This is somewhat different from our normal questions and answers and involves quite a long answer. It was raised in another part of this blog as a question but I thought that it warranted publishing it as a stand alone item. Over the years we have had many questions from dedicated supplement users such as Mr Baumgartner who are doing there best to keep up with science and technology to ensure that they and their loved ones get the best possible protection.

This gentleman is one of these and so I thought that those readers of this blog who are big supplement users may enjoy reading this.

Question: from Mr Baumgartner

I am 86 and my wife is 93. We are both in reasonably good health except that my wife needs to use a walker and 24/7 attention as well in order to avoid a fall.

For some time I have been taking Forward Plus but sharing it with my wife. To make up for taking only half the daily recommended dose I add nearly 50 supplements for myself and about half that number for my wife. I try to keep track of the optimum quantities recommended by various doctors but it is a very time consuming balancing act. I buy supplements mostly from Swanson.

He recently recommended Ubiquinol as a product superior to COQ10. So I switched to this new product. Longvinex claims their Resveratrol product is superior, so I buy it. I am most likely overdoing things but I consider it as buying insurance.

I would be glad to switch to your product if you can convince me that this is all I really need. Here is the list:

Answer: from Warren Matthews of Xtend-Life

Quite a bit to cover here, but I will do my best.

Just a couple of quick points before I start going through your list.

Ubiquinol is actually CoQ10. It is in a form which the developers claim is more bio-available. The evidence supports that claim. We considered using it in Cardio-Klenz but opted not to as we were able to get adequate bio-availability by combining the fermented form of CoQ10 with Phosphatidyl Choline and a special form of B2 (Riboflavin-5-phosphate) and B6 (Pyridoxal- 5-phosphate). These forms of B2 and B6 are a lot more expensive (about 10 times) that the ‘normal forms of B2 and B6.

For similar costs we felt that we would achieve similar bio-availability as the Ubiquinol but with some added benefits. The body can only use so much CoQ10 in a day and the dose rate that we have in Cardio-Klenz is adequate given our delivery system. Like most nutrients more is not necessarily better.

With regard to Longvinex there is no doubt that this is an excellent Resveratrol product and superior to most but it is no superior to the natural trans-reservatrol that we use both in Cardio-Klenz and Total Balance. The claim to fame that Longevinex has is that the reservatrol is not exposed to oxygen which causes it to degrade quickly. This is a problem in normal capsules so they use a capsule which does not allow oxygen to penetrate.

However, we use a system which is even better than that because not only is the reservatrol sealed in with other nutrients and oxygen cannot get to it, but it is also enteric coated. This means that it is also protected from stomach acids as it passes through the stomach and is released in the upper intestine where it is absorbed through the intestinal lining and into the blood stream.

This is not the case with the Longevinex product which is very expensive for what it is.

It you were taking the full dose of Cardio-Klenz and Total Balance per day you would be getting 82mgs a day of the natural Trans-Reservatrol at 50% concentration which is also higher than most supplements.

OK…now to your list! What I will do first is, where practical, comment beside each of the numbers of your list.

