Who Was Dr. Samuel Christian Frederic Hahnemann, M.D.?

April 29th, 2006

Samuel Hahnemann (1755 - 1843) was the founder of Homoeopathy. He established the fundamental principles of the science and art of Homoeopathy.

He is called the Father of Experimental Pharmacology because he was the first physician to prepare medicines in a specialized way; proving them on healthy human beings, to determine how the medicines acted to cure diseases. Before Hahnemann, medicines were given on speculative indications, mainly on the basis of authority without experimental verification.

Hahnemann discovered the remedial powers of drugs and inert substances such as gold, platinum, silica, vegetable charcoal, lycopodium, etc. By preparing the medicines through potentization, these inert and insoluble substances became soluble in alcohol or water and were charged with medicinal force.

Dr. Hahnemann espoused the law of cure known as “Similia Similibus Curentur”, or “Like Cures Like”. This means that a remedy that produces symptoms in a healthy person will cure those same symptoms when manifested by a person in a diseased state. This law of cure has been verified by millions of homoeopaths all over the world since the time of Hahnemann.

Hahnemann discovered the primary and secondary actions of remedies. The primary action results from the first encounter between the vital force and the external agent, and the secondary action is a result of the vital force’s reaction to the symptoms of that primary encounter. This discovery led him to the curative powers of poisonous substances.

Dr. Hahnemann described the different aspects of ‘acute’ and ‘chronic’ diseases. Acute diseases are transitory; they have a beginning and an end, whereas the chronic diseases are co-existent with life. Either they are present in a manifest or a latent state. From this work came the chronic miasms of Psora, Syphilis, and Sycosis.

Dr. Hahnemann was the progenitor of several modern medical approaches. Deeming the treatment of insane patients to be cruel and harmful, he advised a humane treatment for the insane. He cured many insane patients with Homeopathy, and became famous for this success.

Dr. Hahnemann was quick to recognize poor hygiene as a contributory cause to the spread of disease. His success with cholera and typhoid Fever was in part due to this recognition. Hahnemann also emphasized the importance of nursing, diet, bed rest, and isolation of patients during epidemic diseases. Hahnemann described ‘Noxious’ principles as the precursors of certain disease states.

Hahnemann’s three major publications illumine the development of Homeopathy. In the Organon of Medicine (revised six times), we see the fundamentals laid out. Materia Medica Pura records the exact symptoms of the remedy provings. In his book, The Chronic Diseases, Their Peculiar Nature and Their Homoeopathic Cure, he showed us how the natural diseases become chronic in nature when suppressed by improper treatment.

Dr. Hahnemann treated thousands of difficult and chronic cases that defied the best care from allopaths all over Europe. Thus, he became so famous that physicians from Europe and America came to him for coaching in the new science and art of healing, called Homoeopathy.

The Sense of Smell and Emotional Response

April 28th, 2006

Smell is a specialised chemical sense. It is interesting to note that the olfactory cells are the only place in the human body where the central Nervous system is in direct contact with the external environment. When we detect the smell of something, there is a direct contact between the molecules of scent and our own receptors.

The message regarding the molecule of scent is passed along the olfactory nerve to the nerve centre in the brain. The neurons of the olfactory nerve, control the inner responses, i.e. emotions and memories, as well as the body’s hormones. There is no generally accepted classification of the basic types of smells recognized by man. The sense of smell can be very sensitive, sensing minute concentrations of some substances in the air.

There is considerable individual variation in the activity of the sense of smell. Adaption can occur to pleasant as well as nasty smells, due to changes in both the receptors and the central connections.

It is important to remember that the inhalation of the aromas of Essential Oils also has a profound and instantaneous effect on us today. The limbic lobe of the brain receives information about smell via the olfactory nerve and this part of the brain is also concerned with our emotional memory. The limbic system produces the autonomic responses that accompany emotional states and behaviours.

