Isn’t It Time For WHOLISTIC Medicine?

December 22nd, 2005

I posted a story the other day on one of my blogs - the headline reads: “Antidepressant drugs quadruple risk of suicides, research shows”.

I mean, c’mon. isn’t the whole reason we take Anti-Depressant drugs centered around NOT wanting to give up, check out, commit suicide, stop living, etc.? So, we take a drug that makes us more bummed? To the point of suicide?

When are we going to stop running to a doctor every time we (or our children) have sniffle or pang to get that ‘magic pill’ that somehow ALWAYS manages to have a side effect worse than the original symptom??

Don’t tell me about the marvels of modern medicine, I know about an awful lot of them. And, in case you’re getting the wrong idea, I have immense respect for scientists and researchers who have devoted lifetimes to try and find ways to overcome modern man’s illnesses.

I have immense respect for most medical doctors and practitioners who have devoted their lives to trying to help and heal their fellow man.

However, the insurance companies, the pharmaceutical companies, the ‘big business’ of medicine - they can go away any day now. When the almighty dollar supercedes the importance of life, it’s time to do something.

Also, why in the heck can’t we learn to stop throwing the baby out with the bathwater??? With the advent of ’science’, all of a sudden everything our ancestors did and believed in the realm of healing was all of a sudden labeled ’superstition’ and ineffective ‘folk medicine.’

Isn’t it funny that now we’re realizing how right much of that folk medicine was. Mistletoe is being researched for its effect on Cancer - with astounding results. St John’s Wort is now known to be a very effective Anti-Depressant (without making you want to kill yourself!), light - that’s right, light - is being used to treat ulcers, infections, carpal tunnel syndrome, and a host of other ailments - successfully.

Therapeutic touch is being used in hospitals for Surgery and heart patients, successfully. The power of prayer - dubbed ineffective by the so-called scientific experts for decades upon decades - has now been proven to have a measurable positive effect on the ill.

So, is the pendulum finally swinging back to center? I sure as heck hope so. But, more than that, I hope it doesn’t completely swing in the opposite direction.

If I feel my children need medical attention, I do NOT HESITATE to get it for them. But, if I can keep my children healthy in the first place with natural therapies, Herbs, Vitamins, good nutrition and treat them at home in the same manner successfully, I do that.

We need that ever-elusive balance. Science, allopathic and ‘alternative’ medicine working TOGETHER for the good of the people. In my humble opinion, THAT is what ‘holistic’ should mean. Everything working together as a whole to help the whole of the person. The new buzz term for this is ‘Integrative Medicine’.

But, no matter what you call it, it makes sense. Use everything at your disposal to heal - and first, do no harm. (I wish the pharmaceutical companies and many doctors would follow that!)

Other causes of Insomnia include ‘Restless legs’ syndrome (RLS), magnesium or iron deficiency, hormonal imbalance, shift work and excessive consumption of caffeine or other stimulants.

Insomnia is also a side effect of some prescription Anti-Depressant medication.

It is thought that more than 50% of all cases of Insomnia are linked to psychological causes, including Depression, Anxiety and Stress.

Prescription sleeping medication can be addictive and can affect your ability to Fall Asleep naturally.

“I have tried many natural products to try and help me to sleep. None of them has helped me like SerenitePlus.” Kay F., Canada

“I am a pensioner and for the last 6 years, I have not been able to Fall Asleep as I used to do. Maybe it is because I am not as active as before, although I try and walk a little with the dogs every day! I have been very pleased with the results of your remedy, which relaxes me and helps me to Fall Asleep. Thank you for answering all my questions!” B.C., George.

“After some relationship troubles I found myself worrying and obsessing every night and no matter what I did I could not let go and Fall Asleep. This remedy really does the trick. It feels just like natural sleep because I become Drowsy and relaxed and then can’t remember when I fell asleep. Aloe Vera - A Wonder Herb For Skin

December 22nd, 2005

Aloe is grown mainly in the dry regions of Africa, Asia, Europe and America. Because of its many therapeutic uses, it is now commercially cultivated in the United States, Japan, and countries in the Caribbean and Mediterranean. However, in many places you can grown your own Aloe Vera plant quite happy in a pot as a household plant.

Despite its very cactus-like characteristics, Aloe belongs to the lily family, which also includes asparagus, onions, leeks and Garlic. The Aloe plant contains over thirty enzymes, including lipase and oxidase. It could be argued that enzymes are the missing element in the modern diet since 40% of the adult population suffer Digestive Problems and digestion is enzyme-based.

Aloe Vera also contains significant levels of salicylic acid (the active ingredient in aspirin) which accounts for some of the herb’s pain-killing potential. Some people swear by a burst of Aloe spray on sunburn when a gel or cream is too painful to apply.