* 1 Policosanol 5 mg (DHEA dropped 1/1/07) – Cardio-Klenz contains 20mgs of Policosanol and Total Balance 10mgs so you are well covered there.
* 2 Trimethylgl.(TMG) 500mg – Cardio-Klenz contains 100mgs and Total Balance 70mgs.
* 3 Vitamin B6 50mg pyridoxine (vision)-vs. homocyst. – CK and TB contain 10mgs each of these for a total of 20mgs but the Cardio-Klenz uses the much more effective version ofPyridoxal- 5-phosphate.
* 4 Vitamin B12 500mcg * 3-5 Homocystein formula cyanocobalamin-vs. homocysteine. – This is a high dose. We only use 10mcg in TB and 50mcg in CK
* 5 Folic Acid 800mcg cell repair-hair-vs. homocysteine – We use 300mcg in both TB and CK for a total of 600mcg which is adequate.
* 6 Trimethylgl.(TMG) 1000mg vs. homocysteine -vs. depression? – I referred to this earlier. No benefit to have this extra dose.
* 7 N-Acetyl Cysteine 600 mg pre-gluthathione-white blood cells – We have 100mgs of this in CK and 35mgs in TB. One of the roles of NAC is as a precursor for Glutathione. This is because Glutathione is not practical for use in supplements generally because it is severely affected by stomach acid and the molecule is too big to pass through the intestinal wall for any glutathione that makes it as far as the upper intestine. HOWEVER, we have overcome this problem by doing two things. One is that the glutathione which is contained in both TB and CK is encased in the enteric coated tablet and is protected from the stomach acid and released in the upper intestine. And two, is that we use a special from of L-Glutathione (reduced). The reduced means that the size of the Glutathione molecules has been made smaller to that they can easily pass through the intestinal walls. We include 110mgs mgs of this special form of L-Glutathione in TB and 17.5mgs in CK. This is a much more reliable and effective way of ensuring that your body gets adequate Glutathione.
* 8 Selenium 200mcg prostate +retina nutrient – We used a total of 524mcgs of L-Selenomethionine in TB and CK to provide 210mcgs of elemental selenium
* 9 Bromelain 200mg saw palm., pygeum, zinc, herbs – We use 100mgs of Bromelain in CK and 30mgs in TB, BUT, we use a combination of other sophisticated enzymes to improve the efficacy of the other nutrients. TB Men’s Plus contains Saw Palmetto, and other herbs for prostate health as well as Lycopene, beta- sitosterol and additional zinc which follows a specific metabolic pathway to benefit the prostate.
* 10 L-Arginine 500mg Raynaud’s/high BP/fat-muscle – TB and CK combined contains 330mgs of L-Arginine.
* 11 Levothyroxin .05 mg Prescript. Thyroid
* 12 Quercetin+Vit.C 500/1.4g circul./periph.art./anti-inflamm. – TB contains 150mgs of Quercetin and TB and CK combined contain 290mgs of Vitamin C as a mixture of Calcium Ascorbate and Ascorbyl Palmitate. You should try to avoid to high a doses of Vitamin C via supplements unless you have a specific condition where it is needed.
* 13
* 14 Vit.E/gamma toc 200iu/200mg natural mixed tocopherols-vs. LDL – We use a natural mixed tocopherol vitamin E of 200IU for TB and CK combined BUT, in addition we use another 10mgs of Tocotrienols from Palm Oil in TB which is a lot more potent than tocopherols and complement them.
* 15 Codliver Oil Vit.A/D3 2500/270 – * 16 L-Carnitine 250 mg 250 mg burns fat-weight control-energy – We use 100mgs of Acetyl-l-Carnitine in TB but have substituted it with other nutrients in CK because it is now considered a drug in some countries including Canada.
* 17 Resveratrol 20 mg – We use 32mgs in TB and 50mgs in CK
* 18 Grape Extract 60mg source of resveratrol – We use 100mgs of Mahonia Grape extract which is the most potent form in TB, and 250mgs in CK.
* 19 Grapeseed Extr. 50 mg immune system – We use 200mgs of Grapeseed extract in CK
* 20 Pantoth. Acid B5 200 mg hair color & quantity – We use 90mgs combined with CK and TB
* 21 Biotin 1000 mcg hair color & quantity – We use 500mcg of the 99% pure Biotin in TB
* 22 Ginkgo Biloba 100mg blood flow to capillar.-vs. leg pain – We use a total of 140mgs in TB and CK combined.
* 23 Alpha Lipoic Acid 300mg antiox.water&fat sol. – We use 150mgs with CK and TB combined.
* 24 Zinc Picolinate 22mg cholest./energy prod. – We use 50mgs of Zinc Orotate in CK, 50mgs of Zinc Aspartate in TB Men’s Plus and 10mgs of Zinc Citrate. Remember that the percentage of elemental zinc is quite low in these salts. For example, 10mgs of zinc citrate only contains 3.21mgs of elemental zinc.
* 25 Ca-Mg-Vit.D 1/.5/400 bones/immune system – We have 100mgs of Calcium citrate, 70mgs of Magnesium citrate and 300IU’s of natural vitamin D3 in TB and 350mgs of Magnesium Taurinate in CK. We have an additional product called Bone-Protec for those people who wish to boost their levels of calcium. This may be good for your wife.
* 26 Avapro (Procardia) Prescript. 150mg angio tension blocker
* 27 Green Tea X 2×500 antioxidant vs. cancer – We have a 100mgs of Green tea extract in TB and 200mgs in CK. Both of these products are using a high potency form with 80% catechins which is the most important active and 98% polyphenols.
* 28 Taurine 500 mg eye health (retina nutrient) – CK contains 200mgs of L-Taurine
* 29 Hawthorn 2x565mg blood & oxygen to heart – TB contains 100mgs of Hawthorn extract and CK also contains 100mgs
* 30 Beta 1,3 Glucan 212mg immune system-white blood cells – TB contains 40mgs of Beta 1, 3 Glucan along with other immune enhancing polysaccarides.
* 31 L-Carnosine 500mg anti-ox/chelation – TB contains 100mgs of L-Carnosine. It is important to note that l-Carnosine is affected by stomach acid so the 100mgs in TB is actually equivalent to a much higher amount.
* 32 Vitamin C 500mg – We covered Vitamin C earlier. Be careful not to get to much.
* 33 Q-Gel(COQ10) 200mg heart energy – We just use 40mgs in CK but include the correct combination of precursors in TB
* 34 Potassium 600mg 99mg (rec4.7g) balance salt-vs. blood pressure – We use 130mgs of Potassium Citrate in CK and 20mgs in TB.
* 35 L-Lysine 500 mg Ca absorption- excretes LDL – We use 200mgs of L-Lysine in CK
* 36 Multi-Mineral – We include a full spectrum of minerals in TB plus trace minerals not generally found in a multi-mineral tablet.
* 37 Lutein/Bilberry 6/20mg vision – We use 5mgs of Lutein and 50mgs of Bilberry in TB plus other eye nutrients.
* 38 Niaspan Prescript. 500mg raise HDL
* 39 Salmon Oil 1000mg +300mg (Dr. Whitaker)
* 40 Ca/Magn.Vit.D 1g/500/400iu +400 Vit.D + 300 Dr. W. – We covered this in * 25
* 41
* 42
* 43 Copper 2 mg – We include adequate copper in TB. It is easy to overdose on Copper and it is primarily a co-factor and should not be taken alone.
* 44 Aspirin 81 mg blood thinner -I would question the desirability of this given the amount of gingko that you are taking and particularly if you take CK which includes additional enzymes
* 45 Flomax Prescript. .4 mg Prostate
* 46 (Lipitor) 10 mg dropped 8/10/05
* 47 .
* 48 Vit. D3 1000 iu bones, immune system -This extra may be beneficial but there is a better way which I will cover in the notes below.
* 49 D-Ribose 5g 5g 5g