Particular scents can trigger strong, emotional responses which are pleasant or unpleasant according to our own individual experience. Which smells do you find repellent? What are your favourite scents? Perhaps the perfume of a favourite blossom or newly-mown grass, the scents of the garden after light summer rain, the smell of your favourite meal cooking or the perfume worn by a friend, the special scent of a baby or small child.

When oils are inhaled, micro-molecules of Essential Oils travel through the nasal passages to the limbic system of the brain which is the seat of memory and emotion.

The Breathing in of Essential Oils is thought to trigger memories and emotions within the limbic system, which in turn stimulates a response within the entire system.

With the memory comes instant recall of the associated emotion - pleasure, happiness, laughter, affection or perhaps sadness, pain, grief.

For this reason, it is important to always heed the emotional responses to the aroma of the Essential Oils you intend to use. If the scent is in any way repellent, then it is wise to adjust your choice of oils for your blend. The subconscious, emotional responses are telling you something of vital importance and you would be wise to listen. Otherwise, you severely curtail the degree of benefit given.

Smell takes a direct, physical route to the brain because they employ nerve cells as transmitters and receivers. Odours travel directly through the olfactory system in the nose and the front part of the head into the limbic area of the brain which processes the smell.

Enhancing Your Eyes With Eyeliner

April 28th, 2006

The eyes are generally considered the most beautiful part of the body.

They are seen as “windows to your soul,” and very few people decline to comment on a pair of striking eyes. Fortunately, they are also the easiest of features to enhance. So read on and discover how to make those eyes really “pop” and catch attention.

When you are first learning how to apply eyeliner, it can be one of the trickiest tasks to master. But when it is applied properly, the overall effects can be absolutely amazing. Skillful application of different eyeliner can help make your eyes look more evenly spaced, thus giving a better balance to your entire face, and this is only one of the benefits. The following tips will cover several aspects of eyeliner, including how to chose the right eyeliner for your eyes, and how to properly apply it to your eyes.

Choosing the Right Eyeliner

Like all Beauty care products, choosing the right eyeliner is simple if you already know the effects you hope to accomplish by wearing it. In addition to helping balance the face, eyeliner is also meant to give lashes more depth, and make them appear thicker than they really are. Although there are two types of eyeliner, liquid and pencil form, it is recommended to only use pencil form on the lower lids of the eyes. Eyeliner in liquid form is most effective when only used on the top lids of your eyes.

When choosing the color of your eyeliner, you should always chose a color that complements the eye shadow you are going to use, but be sure it is a color that is flattering to your natural eye color. With brown eyes, the darker colors of eyeliner prove to work best, and with blue eyes, the softer colors tend to be most flattering.

Pencil Form Eyeliner versus Liquid Form

As mentioned before, eyeliner comes in two forms, pencil and liquid. Pencil eyeliner creates a soft definition to the eyes, while liquid eyeliner tends to offer more precision, and a more dramatic effect. When trying to chose which form of eyeliner to use, keep in mind the overall look you hope to accomplish.

Pencil form eyeliner is more popular, in part because it is easier to use. Liquid eyeliner requires practice in order to apply it correctly.

How to Apply Eyeliner - the Basics

To apply eyeliner correctly, you need to maker sure you have applied all other make-up first. If you apply your other make up on top of the eyeliner, it not only takes away from the effects, but during the application process, your eyeliner could get smudged or smeared.

Once you have all your other make-up on, make sure you have a good mirror and appropriate lighting, then begin. In one smooth motion, draw a thin line from one side of your eyelid to the other, remaining as close as you can to your eyelash line. How thick you chose to make that line will have a bearing on your final results.

Eyeliner is an inexpensive addition to your collection of Beauty care products and can show stunning results - now you know how to catch attention and draw those admiring gazes.

How To Meditate With a Mantra

April 28th, 2006

These days whenever a politician repeats a promise over and over again commentators say that this promise has become a “mantra” for that politician. For the journalists, the word “mantra” means a meaningless phrase that is repeated endlessly. For yogis however, a mantra is a word or collection of words, which has the power of liberating a human being from all limitations.

