The Pentacle of Healing

Healing is a journey from illenss to wellness. Helaing is rebalancing and renewing. Healing is transformational and multidimensional.

The multidimensionality of healing is also known as holistic. Holsitic healing recognizes that restoring well being includes more than treating phsyical disease. When there is physical illness, other dimensions of self and life also are impacted, inclduing mood, thinking, activity, and soul.

As a preistess, psychotherapist, and counselor, I serve as both a catalyst and a guide in doing healing wiork with others. Drawing from my background in Wiccan spirituality and Paganism, and my Psychology studies and practive over the past thirty-five years, I have developed a holistic framework that I call the Pentacle of Healing. The Pentacle is a five-pointed interlaced Pentagram within a Circle. Each of the five points of the Pentagram represetns a dimension of healing, and the Circle represents the harmonious integration and functioning of these dimensions.

I use the Pentacle of Helaing framework for assessment as well as for considering treatment options. I share here some of the questions to ask in working with each healing dimension. I also include several examples of healing modalities that might be used in treating problems in each.


The Physical dimension of Healing, associated with the Element of Earth, pertains to both the physical body and the physical environment. How well does your physical body function? How clean is it? How balanced and aligned is your posture? What foods, beverages, medicines, and other things do you consume? What Lotions, Soaps, fragrances, and other substances do you put on or around your body? How clean and confortable are the clothes that you wear? What toxins are you exposed to at home, in your neighborhood, at work, and other places you frequent? How strong is your Immune System? Physical healing modalities inlcude improving nutrition, taking medicines, getting Vaccinations, internal and external cleansing of the mody, massage, decluttering living and working spaces, and reducing or eliminating exposure to toxins.


The Mental dimension of Healing, associated with the element of Air, pertains to the mind and cognition. How well is your mind functioning? How good is your memory? How well do you listen, Focus attention, and absorb information? How healthy is your self-talk? What do take into your mind? What studies are you engaged in? What kinds of things do you read and view in print, online, and in the mass media? What do you talk about to others? Mental healing modalities include journaling, cousneling, repeating affirmations, reading thought-provoking works, sloving and engaging in other types of mental exercises, and Education.


The Behavioral dimension of Healing, associated with the element of Fire, pertains to actions and lifestyle. How healthy is your lifestyle? What habits are enhancing your well being? What haboits are destructive? How well do you manage Stress? What is your balance between work and play? How much time do you spend with others and how much do you spend alone? What is the quality of time you have for yourself? What quanitity and quality of sleep do you get each night? Behavioral healing modalities include walking, stretching, dancing, swimming, other types of Exercise, time management, creative _expression, travel, hobbies, career development, volunteer service, and Stress management exercises.


The Emotional dimension of Healing, associated with the Element of Water, pertains to feelings and relationships. How emotionally fit and mature are you? How healthy are your relationships with others? How happy are you? Whjat upsets you? How do you process anger and frustration? How do you deal with sadness and loss? What do you fear? How honest are you with others? What do you trust, feel close to, and call on in times of need? Who calls on you? What are doing to improve you emotional and social well being? Emotional healing modalities include gestalt therapy, rational-emotive therapy, Music Therapy, art therapy, laugh therapy, other expressive forms of psychotherapy, peer counseling, emotive journaling, and support groups.


The Spiritual dimension of Healing, assoicated with the Element of Spirit, pertains to the soul and sacred forces. How healthy is your spiritual life? What is religion, spirituality, or philosophy and how does it help you? What form(s) of the Divine do you honor and connect with? What type of spiritual practices do you engage in and how often? What affiliations fo you have with the spiritual communities, groups and paths? What places are sacred to you and how often do you visit? How do you work with intuition and spiritual guidance in your life? In what ways are you developing spiritually? Spiitual healing modalities inlcude meditaiton, ritual, prayer, altar work, sacred site pilgrimages, spiritual studies, vision questions, divination, dream exploration, and spiritual healing work.

The Circle that surrounds and connects the five points of the Pentagram in this model signifies an integrative approach to hesaling and wellness. It is important that approaches selected for various dimesntions of healing, as well as healer and health care professionals guiding those approaches, work in harmony with the one needing healing, in order to restor ebalance to each dimenstion as well as the whole.

Herbal Remedies For Cough and Bronchitis

If you are one of those people who get rained on a little and get bogged down by the Flu the next day, you are probably sick of having coughs and Colds and sick of taking medicine over and over again. Sometimes, it is good to know that there are a lot of Herbal Remedies that are available, effective, easy to use and can replace the mundane cough syrup and escape its side effects.

Bronchitis is a serious medical condition. If you present the symptoms for this, please consult with your physician as soon as possible. These herbal treatments are here to help but are not guaranteed cures for conditions as serious as bronchitis.