Salicylic acid also plays a role in Aloe’s detoxifying and cell-cleansing capacity. The well-researched capacity of Aloe to stimulate the Immune System is arguably its most important attribute. Others have testified that a daily drink with high quality Aloe juice helps clear sensitive skin. Aloe is well known as a soothing ingredient in Skincare Lotions and body products.

There are a host of studies from every continent documenting the healthful benefits of Aloe Vera, taken both internally and used externally. Aloe has truly earned it reputation as a natural, healthful ‘wonder’ herb.

Beauty Basics at Face Value

December 22nd, 2005

Last year, more than eight-point-seven-million people underwent cosmetic procedures to enhance what nature gave them, or didn’t. But experts tell us that Americans may be jumping into invasive procedures too quickly.

Despite the media coverage of makeover reality shows, the majority of Americans are not looking for extreme transformations. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, most of us want to look better, naturally, with 68-percent preferring a subtle change. And experts agree that looking your best could be accomplished at home for considerably less.

Dr. Linda Franks, a leader in the specialized Skin Care frontier, says “To get that timeless, healthy look you need to start with an appropriate Skincare regime. Taking good care of your skin can stave off fine lines, Wrinkles, age spots and even Dry Skin.”

Where to begin? At the sink!

Doctors say whatever your skin type, the key is to cleanse it gently. Avoid hot water and use lukewarm instead, to prevent over-drying. And throw in the towel – traditional washcloths are too abrasive for the face, so use your hands and fingers.

Sixty-eight-percent of women claim to have sensitive skin which means dry, tight, chapped or easily irritated skin. Dr. Franks advises moisturizing regularly and avoiding harsh Cleansers with ingredients such as fragrances, dyes and preservatives because sensitive skin is easily damaged and takes longer to recover.

If your skin is dry and easily irritated, don’t wash more than once a day. You may risk stripping the skin of its natural oils. Dr. Franks recommends looking for non-irritating cleansing washes that are Soap-free, Moisturizers that are light, oil-free, and water-based to help maintain the skin’s natural barrier. Another tip—make sure to choose a facial Moisturizer with an SPF of at least 15, which protects against both UVB and UVA rays.

Skin sensitivity may also result from the third most common, non-surgical Skincare procedure known as Microdermabrasion.

Microdermabrasion is a quick and easy, non-invasive procedure that helps to reveal healthier-looking skin by sweeping away Dead Skin Cells. Dr. Franks reveals that, following the treatment, the best way to avoid irritation is by opting for an ultra-gentle Cleanser and Moisturizer.

A new clinical study shows that PURPOSE gentle cleansing wash and dual treatment moisture Lotion with spf 15 are compatible with this procedure.

How else can you obtain optimal skin health?

Here are some other healthy basics to keep your skin looking its best:

Dr. Franks says, “Exercise opens up blood vessels to make skin look healthy and youthful. It’s so important for healthy skin.” Regular cardiovascular Exercise increases blood flow to the skin which assists in collagen production. Maintaining muscle mass through Exercise can also help anchor and support skin, keeping it taut.

And drink up! At least eight, eight-ounce glasses of water a day are crucial for optimal skin hydration.

So before you sign on for an extreme and expensive makeover, just think back on some simple, Beauty basics! You just might like what you see!

Mudras For Health and Vitality

December 22nd, 2005

The physical body is made up of five elements namely - Air, Water, Fire, Earth and Akasha (ether - the tiny intercellular spaces in the human body).

Imbalance of these elements disrupts the immunity system and causes disease.

Deficiencies in any of these elements can be made up by connecting one part of the body with another in a particular manner through Mudras.

When a finger representing an element is brought into contact with the thumb, that element is brought into balance. Therefore the disease caused by the imbalance is cured. Mudras start electromagnetic currents within the body which balance various constituting elements and restore health. The joining of fingers creates an effect on the human body.

Migraines - What Will Help?

December 21st, 2005

What causes Headaches and Migraines?

Doctors have different theories about the causes of Migraines and Headaches. Most doctors agree, however, that they have multiple causes and that it is important to do a thorough examination if you have recurring Headaches.

Here are a few of the most common causes:

  • Stress and Tension are high up on the list of culprits. Stress causes the muscles in the neck and head to tense up, thereby constricting blood flow to the brain
  • Migraine may be preceded by a spasm of the arteries leading to the brain, once again diminishing blood flow to the brain
  • Hormonal fluctuations may cause headache or Migraine. This may also be linked to the contraceptive pill
  • Buildup of Toxins and poor Liver Functioning can also be responsible, reducing the body’s ability to Eliminate Toxins from the diet or the environment
  • Certain foods may trigger Migraine in susceptible people. The most common are chocolate, cheese, nuts, alcohol and MSG
  • Low blood Sugar Levels and dehydration can also bring on headache, especially if you have skipped a meal.