How can the repetition of a word or a few words have the capacity to bring about such miraculous results? It is all based on a simple psychological principle, “as you think, so you become.”

If you someone tells you “You’re stupid,” that’s of course a bad insult and will hurt you. However if you start to think “I am stupid,” and keep repeating this phrase over and over, then that is far worse. When someone tells you that you are stupid, then this is a negative outer-suggestion. When you start to think about it, then you are giving yourself, a negative auto-suggestion. If you keep thinking in a negative way, then your personal development will be harmed.

Meditation mantras have a positive meaning. They remind you that your true nature is something great: pure consciousness and boundless love. If you start to think about the best part of your being, you will begin to have more confidence in yourself and this will become apparent in your actions.

However, many people have read philosophical, spiritual or self-help books explaining these ideas, and yet they never realize these great truths in their everyday reality. It is not enough to just think about a good idea once, and then close the book. You need to think in a concentrated and systematic manner over a period of time in order to get results.

Meditation mantras have a special quality that helps in the task of concentrated, positive thinking: their very vibration has the capacity to Concentrate and Focus your mind. Some sounds, such as power drill breaking a pavement, can upset you greatly, while other sounds, like soothing music, can transport you to another world.

The syllables and words used in Meditation mantras have been chosen according their sonic capacity, and they greatly aid the task of concentration and contemplation, as well as carrying a positive meaning.

In order to get the benefits from mantra Meditation, you need to Meditate regularly with a mantra that has a positive meaning and the capacity to help you Concentrate. You need to do it on a regular basis, sitting silently two times a day for a period of 10 to 30 minutes.

It sounds easy, but the common experience of most people is that as you sit and try to think about one word or one phrase, your mind is quickly filled with many other thoughts; thoughts about work, financial problems, disputes with people and all kinds of other matters. When this happens, and it certainly will, then you have to bring your mind back to the mantra. Meditation is a process where you Concentrate on the mantra and its meaning for as long as you can, and when you mind wanders, you bring it back.

Keep doing it, and you will attain an improved capacity to Concentrate and deep inner peace.

It may still sound too good to be true, and some intellectuals scoff at the alleged power of a mantra. Once, a renowned Indian yogi came to America and delivered many lectures on this subject. In one of the lectures he was challenged by someone in the audience who said that it was not possible for a single word to deliver the results that the yogi promised. The yogi turned to the man, who was a distinguished professor and said “You fool!”

The professor turned red, and began to shout at the yogi, who calmly watched the professor unwind.

The yogi then addressed the professor and said: “Now can you understand the power of a single word? All I did was utter the word “fool” and your behavior was changed in an instant!

Xtend Life’s Omega 3 DHA Esters

April 27th, 2006

Omega 3 Fatty Acids benefit the hearts of healthy people and those at high risk of, or who have cardiovascular disease.” (American Heart Association)

Omega 3 essential Fatty Acids have long been recognized for their significant health benefits. Clinical studies have determined that the main benefits are derived from DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) and to a lesser extent EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid).

Although you will receive various health benefits from Omega 3s when taken from plant sources such as flax seed oil, you may miss out on the special benefits from DHA and EPA. This is because oils from plant sources do not contain DHA or EPA. Instead they contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) which is a precursor to DHA and EPA.

Therefore you have to convert the ALA to DHA and EPA….however, if your health is compromised in any way, or you are elderly this conversion may not take place.

Only Fish Oils provide DHA and EPA in a natural form that your body can easily assimilate. No conversion is required by the body. Natural Fish Oils do however have a number of drawbacks:

  • High levels of contaminants in the form of PCB’s.
  • Heavy metals, including mercury.
  • Low levels of DHA, the most beneficial component of Fish Oil.

As most Fish Oil capsules do not come from the same country where they were encapsulated, they are also subject to lengthy transport in tankers, additional handling, and additives to prevent them from becoming rancid.

Early in 2003 Xtend-Life recognized these drawbacks and after a year of development perfected a Fish Oil product that addressed these problems!