There are a lot of traditional and herbal treatments for coughs and some are indeed stranger than others. The more common ones that are still widely used today involve using honey and lemon. Other Herbs include Garlic, onions, Lavender, Thyme, linseed, Nettle and dock. Still others are cabbage, carrots, turnips, Comfrey, Rosemary, balm, Glycerin and Peppermint. Among all the Herbs, Eucalyptus is still the most popular cure.

There are many recommended herbal drinks to treat a cough. One remedy is boiling Coltsfoot in water with Garlic and brown sugar. An infusion made of Coltsfoot leaves sweetened with honey is also said to do the trick. Another treatment is syrup made by boiling Coltsfoot leaves with equal amounts of Plantain leaves and honey. An herbal drink for coughs was based on a mix of dried Sage, honey and vinegar. Another was based also on dried Sage but with brown sugar and Ginger in water. Another cure was formed by mixing and heating butter, vinegar and honey; also was mixing hart shorn, Almond Oil, Hyssop, sugar and water. Another cure for coughs is an infusion made of Hyssop, Mullein, ground Coriander and Marshmallow leaves.

The older traditional cures were stranger. One of the folk cures concerns boring a hole into a lemon and filling the hole with honey. The lemon is then roasted wherein the juices are collected and fed to the patient. A stranger remedy involved boring a hole into it and the hole was filled with brown sugar which is then left to sit overnight. The next day, the juices that were collected are given to the patient.

Some of the older cures are harder to come by. One example of these cures is a mix of the juices of leeks and fresh breast milk of a nursing mother. Another less palatable remedy involved boiling two or three snails in barley water. You may not want to go through all this trouble for a cough.


Bronchitis is the inflammation of the bronchioles of the lungs and is a lot more serious than cough. Actually, the cough is reduced to one of the symptoms of bronchitis. Although most cases require the treatment of antibiotics, there are still a lot of Herbal Remedies to help heal and relieve the symptoms of bronchitis.

The more common remedies for bronchitis are Eucalyptus, Garlic, honey, Ginger, Cinnamon and tea. Herbs like bugle, butterbur, Caraway, Angelica, Borage, Coltsfoot and Comfrey are known to help in the relief of the symptoms. Other Herbs such as chickweed, chervil, fenugreek, Fennel, ground ivy, liquorices, Myrrh, madder, knotgrass and Marjoram are also effective. Mullein, Parsley, Plantain, onion, Sage and primrose, Thyme, white horehound, watercress, speedwell and savory are also utilized in the treatment of bronchitis.

Ginger and Cinnamon are most often found on the spice racks in the kitchen. For most people, they are merely Spices used to add flavor and fragrance to our food and drinks. What most people ignore is the fact that these Spices are well-known for their medicinal properties.


Ginger has many surprising applications outside the kitchen. Its medicinal prowess extends from the treatment of common ailments to the remedy of Frigidity in women and is even a rather potent Aphrodisiac. The Ginger root was used in Chinese medicine that dates as far back as two thousand years. It was only in the 1600s that it arrived in Europe. Originally, Ginger wasn’t taken internally as a cure, but instead as a paste made with water. The Ginger paste was applied onto the forehead of the patient and this was thought to lower blood pressure. Later on, Ginger was taken internally to relieve High Blood Pressure.

Even before, Ginger is famous for its benefits to the circulatory system because it stimulates the heart and assists in circulation. Aside from lowering blood pressure, it has also been known to prevent excessive blood clotting in the system which could lead to stroke. In cases of menstrual problems like a delayed period, Ginger is said to promote menstrual flow. In this area, Ginger is also thought to aid in Fertility in women and Impotence in men.

Ginger paste and Ginger that is taken internally relieves the discomforts caused by Respiratory Problems such as Colds and Flu by acting as an expectorant. It can also break fevers by promoting perspiration. Ginger is particularly popular in the remedy of certain symptoms of Digestive Disorders. It is used in the prevention of Nausea, the relief of diarrhea and flatulence and helps in the general digestive process.

Ginger is also said to have the ability to hinder the ageing process. When Ginger is applied externally, as in liniments, it is able to ease the pain in joints and of lumbago and also in neuralgia. The pain from toothache is also said to be relieved by chewing a piece of Ginger.


Cinnamon is known for its unique flavor and aroma. We usually use Cinnamon in small amounts as an added flavor in our food and drinks. Unknown to most people is the fact that Cinnamon can help relieve the discomforts that come with common conditions such as wounds and Muscle Pain.

Cinnamon is a good treatment from the ordinary coughs and Colds to catarrh and respiratory infections, especially in cases where there is Fever present. Cinnamon is also used to remedy muscle and joint Pains such as Arthritis. A lot of common digestive annoyances are relieved by Cinnamon, including Colic, Nausea, flatulence and diarrhea. It is also believed to be able to control heavy menstrual bleeding, nose bleeding and other forms of slight to moderate bleeding in the body.

