Acupressure’s Potent Points: a Guide to Self-Care for Common Ailments Reviews

Review by Susan Nelson:

In a nutshell, Acupressure’s Potent Points: a Guide to Self-Care for Common Ailments shows the reader how they can use acupressure on themselves to relieve stress related problems.

So what exactly is acupressure? Well, its an ancient healing art that uses the fingers to press on key points on the surface of the skin- which in turn stimulates the body’s natural self-curing abilities. More specifically, when these points are pressed on for several minutes, they release muscular tension and promote the circulation of blood and the body’s life force to aid healing. If at this point you’re wondering how acupressure differs from ACUPUNCTURE, well, there’s not much difference- the same points are used for both, its’s just that one uses needles and the other uses your fingers.

And just what makes these acupressure points or “potent points” so special? Well, as the book explains, they are places on the skin that are especially sensitive to bioelectrical impulses in the body and conduct these impulses readily. So, by stimulating these points with your fingers, you’re triggering the release of endorphins (your body’s natural pain killers) which blocks the pain. This in turn increases the flow of blood and oxygen to the affected area which promotes healing and causes the muscles to relax.

Neat huh? This kind of info is covered in Part I of the book. Part II, which is about 85% of the book, covers the acupressure points themselves and the techniques for the specific ailments- and boy do they cover the ailments! Just about everything you can imagine is covered from acne to fainting to shoulder tension. Pictures are a plenty and show you the exact areas to press on- it’s a pretty easy process and the book makes it simple to do. Also of note is that there are two ways to use the book, you can look up a problem by system (i.e. digestive system, immune system, etc.) via a handy chart, or simply look a problem up by flipping around as the ailments are covered in alphabetical order.

The book ends with two appendices, one being a nice point location chart, and the other a summary of the potent points. All-in-all its a pretty clear and easy to use book that should help many put an end to their stress-related aches and pains. Other pain books that might be of interest include The 5-Minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution for readers suffering from plantar fasciitis.

Review by J. Eure:

This is a very useful reference for anyone interested in playing an active part in healing themselves. Just look up your complaint (headache, nausea, etc) and the book provides several points that may help, along with a description of the points, their names and what they are specifically helpful for. The book also provides detailed instructions and photos to help you get the proper position of the points. Very easy to use and understand.

The Acupressure Atlas Reviews

Review by K. bloch:

This book is well organized and gives a good introduction to the background and philosophy of Chinese medicine if you are interested. The photos are clear and easy to follow. The large format of the book helps beginners to learn. I used some of the techniques for headaches and it worked– no aspirin necessary. I also tried it for my teenage son to calm him when he could not fall asleep; he fell asleep within minutes. Keep this reference book near your medicine cabinet and reach for it instead of the usual drugs. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Review by Midwest Book Review:

An oversized format to this title might prove a shelving challenge to some collections but compensates by making for a great display item in THE ACUPRESSURE ATLAS, pairing step-by-step color photos of technique with anatomy pointers and therapy keys. From massage points to healing pressure potentials, THE ACUPRESSURE ATLAS offers far more insights on home how-to basic health care than most titles and an emphasis on visuals which makes for infallible applications.

Acupressure for Emotional Healing: A Self-Care Guide for Trauma, Stress, & Common Emotional Imbalances

Increased stress and traumatic events in our lives have resulted in many millions of people who suffer from insomnia, nightmares, anxiety attacks, depression, and tension headaches. ACUPRESSURE FOR EMOTIONAL HEALING offers relief at your fingertips, quickly and safely, for a wide range of emotional problems. It explains how emotional distress becomes lodged in the body as muscular tension and blocked energy, and shows how acupressure can relieve not just the resulting physical symptoms, but also their emotional source–often without the need for extensive talk therapy or medication.

Acupressure stimulates the same points used in acupuncture, but instead of needles, firm finger pressure is used on the surface of the skin. The pressure releases neurochemicals called endorphins that relieve pain. As in acupuncture, specific pressure points are connected with internal organs and energy pathways in the body (called meridians) that regulate the flow of electrical energy to all systems. Unlike acupuncture, acupressure can be used safely by anyone, with only the hands as equipment.

ACUPRESSURE FOR EMOTIONAL HEALING offers a comprehensive A-Z guide to emotional ailments (from abandonment to worry and obsessive thinking), with fully-illustrated instruction on dozens of precise acupressure point locations and how to activate them, combined with yogic breathing, stretching, and movement routines. Case histories from the authors’ practice further illuminate each condition and the path to emotional balance and healing. Most routines can be used independently for self-care and on-the-spot relief. There are also sections on how to use the techniques to help others, with appropriate safeguards.

Acupressure Guide: Alleviate Headaches, Neck and Joint Pain, Anxiety Attacks, and Other Ailments Reviews

Review by Karmit O.:

I have read a number of acupressure books before. Dr. Stein’s book is the easiest to use. Finally, I can understand the location of acupoints, duration of massage, and direction of force. The illustrations are black and white but very clear.

Review by S. Lemberg:

I am not generally the type to resort to alternative medicine but found this book extremely helpful. Several months ago I began having migrane headaches and consulted several doctors who prescribed painkillers. That didn’t help, plus I really didn’t want to be taking such medication full time. Then I came across this book, which was recommended by a friend. At first I was sceptical but my wife insisted that I try the techniques and I eventually saw improvement. Although the headaches sometimes recurr, I now know the techniques for managing them and don’t feel the need for full time medication. Overall, I’d suggest this book to others who want to try to avoid doctor visits and tons of unnecessary medicine.

Acupressure SCAT Motion-Aid Wrist Straps W/Magnets in Tan from AME Reviews

Review by Zaika’s Hubby:

I am prone to motion sickness, whether it be car, plane, boat or train. I usually use dramamine but it makes me so sluggish and drowsy. My first experience with the SCAT wrist straps was on a train. Normally all the bouncing around would make my stomach do flip flops but with the straps fitted around the right wrist, I showed no signs of nausea. My brain was sensing the movement but the stomach was calm. My next experience was on an airplane flying home in some turbulent weather. Although it was a scary experience, my stomach did not get the nausea signals from the brain at all. This is a remarkable product. I always keep one with me at all times, cause you never know when you may need it. It takes a few minutes for the effect to start working and once taken off, everything goes back to normal shortly after that.

Review by Noelle:

I was skeptical at first about ordering these because I’ve been getting car sick since I was a little girl, but when I realized it was accupressure, I had a good feeling it would work. I truly have a new found respect for the acupunture and accupressure methods. I have tried them both and I am a believer. Any whoo, no more motion sickness and it actually gives you a calm euphoric feeling. I am very pleased.

Acupressure for Lovers: Secrets of Touch for Increasing Intimacy Reviews

Review by :

Very well done. With sensitive material that could easily be presented either too pornographically or too clinically, Michael Reed Gach, a Californian acupressure practitioner and teacher, strikes the perfect balance. Contents include: acupressure guidelines, stimulating sexual energy, building intimacy, preparing for love, arousing a woman or a man, and acupressure techniques for mutual stimulation, oral sex, and intercourse. Also includes chapters on Thai Massage, “Acupressure for the Afterglow” and acupressure for sexual problems and healing. The author is generous with information and presents it with clarity. The book includes diagrams and photos, also presented sensitively and clearly. The subject is treated with the tenderness it deserves and yet is very specific in its suggested applications of this age-old technique. Highly recommended.

Review by D. Parker:

I am amazed at the effectiveness of the techniques described in this book… I am enjoying every minute! Have had a hard time putting it dowm. Highly recommend!
