How to Fight Inflammation and Pain Naturally

Article courtesy of Lose The Back Pain

If you have ever suffered from any type of ache or pain, you know that it can be life changing in many ways.

Many people are forced to abandon the sports and activities they love. For some, even simple everyday activities like getting out of bed and walking become near impossible.

Unfortunately, most doctors simply write prescription after prescription for drugs that have been proven to have side effects often worse than the pain they are supposed to be helping.

The good news is, nature has it’s own solutions to all of the ailments most of us suffer from… and pain is no different. In fact, the list of natural remedies that have been proven to provide safe and effective pain relief is long, but before I share with you these little-known natural healers, it’s important that you understand pain and what causes it.

What is Pain?

Pain is your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong, much like a fever. And just like with a fever, most people simply mask the pain instead of dealing with the underlying cause of the problem.

Natural Remedies for Cystitis

If the discomfort of cystitis (bladder infection) increases, or there is blood or pus when you urinate, see a doctor immediately.

Drink lots of water and chamomile tea at the first signs of cystitis.

Use one Garlic capsule as a suppository placed up the rectum.

Make an aromatic wash with 3 drops each of Bergamot and Tea Tree in 17 fl oz (500 ml) of boiled, cooled water. Use this frequently as a local wash, making sure that you swab the opening of the urethra.

Make a hot compress using Bergramot, Chamomile and Sandalwood and place it over the abdomen, repeating as the compress cools.

To help prevent cystitis, take regular baths with Tea Tree, Lavender, Bergamot and Roman Chamomile.

Menstrual Cramps and Fluid Retention

To comfort the pain and discomfort of menstrual cramps, use repeated hot compresses of Marjoram and Clary Sage over the abdomen. As you lie back and rest, drink a cup of chamomile tea. A warm aromatic bath with Lavender and Rose soothes and comforts before and during menstruation.

To ease fluid retention, which products a general bloated feeling and may include specific symptoms of tender breasts and a swollen abdomen, take warm aromatic baths with the following mixture: 3 drops each of Lavender and Clary Sage mixed into a little evening primrose oil.

You can also mix 2 drops each of Lavender, Roman Chamomile and Clary Sage into 1 tsp (5 ml) each of evening primrose oil and Jojoba Oil, and gently massage your abdomen in a clockwise direction.

To help prevent fluid retention and other menstrual problems, visit an aromatherapist for a course of lymphatic drainage massage. Then try to have a monthly lymphatic drainage massage a few days before your period is due.

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when tendons or ligaments in the wrist
become enlarged, often from inflammation, after being aggravated. The
narrowed tunnel of bones and ligaments in the wrist pinches the
nerves that reach the fingers and the muscles at the base of the
thumb. The first symptoms usually appear at night. Symptoms range
from a burning, tingling numbness in the fingers, especially the
thumb and the index and middle fingers, to difficulty gripping or
making a fist, to dropping things.

Some cases of carpal tunnel syndrome are due to work-related
acumulative trauma of the wrist. Diseases or conditions that
predispose to the development of carpal tunnel syndrome include
pregnancy, diabetes, and obesity.

Serotonin Diet: Food That Gives You a Lift

Serotonin, a naturally occurring chemical in our bodies, has a significant effect on mood and appetite. Most of the antidepressant medications prescribed today work by raising serotonin levels in the brain. Some foods are really rich in serotonin, and can raise your spirits.

Some people may be better off using prescription antidepressants, but diet can help mood problems. There are significant links between what we put in our bodies and how we feel emotionally. For example, a diet that’s very rich in tryptophan and tyrosine boost serotonin because they are large chain amino acids that are precursors to serotonin.

Below are foods that may help raise serotonin levels in your brain. However, if you are depressed, anxious or very stressed, make a point of talking with your doctor about how you’re feeling.

High Serotonin Concentration

* Bananas
* Kiwis
* Pineapples
* Plantains
* Plums
* Tomatoes

Moderate Serotonin Concentration

* Avocados
* Black Olives
* Broccoli
Cantaloupes
* Cauliflower
* Dates
* Eggplants
* Figs
* Grapefruits
* Honeydew melons
* Spinach

Herbs for the Adrenal Glands

Alternative medicine abounds in ideas about the adrenal glands and remedies for their ills. The two adrenals sit astride the kidneys, deep in the back of the abdomen. Each of these glands has two parts, a cortex or outer part, and a medulla or central portion.