In naturopathic medicine, headache and Migraine is seen as a ‘toxic’ condition and a signal from the body that there is an imbalance in organ functioning.

Naturopaths will treat the condition, rather than the symptom only and the goal is therefore to restore health and proper organ functioning, not only to relieve pain symptomatically.

What is MiGone Plus and how does it work?

MiGone Plus is especially formulated by a Clinical Psychologist and is a concentrated medicinal extract of three Herbs especially chosen to address three of the principle underlying causes of chronic headache and migraine:

Tanecetum parthenium (Feverfew) is a well-known medicinal herb and one of the most widely respected in the prophylactic (preventative) treatment of Migraine and chronic headache. There are many clinical studies to support its effectiveness in significantly reducing or completely eliminating the occurrence and the severity of chronic headache and Migraine.

Scientific research has demonstrated that Feverfew contains a range of compounds called sesquiterpene lactones, the principle ingredient being parthenolide. Parthenolide has been scientifically shown to prevent excessive clumping of blood platelets and to reduce the release of certain pain inducing chemicals and inflammatory compounds.

It has also been shown to make smooth muscle in the walls of cerebral blood vessels less reactive to vaso-constrictors - thereby relaxing constricted blood vessels and increasing blood flow to the brain.

Silybum marianus (Milk Thistle) is regarded as one of the most important herbal liver tonics and restoratives. As is the case with Feverfew, medical use of Milk Thistle may be traced back more than 2000 years.

Like Feverfew, Milk Thistle has been subject to many clinical trials which clearly demonstrate its effectiveness. It is frequently recommended to counteract the harmful effects of alcohol and other drugs on the liver and clinical studies have shown that it helps the liver to return to normal functioning once drinking has stopped.

Scientific analysis of Milk Thistle shows that it contains a flavonoid complex called silymarin, which is largely responsible for the medical benefits of this herb. Silymarin is a powerful anti-oxidant and can block the entrance of toxins into the liver and remove toxins at cellular level, thereby resulting in regeneration of liver cells and improved Liver Functioning. This would have a direct impact on overall systemic health as the liver is one of the most important organs in the body.

Passiflora incarnata is a tropical herb which has been used since the 19th century for Nervous conditions. Modern research supports traditional usage and clinical trials have demonstrated the relaxing and anti-Anxiety effects of Passiflora. Passiflora is often recommended to treat Anxiety and reduce Tension and is also very useful in reducing the Withdrawal Symptoms of recovering drug addicts and alcoholics.

Medical analysis has shown that Passiflora contains flavonoids which are responsible for its calming and anti-Anxiety effects.

MiGone Plus does more than just remove pain.

Prescription painkillers and synthetic drugs used to treat Migraine and chronic headache may reduce the pain associated with these conditions, but do not address the causes.

This means that the person must continue to suffer and be dependent on the use of painkillers. The ‘rebound effect’ of many painkillers is well-known but seldom discussed in medical circles.

In essence, the ‘rebound effect’ means that continued use of some synthetic painkillers can be the cause of future Headaches, making the person dependent on the drug indefinitely.

The chemicals in synthetic drugs can also accumulate in the liver, reducing Liver Functioning and overall health.

Are you addicted to synthetic painkillers?

Many synthetic painkillers contain chemicals that can result in dependency, which leads to daily use of the drug and withdrawal effects when it is stopped. This is both expensive and very bad for one’s health.

The effects of long term and regular use of some synthetic painkillers are not yet fully researched. Anyone who finds themselves needing to take prescription and OTC painkillers regularly should consult their health care practitioner for help.

How has MiGone helped others?

“Julia (married, 33 years old) came to see me on the advice of her doctor. She was suffering from recurring Headaches and Migraines. Medical investigation revealed no obvious cause and her doctor was concerned that Julia’s Headaches were psychological in origin. During her first consultation, she told me that she was taking over-the-counter painkillers on a daily basis and found that she needed stronger and stronger tablets to ease the pain of her Headaches. Apart from the Stress related to caring for a young family, Julia did not seem to have any particular problems which could be causing her chronic Headaches and Migraines and there was no sign of an underlying problem from her childhood. I told her about the ‘rebound effect’ of painkilling tablets and that it was possible that the very medication that she was taking to relieve her Headaches was also causing them to recur. Together, Julia and I decided that we would beat her Headaches once and for all! I put her on a detox diet and recommended that she take MiGone daily, cautioning her that it might take a month or more for her to see positive effects. During the first week, Julia’s Headaches continued and she used PureCalm to Relax and help with the pain. By the second week, her Headaches were less frequent and much less severe and Julia was beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel. When she visited me at the end of the fourth week, Julia had experienced only one mild headache in the previous 10 days and she was really feeling the benefits of the detox. diet! At her three months follow up visit, Julia was headache free and very proud of herself! It just goes to show that, even though Headaches and Migraines are often caused by psychological factors, this is not always the case. Had Julia’s doctor been more knowledgeable about herbal medicines, he may have been able to save her a trip to the psychologist!” - Michele Carelse Clinical Psychologist:- Feelgood Counseling.

