scottish researchers who had half their patients massage a blend of Essential Oils in Jojoba oil into their scalps before shampooing. The other half of the study group only got Jojoba oil to massage on in the same manner. After seven months 44% of the patients using Essential Oils had significant improvement in their Hair Growth. The control group who only used the Jojoba oil showed a 15% improvement. Check out our recipe section to find out what they used!

Scottish Hair Growth Formula

Massage this blend into your scalp and allow it to sit for 15-20 minutes before shampooing off. Better yet, do it before bed and shampoo off in the morning!

  • 10 drops Rosemary (Rosemarinus officianalis)
  • 10 drops Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia)
  • 6 drops Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica)
  • 4 drops Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)

Add oils to Jojoba in a glass or plastic bottle, shake well and massage 2 tsp into scalp. Shampoo off. Dry and style hair as usual.

Healthy Hair and Scalp Final Rinse

Keep this blend handy each time you shampoo!

  • 5 drops Rosemary (Rosemarinus officianalis)
  • 3 drops Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia)
  • 2 drops Sage (Salvia lavandulaefolia)
  • 1 litre water

Add Essential Oils to your container of water and shake well. Pour over head working into scalp and through the ends of your hair as a final rinse. Do not rinse out.

Dry Scalp Massage oil

Feels like your scalp had a trip to the spa!

Gently warm Jojoba oil (double boiler or microwave) and add Essential Oil. Stir (or shake if in sealed container) gently to blend. Massage into clean scalp and work oil through to the ends of the hair. Wrap hair in plastic wrap and a warm towel for 20 minutes. The heat will allow the oil to better penetrate the hair shaft. Shampoo out as normal afterwards.

Aromatherapy and Cancer

Filed under: General Aromatherapy Articles — Administrator @ 12:57 pm

Stumble it!

Cancer is a dreaded disease that appears to survive and continue to thrive despite all the money and research that the allopathic medical system throws its way. This is due in part to Western medicine’s intent to treat the disease, rather than acknowledge and encourage alternative therapies.

There is much more money to be made through the pushing of pills and toxic treatments than there is condoning a healthy lifestyle with proper nutritional counselling, vitamin and nutritional therapy, exercise, stress management and Alternative Health therapies (like aromatherapy) when needed.

What Western medicine refuses to see is that our bodies are made up of so much more than just physical things. Not only are we physical bodies, we are spirit, we are energy, we are a holistic unit that must operate on balance. It is when a body operates out of balance that the groundwork for diseases like Cancer and many others can take hold.

It is beyond the scope of this newsletter to discuss the many other more natural treatments that are available to those who face the battle of their lives. In researching this piece, I went to Google and typed in “Essential Oils+Cancer treatment” and was boggled at the information contained there.

Essential Oils can be used during conventional allopathic treatments, though some physicians may prefer you do not. Ultimately the choice must be yours. Check out our recipe section for more ideas. Some oils that have been used on the skin before radiation treatments are Niaouli, Tea Tree, Cajaput and Lavender (blended into all natural Aloe Vera taken straight from the plant is best as it is healing and won’t leave the skin greasy).

If you or someone you love is dealing with Cancer try not to lose faith. Sometimes faith and a positive attitude can make the difference between beating the disease or allowing it to beat you.

Below is a list of Essential Oils which are considered safe (with no known contra-indications) to use externally and by diffusing in palliative care. Use in a normal dilution.

This Oil Blend for a friend who was battling breast Cancer. She used it dutifully in her bath, in a massage oil and through inhalation and she found that emotionally and physically it helped her get through her treatment.

This blend can be added to a Carrier Oil (in a 1% dilution), diffused directly into the air or utilized in a bath (no more than 5 drops per tub if you are undergoing radiation or Chemotherapy treatment).
