Reducing Cholestorol Naturally

Abnormities in blood fat level is a contributing factor to coronary Heart Disease. Cholesterol and triglycerides are the two main fats in the blood. Both fats are consumed in the diet but what is not generally known is that cholesterol is also made up naturally in most of the tissues in the body, the exception being the tissues in the brain. The Exercise That Reduces or Reverses the Effects of Aging

One of the easiest and most convenient forms of Exercise is walking. Different studies have shown that walking for thirty minutes, three times a week, has a host of beneficial side effects. Reduction of blood pressure, a reduction in Anxiety levels, retaining bone mass and weight management are a few of the rewards we reap from walking.

New studies show that walking can also reduce the risk of Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Starting in our forties and fifties, people who stay active by getting up and walking are at less risk for developing these conditions. These studies have shown that walking may even reverse the mental aging process, which allows senior citizens to continue to be mentally alert at a later age.

The latest study from the University of Colorado at Boulder has shown that leisurely walking has the same weight loss effects as walking at a normal rate. Slower walking also reduces the risk of injury. It can be done anywhere at anytime. Slower walking however does not necessarily improve cardiovascular Fitness so an aerobic activity such as bicycling or working on Ellipticals, two to three times a week, is suggested for maximum effect.

These new studies have basically shown us that it is easier than ever to find ways to stay fit. Taking our dogs for a walk can be one of the healthiest activities we have for both ourselves and our pets. Taking our children for a walk with us can be a bonding experience that benefits our mental as well as physical health. Parking further away at the mall for a marathon afternoon of window shopping with friends can be great fun. These are all activities that can be easily incorporated into our lives. Using our creativity, we can find little ways every day to have fun while becoming fit. So, let’s get outside and stroll our way to a better life.

Vipassana Meditation

Vipassana means “insight” -to see things as they really are, through a process of self-observation. It means insight into your own nature which enables one to recognize himself the cause of suffering and eliminate it.


It is usually done in a course of 10 days, when the participants refrain from reading, writing, and even talking (except discussing difficulties faced during Meditation with the teacher). Set aside 15 minutes. Find a quiet place. Sit down cross-legged on the floor or a chair with a straight back. Become aware of your breath. Take a mental note of whatever feeling you are experiencing.

Open your eyes slowly after 10 or 15 minutes and get up gradually. Do not worry if you do not get any great insights in your first session. Try to be aware of your senses and emotions and their impact on you.


It is free of rites. Allows one to study sensation in the body like cold, pain, itching etc. One develops wisdom.

Raja Yoga Meditation

Different Types of Skin Rashes

Literally, a Rash means the growth of some red bumps on your skin caused by irritation to the skin. As the effect, the skin may become swollen, itchy and bumpy. Generally, skin Rashes are not contagious and are triggered by external material such as dust, food, dry air, animal dander, certain fabrics and many more. There are several reasons behind the development of these skin Rashes. Some skin Rashes are merely because of the dry Skin Condition, some may be caused by skin Allergies or infection, and some may even cause by the growth of fungus on your skin.

Dry Skin Rashes are the most common Rashes among all. If you belong to the category of those having Dry Skin, then you might have bigger chances of developing skin Rashes because being dry, your skin will be easily irritated, especially during the cold, dry months of the year. Prevent Dry Skin Rashes by drinking sufficient water and apply adequate amount of Moisturizer. Some Dry Skin Rashes are however, hereditary. Enlarged Prostate (BPH): A Common Part of Aging

It is common for the prostate gland to become enlarged as a man ages. Doctors call the condition Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), or Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy.

As a man matures, the prostate goes through two main periods of growth. The first occurs early in puberty, when the prostate doubles in size. At around age 25, the gland begins to grow again. This second growth phase often results, years later, in BPH.

Though the prostate continues to grow during most of a man’s life, the enlargement doesn’t usually cause problems until late in life. BPH rarely causes symptoms before age 40, but more than half of men in their sixties and as many as 90 percent in their seventies and eighties have some symptoms of BPH.

As the prostate enlarges, the layer of tissue surrounding it stops it from expanding, causing the gland to press against the urethra like a clamp on a garden hose.

The bladder wall becomes thicker and Irritable. The bladder begins to contract even when it contains small amounts of urine, causing more Frequent Urination.

Eventually, the bladder weakens and loses the ability to empty itself. Urine remains in the bladder. The narrowing of the urethra and partial emptying of the bladder cause many of the problems associated with BPH.

What the Mind Possesses, The Body Expresses

Stress is the underlying cause of 85% of visits to the doctor and includes Fibromyalgia, Headaches, and other Chronic Pain syndromes. If this is so and the research shows it to be true then why do we not recognize these stressors? How is it that we let Stress create such problems in our lives?

These questions are being studied more than ever before as is noted in the latest issues of Time, News Week, US News and World Report, National Geographic and a host of other weekly and monthly magazines including O, The Oprah Magazine.