The result…a pure pharmaceutical grade, molecularly distilled Fish Oil ester with NO CONTAMINANTS and with exceptionally high levels of DHA!

This was made possible by using a cold deep water New Zealand fish called Hoki. This fish has naturally high levels of DHA which is further concentrated during the purification process. It is caught in the pristine Southern Ocean and is naturally free from contaminants.

As another plus…the fish is harvested, processed and the oil/esters encapsulated in New Zealand under the strictest controls possible so there is no risk of contamination due to excessive handling.

Furthermore, we provide the formula in the ester form instead of the usual triglyceride form of most Fish Oils. The body has to convert the triglycerides to ester in order to use it, so by taking it in the ester form in the first instance the bio-availability is greatly improved!

And finally…the purity and freshness of this product is such that we do not need to add any additives or preservatives.

Note from Warren Matthews, Chairman of Xtend-Life

“Not only do our customers depend on us to provide the best oil available, but so do our staff, not to mention my family…and myself. We will not therefore compromise on quality.

We could source raw oil for our formula from third world countries (as most manufacturers do) costing 1/10th the price of our local oil, but we won’t do that because, although we could purify it, additives used to prevent rancidity during transport could not be removed.”

As well as the cardiovascular and brain function benefits Omega 3 / DHA offers, research shows that Omega 3 also helps prevent and treat a number of other disorders, including:

Along with our Total Balance formula Xtend-Life Omega 3 / DHA Fish Oil should form part of your daily health strategy, irrespective of your age!

Cardiovascular Benefits

General heart benefits: Heart Disease is a widespread health problem in modern society. Fish Oil, rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids (DHA and EPA) has been proven in many clinical studies to benefit heart health, also supported by the American Heart Association guidelines which recommend the benefits of consumption of fish and Fish Oil. They recommend two servings for healthy persons and a daily serving of fish or Fish Oil supplement containing at least 900mg of Fish Oil for persons with Heart Disease.

Lowers Triglycerides: The effectiveness of Fish Oil in lowering blood triglycerides (fats) known to be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease has been well established in multiple clinical studies. Additionally, research has proven that DHA present in Fish Oil lowers the level of small, dense particles of LDL cholesterol, which are associated with Heart Disease. The level of large buoyant particles of HDL cholesterol (which is desirable) is increased. Total HDL cholesterol remains unchanged by DHA supplementation. HDL cholesterol benefits cardiovascular health.

Benefits Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): Fish Oil has been shown to lower mild Hypertension when it is due to cardiovascular disease, specifically High Cholesterol and Atherosclerosis (hardening of the artery walls).

Anti-clotting: Fish Oil helps avoid thrombosis (blood clots) as it prevents platelets (smallest cells in the blood) to stick together and form blood clots.

Reduces Heart Irregularities: Fish Oil… especially the DHA content of it has been shown to lower heart rates and also prevent arrhythmias (disturbances of the normal rhythm in the heart’s beating), thus decreasing the chance of sudden death by a heart attack.

Circulatory problems: Circulatory problems such as varicose veins and Raynaud’s disease benefit from Fish Oil. Fish Oil stimulates blood circulation and increases the breakdown of fibrin, a compound involved in clot and Scar formation.

Brain function

Depression: Persons with mood disorders such as Depression benefit from Fish Oil supplementation. Lack of Omega-3 Fatty Acids and in particular DHA has been linked by researchers to Depression. Fatty Acids are essential in the healthy formation of the brain’s nerve cell membranes and membrane fluidity. The brain is the richest source of Fatty Acids in the body, and because nerve cell function depends on proper membrane functioning and membrane fluidity, changes in membrane fluidity have a negative effect on behavior, mood and mental function.

Aggression: A new study of teenagers has found that Fish Oil and DHA consumption relates to lower hostility rates in teenagers. Hostility has been shown to predict the development and manifestation of Heart Disease.

Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), dyslexia and dyspraxia: Like Depression and other mood disorders, persons who suffer from ADHD, dyslexia and dyspraxia (absence of ability to perform coordinated skilled movements or clumsiness) benefit from Fish Oil supplementation. ADHD has been linked by research to lack of Omega-3 Fatty Acids, necessary for formation and repair of brain cell membranes, especially in the developing central Nervous system of children. Fish Oil may improve the efficiency of nerve impulses and neurotransmitters involved in brain function.

Memory, learning and Alzheimer’s Disease: Studies have proven that Omega-3 Fatty Acids improve brain function and that intake of Fish Oil and DHA is linked to a lowered risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Studies suggest that Fish Oil and DHA may protect the Nervous system from degeneration. DHA and Fish Oil have been proven to stimulate memory and learning abilities. Recent research learns that mothers who take DHA as a supplement during Pregnancy and lactation may increase the IQ of their babies.

Studies learn that Omega-3 fatty acid-intake by mothers during Pregnancy may protect babies against the development of Allergies. Fish Oil has been found to protect against symptoms of hay Fever, sinus infections, asthma, food Allergies and Allergic Skin Conditions such as hives and Eczema.

Fish Oil lowers the level of airway narrowing (which causes restriction of Breathing during an Asthma Attack) and calms inflammation. Studies have shown improved control in asthmatics that eat fish rich in Omega-3 essential Fatty Acids on a weekly basis.

Skin Disorders and skin health

Skin Disorders such as Psoriasis have been shown to improve from Fish Oils. In the skin of persons with Psoriasis the amount of compounds causing inflammation is many times greater than normal. Fish Oil inhibits the production of these inflammatory compounds. Fish Oil improves the health of skin, nails and hair.

Arthritis and Gout

Fish Oil supplements have been shown to benefit in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), and other inflammatory forms of Arthritis, such as occurs in some persons with Psoriasis and Gout. EPA and DHA in Fish Oil reduce the amount of compounds causing inflammation.

Diabetics suffering from non-Insulin dependent Diabetes or type II Diabetes benefit from Fish Oil supplementation. Research show that persons who consume 5-10 percent of their dietary energy consumption in the form of fish or Fish Oil, have less Insulin resistance, which causes diminished glucose uptake and glucose Metabolism in non-Insulin dependent diabetics. Fish Oil enhances Insulin secretion from beta-cells in the pancreas, regulating blood Sugar Levels. DHA plays a protective role in Diabetic neuropathy in all forms of Diabetes.

Immune System and cancer

The intake of Fish Oil has been proven to be beneficial for the body’s Immune Function. Research has linked intake of Fish Oil to a lowered risk of breast cancer and prostate cancer.

Women’s benefits

The consumption of Fish Oil lowers the risk for cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis in post-Menopausal women. (Pre)Menstrual symptoms such as menstrual pain are often alleviated from the use of Fish Oil supplementation. Omega-3 Fatty Acids are converted into pain relieving substances (prostaglandins type-3) that control contractions of the uterus, which cause the cramping.

Visual function

Research has shown that consumption of Fish Oil is linked to lowered risk of age related Macular Degeneration, an eye condition which is the leading cause of severe visual loss in people over age 50. The macula is the central area in the retina of the eye used for fine Focus such as reading. Omega-3 Fatty Acids form an important part of the building blocks of the retina. Fish Oil intake may improve Focus, color, perception and clarity of vision.

Inflammatory bowel disease

Fish Oil has been proven to be beneficial in intestinal health. Fish Oil has an Anti-Inflammatory effect in inflammatory bowel disease (Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease).

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Xtend-Life Omega 3/DHA Esters? They are a highly concentrated and purified form of natural Fish Oil. Only one fish is used to manufacture this oil. It is called New Zealand Hoki and it is harvested from the cold Southern Ocean surrounding the southern part of New Zealand. Unlike other Fish Oils this product has a high concentration of DHA which scientist believe to be the most beneficial component of Fish Oil. Even though the ‘crude’ hoki Fish Oil itself is considered to be the purest in the world, we still refine and purify it further by using a process called molecular distillation which removes any residue impurities and thus enables it to be considered pharmaceutical grade.

