Do you know the difference between the flu and the stomach flu?

While “stomach flu” is a popular term, it isn’t a correct medical diagnosis. These are actually two different diagnosis caused by two different types of irritants. The correct term for the stomach flu is gastroenteritis. Gastro meaning stomach, enter relating to the intestines and itis meaning inflammation.

People who are suffering from gastroenteritis, or the stomach flu, will have irritation or inflammation of the stomach and intestines, the gastrointestinal tract. Gastroenteritis can be caused by either virus, bacteria or a parasite and does not necessarily need to be caused by an infectious process. Triggers for gastroenteritis can include lactose intolerance or other allergic reactions to specific food types.

On the other hand, the flu is caused by a virus known as influenza. The flu often mimics the same symptoms as a respiratory cold except that it begins much more quickly with symptoms of fatigue, fever and respiratory congestion. Individuals who suffer from an upper respiratory infection, also known as the common cold, may also suffer from a low grade fever but individuals who are experiencing the flu will generally have a fever greater than 100 Fahrenheit.

Epilepsy is a fairly common medical condition, which affects the victim neurologically, and results in seizures. This is not just a one time event. Seizures can occur at any time and without warning. An epileptic seizure occurs when the brain is experiencing electrical difficulty. This is triggered by certain cells and neurons sending out the wrong signals. There is a big difference between a one time seizure and epilepsy.

A seizure is not epilepsy but, a result of epilepsy, or a symptom. If you, or a person you know, has had a seizure this does not necessarily mean that epilepsy is the cause. A head injury can trigger a one time seizure. In this example, the person would not be diagnosed with epilepsy and can go on living their life normally. It is still important to receive a thorough medical evaluation anytime that one has a seizure.

The brief surge of electrical activity, in the brain, can last anywhere from moments to several minutes. The symptoms of a seizure can range from loss of consciousness to convulsions. Seizures are classified in a way that is based on the symptoms that appear and which areas of the brain that are affected.

Is a cure for diabetes mellitus now a reality?

Diabetes is a metabolic disease that affects over 17 million people in the United States alone. The condition creates complications that range from blindness to kidney failure and cardiovascular disease and stroke.

Researchers, scammers, holistic medicine physicians and well meaning doctors have all claimed to find a cure for diabetes at one time or another. The reality is that with good lifestyle choices, nutritional intake and exercise most people who experience pre-diabetic symptoms may go through the rest of their lives without ever suffering diabetes.

However, many who have Type 2 diabetes are not able to make the necessary changes and choices that negate their life-long poor choices. And those who suffer from Type 1 diabetes experience the condition because the cells that produce insulin have completely shut down.

Finding a cure for diabetes requires that the cure also addresses the reason behind the diabetes. So, the jury is now out on whether some of the promising research has indeed found a cure for diabetes. A cure would mean less of a financial burden on both families and insurance companies as well as better health for millions of Americans and people around the world.

Swimmer’s ear is a condition that is commonly seen during the summer and in kids. It is an infection of the outer ear that can lead to problems deeper inside the ear over time. Here are some helpful hints to prevent swimmer’s ear and enjoy your fun in the sun and surf.

Swimmer’s ear doesn’t just happen to swimmers. They are the most affected but it can happen whenever the conditions are right for bacteria to grow out of control in the outer ear. The bacteria in question are helpful in small amounts. They are present naturally on the skin of the body.

When moisture gets in the ear canal, an infection can develop because the bacteria multiply. Swimmer’s ear also occurs in the presence of cuts in the ear, various skin conditions like eczema and seborrhea and hair chemicals. But, you can take preventative measures to keep the infection from beginning.