“After years of Headaches I tried MiGone. I am now completely off the pain tablets for the first time since I can remember” William, UK

“My Headaches are linked to Stress and I usually have a few Headaches every week, with one really big one once or twice a month. I had all sorts of tests but they could find nothing wrong with me. My doctor suggested that i take medication, which i did not want to do, so I tried MiGone capsules. After two weeks the Headaches became less and less frequent and I have only had one headache in the past 6 weeks. I really can’t see why doctors don’t recommend MiGone instead of harmful drugs! Thanks for your help!” - Melinda, USA

“Thank you for your wonderful products, especially Mi-Gone Plus! I have been a sufferer of cluster Headaches since my teens and no-one could find the cause. The money I spent on pain medication was no joke and it always made me feel sick the next day. Since taking a course of Mi-Gone I have only had one attack, which was quite mild and went away sooner than usual.” - Karen, USA

“I wanted to write and recommend Mi-Gone Plus to anyone who suffers from Migraine like I do. It has made a tremendous difference!” - Steward, USA

“I have recently used your Natural products for severe headache/migraine. For many months I have been trying various drugs etc, and have in fact been referred to a specialist because of the lack of relief I have received from these drugs. I decided to ship to England your products, I have combined the MiGone Plus with PureCalm and have received an amazing relief from my problems. I have used the products for three weeks and they have changed the quality of my life completely. I wholeheartedly endorse these products, and have become an Affiliate of this company. Thank you” - David, USA

How do I take MiGone Plus?

MiGone Plus must be used daily to prevent the occurrence of chronic Headaches and Migraine.

Dilute 10-15 drops in 1/4 glass of juice or water three times daily for six weeks. Thereafter 10 drops twice daily for a further six weeks. Repeat once or twice a year if necessary.

An initial six weeks course is recommended at full dosage, followed by a further six weeks at half dosage. Some people may need a repeat course once or twice a year, depending on lifestyle and dietary factors.

An additional dose may be taken at the early onset of Migraine or headache. This often stops the pain in its tracks.

Caution: Safety during Pregnancy or breastfeeding has not yet been established.

MiGone Plus can be used in conjunction with other remedies for comprehensive treatment of certain conditions. Here are some examples:

How soon will MiGone Plus help me?

MiGone Plus must be taken regularly and can take 4 - 6 weeks to show full results, although improvement is often noticed earlier.

How long will a bottle last?

One bottle of MiGone Plus will last 25-30 days.

The Basics of Healthy Hair

December 21st, 2005

Is your hair dry and brittle? Is it greasy and flat? Puffy, stringy, frizzy, the list goes on and on. There are so many things that can go wrong with our hair. So here are the basics thing to keep your hair healthy and in beautiful condition.

Scrub-a-dub-dub! Everyone knows that you have to Shampoo your hair, otherwise you have tons of gross buildup and it just won’t cooperate. Conditioner is just as important otherwise you won’t even be able to comb your hair, much less style it. It’s very important to pick a quality Shampoo and conditioner fit for your hair type.

Say you have color-treated hair; you get color-protective Shampoo and conditioner. Makes sense right? Right. Now, its pretty much just lather, rinse, (only repeat for VERY dirty oily hair) condition, and rinse again. But there are some helpful tricks to it. When you Shampoo, don’t be too rough with your hair or you’ll damage the cuticle.

Always be sure the Shampoo is completely rinsed. When conditioning, Focus on the ends of your hair as they are most prone to breakage and therefore tangles. The water should be cold when you do the last rinse out with your conditioner. It helps seal the cuticle (basically, hair strand), making it so your hair appears shinier.

Once your hair is clean and fresh, you’ll probably want to use a shine serum or detangling solution on it. Gently pat your hair dry as much as possible with your towel and squeeze a small amount of product into your hand. I like Biosilk Silk Therapy Treatment. Massage the product into your hair gently, again focusing mostly on the ends. Avoid the roots, as they can look greasy with shine serum on them. Now it’s time for blow-drying.

If you have curly hair, you’ll want to use a Diffuser so you don’t frizz your curls. Otherwise, you shouldn’t need any attachments. Pointing the nozzle down, blow-dry your hair from five inches away. Make sure not to hold it in one spot, or it’ll get fried. Once hair is semi-dry, lift hair in sections with your fingers and blow-dry a section at a time. This will keep your hair from being flat when it’s done being blow-dried.

Flipped-out or curled under? Spiraled, waved? Now you have to decide what you want to day with you hair unless you like it just blow-dried. Check out iVillage’s Virtual Hairstylist below for some great ideas. They even tell you how to do it! Is that not the coolest thing ever?!?