What are the advantages of Xtend-Life’s product over other Fish Oil products? Freshness and purity! Our oil is processed close to the port of landing, and unlike other products which have been transported all around the world in tankers and in less than ideal conditions it is not necessary to put in additives to Mask any rancidity. Also, there is the comfort in knowing the type of fish used. Most other products use a mixture of fish type sourced from third world countries. Additionally, because we supply direct to our customers and do frequent production runs the finished product is never older than 60 – 90 days when shipped. This is quite unique in the supplement industry.

Why is it in an ‘ester’ form? Bio-availability! Most Fish Oils are in a triglyceride form. The body has to convert this triglyceride compound into an ester before it can be used. Therefore, by providing the compound in an ester form already we are providing the body with less work to do, enabling it to Concentrate in actually using the ingredient’s benefits! An ester is formed when an alcohol combines with an acid in a reaction to form an Organic compound.

Are Omega 3/DHA Esters safe to use? Absolutely! Omega 3/DHA Esters are made from pure New Zealand Hoki fish and are 100% natural. They contain no pharmaceutical ingredients.

What is the recommended dosage? We recommend between 2 – 4 soft gels per day. In other words 1 – 2 bottles per month.

Some Companies suggest much higher dose rates. Why don’t you? This would be because with most products you need to take higher doses to achieve similar levels of DHA. Many products have less than half the amounts of DHA and thus require double the dosage to equate to the same amount.

Are there any discounts for Bulk purchases? Our policy is to keep our selling price at the lowest possible level to ensure customers get maximum value for money. However, we do offer a genuine customer loyalty program for those customers who order regularly. This program provides product discounts and shipping subsidies.

Can you tell me more about the ingredients in Omega 3/DHA Esters? If you refer to the ingredients on this website you will see the amount of Omega 3 per soft gel. The DHA and EPA are part of the Omega 3 component. The balance of the soft gel consists of purified Fish Oil which contains a wide spectrum of other Fatty Acids. We add a small amount of a broad spectrum natural Vitamin E to act as a natural preservative when the oil is put into the soft gel.

What is the soft gel made of? It is made out of a highly purified, pharmaceutical grade bovine gelatin extract. Unlike a hard capsule it is not practical to manufacture soft gels using a vegetable source. Most pharmaceutical soft gels are manufactured using the same raw material.

Are there any side effects associated with taking Omega 3/DHA Esters? There have been no reported side effects of Xtend-Life Omega 3/DHA Esters.

Can Omega 3/DHA Esters be taken while Pregnant or nursing? Most physicians recommend this product for Pregnant or nursing mothers as it may help in positive development of the child’s brain. However, we always recommend that customers who are Pregnant or nursing consult with their physician before using any of our products.

Will Omega 3/DHA Esters interfere with other prescription medications? It is highly unlikely. However, high doses may enhance blood thinning. It is rare that there is any interaction with a prescription medicine. If in doubt please consult your physician or email us and we will check our data bases for any potential conflicts..

I have a problem with stiff joints, although I have not been diagnosed with Arthritis. Will I notice a difference? Yes, it is very possible you will notice quite a difference. General stiffness in joints and aching/’creaking’ bones often benefit from a regular intake of this product.

I am taking other nutritional supplements and natural medications. Is this ok? Yes, there is generally no problem with taking additional supplements or remedies from other suppliers. However, if you are taking a lot of supplements be careful that you don’t overdose on some ingredients or have interactions between them. It may be that you might be able to put together a better combination with some professional help. If you would like some help in this area please email us for assistance.

Is this product compatible with all other Xtend-Life products? Yes, it can be combined with any of them.

Can I get ongoing advice and help from Xtend-Life? Yes. Xtend-Life experts are here to answer any questions you have regarding their products and their uses for your condition.