When applied externally, Cinnamon is used as an antiseptic to treat and prevent infection in stings, wounds, abrasions and other skin problems. Another common external application is in the treatment of head lice infestation.

  • 12×12 wool flannel cloth, when folded to 4 thicknesses
  • Castor Oil
  • Heating Pad or hot water bottle
  • Plastic wrap
  • Towel


Saturate the cloth in Castor Oil so that it is wet but not dripping. Lie down and apply the cloth to the abdomen making sure to cover the areas of the liver (just under the ribs on the right side) and the cecum (near the hip bone on the lower right side). Place the plastic wrap over the cloth to protect other items from getting soiled with the Castor Oil. Set the Heating Pad on top at a temperature that you can tolerate well. Wrap the towel around your waist to keep the pack securely in place.

Get comfortable and Relax for 1 to 1½ hours. Repeat this treatment as needed. I recommend:

  • 3 - 4 times a week for general Constipation.
  • Nightly use for periods of minor abdominal discomfort.

Soak up the Sun? Yes! Ten Tips and Fun Ideas

Researchers now think that we need 15 to 20 minutes of unprotected sun every day for vital health and well-being. And there is something about becoming mindful of the life-promoting energy of the sun that connects us with that force for growth in a very powerful way.

So here is a cornucopia of sun-drenched ideas for getting the most out of your sun experience. Try one or try a few–you too can be a sun-worshipper!

  1. Find a pleasant place in the sun and just sit there. If you wear glasses, remove them so you can absorb the full spectrum. Feel the warmth on your skin: after 15 or 20 minutes, sniff your arm and enjoy the sun-warmed scent. If you’re afraid you may Fall Asleep, take a timer with you!

  2. Go for a sunny walk around your neighborhood, or explore someplace new. Either way, you get sun and Exercise, too.

  3. Take your lunch break in the sun.

  4. Make a pitcher of Sun Tea: Put 1 teabag (black, green, or herbal) per pint of water in a glass container, and leave outside in the sun to steep for an hour. Add sweetener and fresh mint, if you like, and drink a glass slowly during your Sun Minutes.

  5. Play with Prisms: Buy a prism, go outside, and make rainbows. Give some thought to the wonder of bright light being made up of all those beautiful, saturated colors.

  6. This fascinating favorite never fails to amaze and amuse: using a magnifying glass, capture sunlight in a small focused beam, shining it on a piece of paper or a dry leaf. See how quickly it will begin to burn. Be careful: the sun is powerful!

  7. If you can’t get outside enough, or in the winter, use full-spectrum lighting. Eight hours in this lighting only amounts to about 15 minutes of UV radiation. Sunlight offers all the same color spectrum as the chakras: red, Orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, Violet and white (the 8th chakra). We need a balance of all those colors to feel whole.

  8. Do some gardening. If you don’t have the space for a big garden, plant something in a terra cotta pot and tend it: it can be very soothing and meditative to pluck off dead flower-heads or pull out weeds, to water and nurture your plants. The sunlight you absorb while you do this is an added benefit.

  9. Read the daily newspaper in the sun. Look at your mail there, too!

  10. If you are physically challenged, open a window facing the sun and sit beside it for your 20 minutes. A friend of Annie’s takes time every morning to soak in some sun, before coffee, breakfast, or anything else. This practice is similar to the Native American tradition of making a prayer to the sunrise first thing every morning, and then again at sunset.

Aromatherapy Through The Ages

The term aromatherapy is one that has only been used since the 20th century but the practice of it has been around since almost the beginning of mankind. The extraction and use of Essential Oils we know has been around at least one thousand years, with the Chinese being at the forefront of using plants and its oils for medical purposes. Even further back than this, the ancient Egyptians used extracted oils from aromatic plants to treat ailments and more significantly they also used oils like of Cedar wood, Clove, Cinnamon, Nutmeg and Myrrh for embalming the dead.

The ancient Greeks also practiced aromatherapy where the fumigation of oils was carried out both for physical and spiritual healing. It should be noted however that during this period the process of distilling Essential Oils was limited more to the extraction of floral water and not the oils themselves. It was not until around 1200 AD that the distillation of Essential Oils was possible due to the invention of coiled cooling pipes.

Thus in the centuries that followed Essential Oils started to become more popular and more types of plants started to have their oils extracted through the distillation process which were then sold in apocathery shops during the middle ages with more and more oils introduced as their popularity increased.

More recently Essential Oils of plants have been studied more closely for their medicinal qualities so much so that some components have been isolated to create medicines. However it is the synthetic man made chemical medicines produced in latter century and their sometime harmful side effects that have in recent times propelled aromatherapy and the use of Essential Oils as a more natural and preferable Alternative Health substitute which has stood the test of time.