Herbs for the Adrenal Cortex

Herbal medicines can have an impact on the adrenal cortex in a variety of ways. Most important is the direct effect of plants that are rich in a specific variety of saponin. One such plant, licorice, is proving to be a controversial remedy because of its effects upon the adrenal cortex. Aldosterone, the substance secreted by the cortex, is part of a hormonal homeostatic complex that regulates electrolyte balance in the blood as well as the volume of urine passed.

When licorice is eaten or taken in great excess, it has a direct impact upon aldosterone, leading to potassium depletion. This is a very rare occurrence, but pharmacology books have pointed to it insistently to demonstrate the dangers of herbal medicine. Yet, British patients with Addison’s disease have benefited greatly from this herb. However, to be completely safe, licorice should be avoided in overactivity; it is indicated in underactivity.

Prostate massage treatment - a massage or let your partner do it

There have been some very interesting observations regarding of prostate enlargement, a natural process where the male gland grows in size and causes urinary problems. The incidence and severity of prostate enlargement is much lower in Brazil, especially in the regions where saw palmetto is grown. This led to an understanding that saw palmetto is one of the most effective herbs for inhibiting prostate enlargement.

Similarly, Asian men have a much lower rate of prostate enlargement and cancer than American men. There are a lot of reasons attributed to this peculiar situation. It is a fact that traditional and ancient therapies have used various herbs and concoctions to alleviate the symptoms caused by this male condition since ages.

There is a mention of prostate enlargement and inflammation in ancient Indian texts, the basis of traditional Indian therapy - Ayurveda. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has an effective therapy known as acupressure for treating numerous ailments including prostate problems. And in Japanese traditional families wives often perform prostate massage to help their husbands to maintain prostate health.

Facial Expressions May Affect Your Mood So… Say Cheese!

Can you believe that something as simple as flexing your facial muscles into a smile can provide instant health benefits? Numerous studies show a connection between facial expressions and mood.

Even when frowns are prevented from occurring with a cosmetic procedure, studies have concluded that the inability to frown actually improved a subject’s mood and decreased symptoms of depression.

Dr. Eric Finzi, a medical director and president of Chevy Chase Cosmetic Center in Chevy Chase, Md., and Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery Associates in Greenbelt, Md., theorizes that the reason for this is the constant feedback going on between facial expression muscles and the brain.

A paper published by the Journal of Dermatologic Surgery in 2006 reported on a small pilot study conducted by Dr. Eric Finzi which found nine of 10 depressed patients recovered from their symptoms after receiving a cosmetic procedure which paralyzed the muscles between the eyebrows. Shockingly, this was nearly twice the success rate of anti-depressants.

Does this mean that cosmetic procedures should be the new cure for depression? Absolutely not! But it does indicate that there are ways other than with prescription medications to improve and balance your moods and stress levels, such as with herbal and homeopathic remedies.

Lumbar stenosis treatment

Stenosis is caused, in many cases, due to the natural ageing process, which narrows the spinal cord. Just as lime builds up in your garden hose, the bones and ligaments of the spinal facet joints thicken and form arches that push into the spinal canal with advancing age.

The spinal canal contains nerves that include the sciatic nerve, which provides sensation and support to the legs. A reduced diameter of the canal leads to compression of the nerves and causes sciatica.

Stenosis may occur anywhere in the different regions of the spinal column. Low back pain caused by a gradual deterioration of the vertebrae and the consequent narrowing of the lumbosacral spine is a prominent cause of morbidity and disability.

Stenosis of the lumbar spinal canal causes an arthritic pain of the lower back and legs that seems to be present over a large region and is often disabling. Severe lumbar stenosis may result in claudication – a disability to walking due to crippling legs or feet.

Medical treatment of lumbar stenosis involves:

* Bed rest.
* Pain management.
* Physical therapies including exercise and yoga.
* Sciatica alternative remedies like homoeopathy, acupuncture and herbal therapy.