If we understand that the underlying cause of Stress is a mind body connection response to our thoughts and our bodies response to those thoughts then it makes since. Florence Nightingale, in her book Notes on Nursing written in 1859 stated that volumes are now written on the connection of the mind and the body. Even then she declared that if we help the patents to vary their thoughts we help them get better.

So why is the Medical Community so slow in connecting the two. Good Question and not so hard when you think of our fast paced world and how easy and routine it is for a physician to write a prescription to calm our nerves.

As humans we experience daily Stress totally different than say a rabbit in the wild. A rabbit while leisurely feeding will respond with all its senses with any sign of danger. However, unlike humans the rabbit will Relax and go on feeding as soon as the signs of danger pass. It has no thoughts of what just occurred, or what might occur or what could have occurred.

When humans sense danger we also go on the alert. Our heart rate faster, our blood pressure higher, our blood diverted to our arms and legs so that we can fight or get the heck out of Dodge. On the other hand, we humans unlike the rabbit tend to proceed to worry about the “What Ifs.” What if the danger comes back? What if it isn’t gone and I just I think it is gone?

When the “What Ifs” set in we are beyond the protecting intentions of the Stress response and become distressed. We take a thought and turn it into worry, which creates High Blood Pressure, fast pulse, etc.

Read the following and then try the exercise: Close your eyes take a deep breathe and pretend or imagine that you are in your kitchen. Look around the kitchen and listen for the hum of the refrigerator. Walk over to the refrigerator. Did you hear your footsteps? Now open the door of the refrigerator? Feel the cool air as it flows out.

You notice a bright yellow lemon and you reach in and take it out. Pay attention to the size, color, temperature, and texture of the lemon as you hold it in your hand.

Now take the lemon over to where you would normally cut up fruits or vegetables. Take out your favorite knife and slice through the lemon. Watch the lemon juice as it oozes out onto the cutting area. Now pick up one half of the lemon and smell the scent of the lemon.

Now open your mouth and take a bite of the lemon. Taste the lemon juice as it passes across your teeth onto your tongue. Taste the tangy tart taste of the lemon as you feel it in your jaw. Go ahead and notice and then swallow the extra saliva in your mouth.

If you are like most who try this Exercise then you may have noticed a little sour taste with some discomfort in your jaw and/or extra saliva in your mouth. What you created with just your thought was a physiological, biochemical response in your body – yes, just from a though – So the old saying “We are what we think we are is true.” Therefore, change your negative thoughts to positive thoughts and experience the changes in you.

How do I know if I am Stressed?

If you are finger tapping, compulsively eating, biting your nails, having repetitive thoughts you might be Stressed. If you have increased your smoking, drinking or drug use you might be Stressed. If you are absent or being late for work then you might be Stressed.

Prolonged Stress can result in Heart Disease, food cravings, Insomnia, Depression, PMS, obesity Arthritis, Diabetes, and multiple other conditions that are a direct result of uncontrolled Stress.

Try this simple Breathing technique to Relax and decrease Stress. Blow your stomach out like blowing up a balloon. This will drop the diaphragm down and automatically create a deep breath. More oxygen is able to enter into the two lower lobes of the lungs, which has more blood vessels to carry oxygen to the cells.


Exercise is the most widely recommended form of treatment for relieving the effects of Stress and Depression. It increases endorphin release (the bodies natural morphine) along with melatonin (natural sleeping pill) and serotonin (natural Prozac) production, and helps level out blood glucose. Think Stress Control

Miracles Do Happen

Ten years ago I thought I was infertile. Now here’s me, many years later with my two beautiful babies. They were both naturally conceived after years of “trying”. Here’s how it happened…

My name is Carol Andrews, and I’d like to share my story with you. It’s a story of despair, hope, loss, sadness, longing and finally joy—not one, but two miracles!

Ten years ago my husband Lindsay and I decided it was “time to start a family”. We had been married for five years, had saved up and bought our first house. We both had stable jobs. I was 34. My husband was 27. We were ready. We made the decision on our fifth wedding anniversary, 9 September 1994.

We thought it would be easy. After all, we’d put so much effort into not getting Pregnant over the first five years of our marriage. We’d tried out all of the different contraceptive options, since the contraceptive pill didn’t seem to agree with me.

We were both convinced that it would happen quickly. After all, we were both very goal oriented people. Anything we’d set ourselves as a goal before, we’d always achieved. So we were puzzled when 3 months went by and my period rolled around yet again.

We told ourselves that it would happen when the time was right, and continued our efforts in earnest.

It was only later (years later) that I discovered that many of the things we were doing at this stage were actively preventing us from conceiving and carrying a child.

After 12 months of frustration, the situation was starting to affect our relationship. I was moody and short tempered. I seemed to be frequently on the verge of tears, especially if I was out shopping and saw a Pregnant woman, or one of the endless number of strollers and prams with a cute baby or toddler on board.

What was I doing wrong? How come all these other women could do it and I couldn’t? What was wrong with me?

I started to feel guilty for leaving it so late. I felt guilty for not looking after my body better—maybe if I’d never drunk alcohol? Maybe I should leave my job?

