Shingles…to take or not take the new Vaccine?

October 13th, 2007

Question: from Terry

I read with great interest your reply to the question about Vitamin D preventing Cancer. Specifically your reply: “In other words it is not a matter of taking mega doses of Vitamin D but rather ensuring that you don’t have a deficiency. Remember that most cancers are due to a nutrient deficiency!”

Can this same principle apply to other conditions?

The current issue of Prevention Magazine has ’suggestions/advertisements’ to be vaccinated (when you turn 60 years old) with Zostavax to prevent shingles and postherpetic Neuralgia. Apparently, “1 in 4 people who have had chickenpox eventually develops the blistering rash of shingles - caused when the chickenpox virus, Varicella zoster” is reactivated. 40% will go on to suffer what’s been described as the worst kind of pain imaginable. Called postherpetic Neuralgia (PHN) it is so agonizing that it’s been known to lead some people to suicide.”

Back to my question, can a nutritional deficiency be a factor here, and if not, is this ’scare tactics’ by pharmaceuticals?

Anti-fungal Essential Oils

October 13th, 2007

As with any information presented on this page, please use all proper precautions in using these powerful aromatic essences, and consult a medical practitioner when in doubt. We are in no way responsible for misuse of the information presented herein.

Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)

Most frequently recommended for the treatment of athletes foot, Candida, in fact any sort of fungus. Tea Tree oil is an effective all round anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal oil. Many authorities recommend using Tea Tree neat (undiluted) but much recent evidence shows that it is actually more effective in a 2% dilution. I personally consider it much too harsh to use undiluted on the skin.

Tea Tree is the usually suggested aromatherapy remedy for Ringworm. If I were trying to treat this fungal infection I’d go with a weak (ie 12 drops/ounce of carrier) dilution of Tea Tree in Jojoba Oil.

Myrrh Essential Oil Commiphora myrrha

Did You Know… You Can Whiten Your Teeth with Strawberries?

October 13th, 2007

Tooth whitening is the leading dental procedure requested bypeople under the age of 20 and between the ages of 30 and 50. In the last 10 years alone, this procedure has exploded by 300 percent, according to The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

Perhaps one reason for the explosion has to do with the vast numbers of people having their teeth whitened, which then sets a new standard for how “normal” teeth are supposed to look. Even if your teeth are a healthy shade, they may look yellow when compared to the pearly whites of celebrities and, now, the average person walking down the street. The problem with most current tooth-whitening products, both over-the-counter versions and thoseperformed in your dentist’s office, is that they use hydrogen peroxide to whiten your teeth.

This is not your best choice because peroxide can cause your teeth to become sensitive. Additionally, hydrogen peroxide forms radical intermediates that can damage and destroy your gums and nerves.