SUMMARY

I can certainly see that you are doing your best to cover all possible angles and I understand what you want to achieve.
You have got things covered pretty well but there are a number of drawbacks when you are taking a lot of individual products. Firstly there is the risk of overdosing on some and not having enough on others. You also lose the benefits of synergy which can increase the efficacy of individual ingredients by as much as fifteen fold.

Added to this you are taking a lot of extra excipients and fillers when you have so many supplements.

As you will have noticed I have made my comments on the individual ingredients based on you combining both our Total Balance Men’s Plus and our Cardio-Klenz. I have ignored the prescription drugs component.

In my opinion you could eliminate all of the supplements except the D-Ribose and replace them with the full daily dose of Cardio-Klenz and Total Balance Men’s Plus. I have ignored the Omega 3 fish oil which you must continue whether it is our Omega 3 or the one you currently use.

You may choose to continue with a half dose of your current CoQ10. I don’t think that is necessary but it would not do you any harm to have extra if you wished to.

Apart from the increased effectiveness of the ingredients by combining them in a synergistic mix as in TB and CK you have the added benefit of improving their efficacy by them being in an enteric coated tablet.

But, the benefits don’t stop there.

Here is a list of the nutrients that you are currently not getting from your current regime! These extra nutrients have proven clinical data supporting their use for eye health, heart and circulation health, and as cancer preventatives and for good general health as well as helping repair DNA.

* Adenosine Triphosphate
* Beta-Carotene
* Hesperidin
* Inostitol
* PABA
* Phosphatidyl Choline
* Piperine
* Diindolyl Methane (DIM)
* Dimethylamino Ethanol (DMAE)
* Dimethyl Glycine (DMG)
* Isoflavones (40%)
* L-Methionine
* L-Proline
* L-Tyrosine
* L-Valine
* Myricetin
* N-Acetyl D-Glucosamine
* Ribonucleic Acid (RNA)
* Aloe Vera Polysaccharides 200:1
* Tea Polysaccharides (20%)
* Black Cumin Extract
* Ginger Extract
* Gotu Kola
* Myrth Extract (guggulipid)
* Olive Leaf Extract
* Tumeric Extract
* Nattokinase
* Serrapeptidase
* Butchers Broom extract
* Grape Skin Extract
* Red Clover Extract
* Terminalia Arjuna Extract
* Zizyphus Jujube Extract
* MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)
* Vinpocetine
* Choline Bitartrate
* Vitamin K2

No doubt I have left some things out but I have tried to cover the main points. The bottom line is that I have no reservations at all that if you were to modify your regime to use Total Balance and Cardio-Klenz as your supplement foundation along of course with an Omega 3 that you would be significantly better off health wise, and also financially compared to your current regime.

One final comment and that relates to Vitamin D. Try to have yourself and your wife get as much exposure to sunlight as possible as close to midday as possible. Not enough to get burnt but enough on a regular basis to really give yourself a Vitamin D burst. Many of the organs can produce the activated form of Vitamin D from the sun but not from supplements.

I will be writing an article on this subject shortly and expanding on the benefits of this and why the general information about sunlight is scientifically wrong and how that statment can be proven.