And I started to blame Lindsay, my husband. What if he was “shooting blanks”? Would it undermine his masculinity if he found out? Would he even go for the test?

Eventually we got all these feelings of resentment and fear out in the open. We had a long heart to heart talk, and decided we needed to get some answers.

I’d been putting off going to the OB-GYN for fear of what I’d be told. I had a good friend who’d been going through IVF (unsuccessfully) and the thought of going through the same thing terrified me.

So Lindsay had his sperm count tested. I had an ultrasound and some blood tests to check for endometriosis or other physical problems, as well as hormonal or other physiological causes.

The results, when they came back, were more frustrating that ever: there was no physical, physiological, or biochemical reason we shouldn’t be able to conceive. We, like many couples, had what was termed “non-specific Infertility”. In other words the experts didn’t have a clue. They suggested we “de-Stress” and “have more sex”.

We took a week off and went to the beach. But sex was no longer much fun. It was something we did at the right time because my temperature graph said I was ovulating. Afterwards we’d talk quietly about our fading hopes. We’d try and look on the bright side—just think about all the money we’d save by not having kids. And we’d be able to travel, and go to restaurants whenever we wanted to, and buy a sports car. Who were we kidding? Often after sex we’d just lie together and cry until we fell asleep.

After two years of hope fading to frustration, fading to sadness and emptiness, I knew I had to do something or I would go crazy. I started to research. I read every book, every journal, every article I could get my hands on. I read about western medicine and alternative therapies. I talked to people about new treatments and found out as much as I could about clinical trials that were happening around the world.

I was obsessed. I would overcome this “problem” if it killed me.

I applied everything I learned as much as I could. I was taking 14 different vitamin and mineral supplements every day. My husband was too, as I’d discovered that pre-conception care for the potential father was as important as for the soon-to-be-mother. We were exercising an hour and a half every day. We were eating only Organic foods, drinking 2 litres of filtered water every day, eating meat only occasionally (and then only Organic), and avoiding anything toxic like alcohol or passive cigarette smoke. We had tests for levels of lead in our systems (we live near a busy road, in a 100 year old house that’s full of lead-based paint). I had my amalgam fillings replaced with ceramic to be sure I wasn’t affected by mercury. We even took the phase of the moon into account as I’d discovered something called the “biorhythmic lunar cycle”, in which research seemed to show that a woman is at her most fertile during her lunar peak, ie at the same phase of the moon that was present at her birth!!

My long-suffering husband took all this in his stride. In fact I think if I’d told him we’d be more likely to conceive if we had sex underwater, at high tide, on the winter solstice, he’d have done it. We were that desperate.

On 27 May 1999, four years, eight months and 18 days after we’d first made the decision to try for children, we fell Pregnant. My hands shook as I took the little urine-soaked strip of plastic with its TWO stripes (TWO STRIPES!!!) to show my husband. We laughed. We cried. We calculated birth dates (28 February 2000—would we have a “leap baby?”). We planned. We giggled like teenagers every time we looked at each other. We’d DONE IT!

At nine weeks we turned up for the first ultrasound, excited about the prospect of “seeing” our new baby for the first time. We’d already chosen a name. “Eden” was to be our first-born.

Our OB-GYN was a highly experienced specialist in his late 50s. As part of my research, I’d tracked down the “best in the business”. He looked at the ultrasound, and then looked at us, and said “This is not looking good.” My heart sank. I could feel a knot in my stomach and the tears starting. My husband had my hand in a vice grip. “The heart beat is slow and irregular. Rarely does a fetus in this condition last past 9 weeks.” They were words I just didn’t want to believe. I hung onto the next sentence: “Sometimes it sorts itself out, and you may go on to deliver a healthy child, but you shouldn’t get your hopes up.” But the next sentence was what gutted me: “Besides, you’re 39. The chances of you having a baby at your age are very slim. You should have started in your 20s.” Expert he may have been, but tact and bed-side manner obviously weren’t skills he’d honed.

I took two weeks off work, and stayed in bed. It only gave me more time to think and worry. At the end of the ninth week of my Pregnancy I started to bleed. I didn’t want to believe it. I called my husband, who came straight home. We went up to the doctor’s Surgery. With a kind of “I told you so” attitude he carried out another ultrasound, then booked me in for a D&C (Dilation and Curettage, where they scrape out the “products of conception” under anesthetic) the next day. I felt violated. Eden was dead. We asked afterwards if we could at least see our baby (our Eden). We were told by the surgeon that “It looks just like a piece of spaghetti. There’s nothing to see.” We were numb.

I talked to a mid-wife friend of mine, who gave me a small glimmer of hope. She pointed out that at least now I knew I could fall Pregnant. It had taken over four and a half years, but I had overcome a major hurdle. The next barrier was holding the fetus for nine months. She said that with all our pre-conception efforts, we had at least made progress. She said that many women who had a miscarriage were happily Pregnant by the time the due date of the miscarried fetus came around. I found it hard to believe, but I hoped.

It was shortly after that, that I discovered a very important piece of research. I believe now that this was the key that finally meant I could fall Pregnant and carry a baby to term.
